Dragon Boat Racing is an ancient water sport which originated in China over 2000 years ago and is rapidly growing in popularity in the Czech Republic. There are many types and shapes of dragon boats that vary in size. For the purpose of racing (also in our case) there is a standardized dragon boat type certified by International Dragon Boats Association. The canoe shaped boats are 12.5 meters in l

ength. They are crewed by 16 paddlers in pairs facing toward the bow of the boat, 1 drummer or caller at the bow facing toward the paddlers, and there is 1 sweep (a steerer) at the rear of the boat. For competition events, dragon boats are generally rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails. The drummer leading the paddlers throughout a race uses the rhythmic drum beat to indicate the frequency and synchronicity of all the paddlers’ strokes, and is considered to be the “heartbeat” of the dragon boat.
