PŘÍLEŽITOST PRO POSTDOKTORANDSTVO

The Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) of Brno University of Technology (BUT) is pleased to announce a call for applications for its postdoc programme, open to international early-career researchers in art history and theory, aesthetics, visual studies, media theory, curatorial studies, and artistic research. The aim of the programme is to support recent PhD graduates in their transition to professional academic careers while contributing to the development of research and innovation at the faculty. The programme offers short-term R2 employment positions through annually announced calls.

The current call invites applications for one full-time position, with an anticipated start date of 1 January 2027, ending on 31 December 2027 (or by agreement).

Fashion, nature and ecologies of cinema

A lecture by Markéta Uhlířová

This lecture reflects on the Fashion in Film Festival season Grounded I co-curated in 2025 with Dal Chodha. It has become a common trope of documentary cinema to cast fashion as one of the planet’s greatest villains – one that is nevertheless conveniently photogenic. While such portrayals are justified, they also direct awareness away from cinema and screen cultures’ own material histories and environmental footprints, similarly rooted in industries of resource extraction and energy use. I will briefly highlight their relational ecologies, and outline a wider array of cinematic paradigms for depicting fashion-nature ties while asking how materialities converge in cinematic images. Drawing on recent film and ecological theory, I will posit cinema as a reservoir of worlds in which seemingly impossible relations are rendered possible, at times prompting us to think and feel ourselves beyond anthropocentric narratives.

Marketa Uhlirova is an art historian, curator based at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. As director and co-founder of the Fashion in Film Festival, she has organised film programmes internationally, for venues including Tate Modern, the BFI, Palazzo Grassi and MoMI New York. She has published books and essays on the intersections of fashion, costume design, cinema and artist moving image. In 2017 she co-created the film experience The Inferno Unseen, a reimagined version of Clouzot’s unfinished 1964 film. She is also a long-term collaborator with the Prague-based Ester Krumbachová Archive.

The lecture is financially supported by Faculty of Arts and organized in collaboration with Are | are-events.org. It takes place within the scope of Linda Muchova’s lecture series Dressing up Oneself and the Society : Fashion in the 19th and 20th Century Aesthetics. Everybody is welcome to join us.
