🎬Looking for something substantive to watch this weekend?

"For Sama" follows Waad al-Kateab through five years of the war in Aleppo. She filmed her own life as the city was bombed around her, then made a documentary addressed to her newborn daughter.

It's not easy viewing. It's also one of the most extraordinary pieces of journalism from the past decade 🎥

One of many resources we've curated as part of our new Middle East & North Africa portrait. Take a look when you're ready.

800 million people. 10+ ethnic groups, from Arabs and Berbers to Kurds and Persians. A region that has shaped global history for more than a century 🌍

What if you could understand all of it (the history, the wars, the political shifts, the daily life) in one place, written by people who actually know what they're talking about?

That's what we just built. The first version of our Middle East & North Africa portrait is live on Atlas of Today's World.

A timeline from the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the 2026 Iran War. Six data points that frame what's at stake. Maps. Charts. A curated set of resources for going deeper.

Have a look, and tell us what stood out to you. 👇

🌍 Eurovision 2026 started this week in Vienna, and there is a quiet story in this year's lineup.

35 countries were competing. That is the smallest field since semi finals were introduced in 2004.

Five countries, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain, decided not to participate this year. It is the largest number of boycotts since 1970. Russia has been suspended since 2022 and Belarus since 2021. Three countries, Bulgaria, Moldova and Romania, are returning after time away.

Eurovision was created in 1956 to help reconnect post war Europe through shared television broadcasts. Seventy years on, the list of who participates is itself a quick read of European politics.

The wider regional context behind this year's withdrawals, particularly the situation in Israel and Palestine, is something we've been working on for months. Atlas's Middle East & North Africa portrait launches soon: a complete picture of the region, written by experts.

Which Eurovision story are you following this year? 🇪🇺

Atlas is now closer than ever before to a functional platform. We can now fine tune what the birds-eye view perspective will look like:

🌍 big-picture portraits of individual world regions
📍 brief profiles of individual countries
🧑‍💼 data layers to illustrate global living standards, level of peace, democracy, human rights index, and more.

The prototype is complete with both desktop and mobile versions. Next we build it, and connect it to our entries database.

With more entries planned for this year, work has begun on a prototype of an interactive socio-political world map, which will be a base of our encyclopedia.

Here is a quick preview of a Figma-based concept, thanks to the help of a product designer Azamat Kanatbekov. 🙌
