WAKPALA AND DUPREE STUDENTS DEPART TO GERMANY FOR CULTURAL EXCHANGE
Wakpala, S.D. – Students from Wakpala High School and Dupree High School are departing on an intercultural exchange to Germany, after months of research, fundraising, and personal development. The group of 20 students and chaperones will travel to the town of Bad Lobenstein, where they will attend school, stay with host families, and build on the relationships formed earlier this spring when German students visited Lakȟóta Makȟóčhe.
During their two-week visit, the German students stayed at the YMCA Seven Fires and attended school with their Dupree counterparts, where they took part in Lakota language classes and sports events. In the evenings they attended gatherings like a plant knowledge workshop and an Easter egg hunt for local kids. The unexpected snowdump over Easter weekend was a powerful lesson in respect for Grandmother Earth. Once the roads cleared, they took trips to important cultural sites, including Bear Butte, the Badlands, and the USD Wačhípi.
Now, the Lakota students will be undertaking their first ever overseas travel, and returning the visit to their German friends. Arriving in Munich on April 27th, they will spend a couple of days acclimatizing before heading to Bad Lobenstein for a week, where they will stay with their host families and attend German school. They will also spend three days in Berlin for a field trip that includes a Cold War walking tour, time at a Holocaust memorial, a tour of the U.S. Embassy, and German food experiences.
The students and chaperones are grateful to members of the community who have contributed to fundraising efforts. Support has also been provided by Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, German American Partnership Program, and the Germanic-American Institute. It is hoped that international travel experiences like these will strengthen our youth’s knowledge and leadership qualities in ways that will benefit the Nation.
