By law, The American Legion provides all claims assistance entirely free of charge. Conversely, while accredited claims agents cannot charge for assisting with an initial claim, they are legally permitted to charge fees (often a percentage of back pay) for handling appeals, supplemental claims, and higher-level reviews. Because of its strict mandate to provide free advocacy, the Legion maintains a clear organizational boundary from fee-charging independent agents.
