ECO-Ready is an EU-funded project aiming to improve food security in Europe.

ECO-READY is a project that aims to address the complex issue of food security in Europe by providing real-time data and critical insights into the factors that affect food accessibility and the economic protection of producers. It involves the development of an observatory that provides up-to-date information on climate issues for policy, citizens, and the business community through a transparent

organization -- the policy Hub. ECO-Ready is a 4-year project which receives funding from the European Union’s HORIZON-CL6-2022 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement N◦101084201. Views and opinions expressed are those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or any Research Executive Agency, who cannot be held responsible for them. The project headquarter is in Prague and is coordinated by the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague. The project identifies the weaknesses of current food security monitoring practices and proposes networked databases that translate into "information" or "knowledge" for citizens and policymakers. ECO-READY also seeks to mobilize civil society, including private businesses and consumers, to change production and consumption patterns for climate action and resilience. To achieve this, the project emphasizes the need for reliable and complete information on the sustainability aspects of food and its nutritional value. The project also challenges the current "linear" model of science for policy and proposes a more nuanced understanding of human behaviour based on empirical evidence to improve policy outcomes.

The ECO-READY Observatory continues to evolve with the integration of an AI-powered planning feature, designed to support more informed and proactive decision-making for Europe's food systems.

Built around the needs of the ECO-READY community and co-developed with insights from our 10 Living Labs, the feature helps users navigate complex information and explore contingency planning for a range of regional challenges, from climate extremes and pest outbreaks to disruptions across agricultural supply chains. Rather than replacing expert judgement, the AI feature is designed to support it. By combining scientific knowledge, forecasting methods, and region-specific information, it helps users develop initial planning scenarios that can be refined through local expertise and stakeholder collaboration.

This human-centred approach reflects the core mission of ECO-READY: transforming data into practical knowledge that strengthens resilience, supports evidence-based policymaking, and helps Europe's regions prepare for an uncertain future.

📢 ECO-READY Newsletter 3/2026 is out!

This edition brings together a guide to the growing ECO-READY video library, highlighting key project developments, stakeholder perspectives, webinars, Living Lab activities and practical tools for strengthening food system resilience.

Among the featured topics are the ECO-READY Observatory and stakeholder discussions in London and Rome, as well as sessions on scenario development, contingency planning, forecasting, AI, Life Cycle Assessment, the MAGNET model, and Earth Observation/remote sensing.

What does structured contingency planning look like in practice?

The ECO-READY contingency planning tool provides a structured planning environment that helps users develop and organise contingency plans for food security and biodiversity under climate change.

Through the dashboard, users can create projects, work with guided question sets, and explore key planning components such as hazards, coordination mechanisms, interdependencies, planning boundaries, actor roles, process management, forecasting, and economic considerations.

The aim is to turn a highly complex planning process into something more structured, transparent, and easier to navigate across different regions, target groups, and risk scenarios.

By bringing relevant knowledge and planning steps together in one place, the tool supports more informed and better-prepared responses to future crisis situations.

“Every government around the world is now trying to ensure food security for the future.” But building food security requires us to look beyond food production alone.

In this clip from the ECO-READY Networking and Collaboration Event in London, Professor Michael Bourlakis, Director of Research at Cranfield University and an ECO-READY Work Package Leader, reflects on how climate change can affect biodiversity, farming, food manufacturers, retailers and, ultimately, the citizens and consumers who depend on resilient food systems.

These pressures do not exist in isolation. Alongside rising temperatures and environmental change, food supply chains are also being shaped by geopolitical disruption, from Brexit and the war in Ukraine to instability in the Middle East and risks affecting major trade routes.

ECO-READY is working to understand these interconnected challenges and provide relevant data, research and decision-support tools to policymakers, food supply chain actors, NGOs, government departments and other stakeholders. The goal is to help them make better-informed decisions and strengthen the long-term resilience and security of European food systems.

The ECO-READY team thanks Professor Michael Bourlakis for highlighting why an integrated approach is essential for protecting both the food supply chain and the well-being of citizens.

As climate change continues to put pressure on food systems, contingency planning becomes increasingly important for protecting both food security and biodiversity.

Contingency planning helps decision-makers prepare for uncertain futures by asking key questions:

What could go wrong?

What actions are possible?

What resources are needed?

How should implementation be managed?

Within ECO-READY, the contingency planning tool is being developed to support this process in a more structured and practical way. It brings together key planning dimensions such as hazards, coordination, actor roles, interdependencies, planning boundaries, and economics to help users build more informed and actionable plans.

Because crises do not allow hesitation, planning ahead matters.

On 2–3 July, ECO-READY partners and stakeholders came together in Rome for the ECO-READY Observatory, Living Labs & Policy Uptake event, hosted by our partners Confagricoltura and ENEA - Agenzia nazionale.

In this video, perspectives from the project coordinator and partners come together, highlighting how we are connecting research with practical decision-making. From the experiences and data generated through our Living Labs, to forecasting tools, sustainability assessments and policy information, these different sources feed into the ECO-READY Observatory. As the platform develops, AI-supported functions are also opening new possibilities for users to interact with complex information through natural language, making insights more accessible to policymakers, farmers and other stakeholders.

The interviews also underline an important part of the ECO-READY approach: data alone is not enough. Understanding local needs, combining different types of knowledge and working directly with farmers can help turn information into practical solutions for climate adaptation, biodiversity and food security.

The ECO-READY Observatory's Interactive Map brings these realities to life. Users can explore data across Europe, navigate between regions, and examine how different products perform over time. From regional price trends to the activities of our 10 Living Labs, the map provides a dynamic way to understand how food systems are evolving across diverse landscapes.

By connecting local insights with European-scale data, the Observatory helps researchers, policymakers, farmers, and industry stakeholders better understand regional differences and support more informed, evidence-based decision-making.

The ECO-READY Observatory helps users explore contaminant data across the European food system, making it easier to identify potential food safety risks and understand how they vary between countries, products, and contaminants.

Using the Contaminants page, you can compare residue levels across different food products, investigate specific contaminants, and explore historical data to better understand trends over time. These insights support researchers, policymakers, industry, and food system stakeholders in making informed, evidence-based decisions that contribute to safer and more resilient food systems. Looking into the future is never easy—but choosing the right forecasting method shouldn't be.

The ECO-READY Forecasting Tool has been updated with a new Artificial Intelligence feature, making it even easier for users to explore forecasting approaches and identify methods that best fit their specific challenges.

The tool already provides access to around 40 forecasting methods, extensive documentation, case studies, tutorials, and a wide range of food security and biodiversity data sources. With the new AI functionality, users can now formulate a question or describe a forecasting challenge in their own words and receive guidance based on the knowledge integrated within the platform.

Whether you are assessing climate risks, exploring food security scenarios, investigating biodiversity trends, or supporting policy development, the tool helps navigate the complex world of forecasting and future planning.

Developed within the ECO-READY project, the Forecasting Tool supports evidence-based decision-making by connecting users with forecasting methods, relevant databases, and practical resources tailored to their needs.
