🌱 New UNDP funds for sustainable agriculture in North Macedonia! 🇲🇰

The UNDP has officially opened applications for the eighth phase of the GEF Small Grants Programme, an extraordinary opportunity to modernize the local agrifood sector. The program offers non-repayable grants of up to $30,000 per individual project (requiring a 50% co-financing, which can also be covered in-kind) and features a mandatory ex*****on timeframe of 12 to 18 months. The main goal is to boost biodiversity conservation, clean energy solutions, and resilient agriculture, focusing on cutting-edge agroecological techniques to reduce pesticides and protect soil, especially in the Pelagonia and Resen regions. The call is exclusively reserved for civil society organizations, local NGOs, and cooperatives legally registered in North Macedonia. Eligible entities have until the end of June 2026 to submit their digital documentation through the official UNDP North Macedonia web portal!

💨 North Macedonia is gearing up for a massive green revolution! With a powerhouse investment of approximately €500 million by Alcazar Energy, the upcoming Štip wind farm is set to become the ultimate cornerstone of the country’s energy strategy and its largest renewable facility to date. 🇲🇰

The ambitious project will see 54 wind turbines rise across the municipalities of Štip, Radoviš, and Karbinci. Once operational, this clean energy giant is expected to prevent up to 690,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, making a massive dent in the region's carbon footprint. 🌱

Backed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), this initiative is part of a grander vision to build a 1 GW renewable energy platform across the Western Balkans. With public consultations already underway, construction is officially scheduled to kick off this year, in 2026, cementing North Macedonia’s position as a major regional hub for green investment and sustainable industrial growth. 🌍🚀

While much of Europe focuses on artificial intelligence and the energy transition, North Macedonia is quietly attracting significant investments through its Technological Industrial Development Zones (TIDZ).

One of the most notable projects involves German pharmaceutical technology company Gerresheimer, which is nearing completion of its second manufacturing facility in the country. The investment could reach €140 million, highlighting growing international confidence in North Macedonia as a destination for advanced industrial production (Source: TIDZ, 2026).

The battery sector is also gaining momentum. New investments linked to energy storage systems and electric mobility are helping position the country within one of Europe's fastest-growing industries. Demand for battery technologies continues to rise as electric vehicle adoption accelerates across the continent (Source: Avesta Holding).

For a country of just over 2 million inhabitants, these figures are significant. By attracting companies operating in high-value sectors such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and energy technologies, North Macedonia is aiming to establish itself as a technology and manufacturing hub in the Balkans. If current investment trends continue, the country could play an increasingly important role in European supply chains over the coming years.

North Macedonia’s agricultural sector is relatively small but strongly export-oriented, mainly toward the EU and CEFTA markets. It accounts for around 7–10% of GDP and roughly 11% of total exports, with a focus on specialization rather than scale.

Key exports include fruits and vegetables such as apples, grapes, tomatoes, and peppers, mainly produced in regions like Strumica and Tikveš. A large share is exported fresh to European markets, but the sector remains fragmented, leaving room for better organization and logistics.

Meat exports are dominated by lamb, a niche product mainly sold to Mediterranean and EU markets, though with limited domestic value added due to weak processing capacity.

Wine is the strongest agro-export segment, with over 80% of production exported. Major producers include Tikveš, Stobi, and Popova Kula, all active in international markets and promoting local grape varieties.

In processed food, companies like Vitaminka and Makprogres are gradually increasing exports of higher value-added products.

Overall, the main opportunity lies not only in agricultural production, but in developing processing, logistics, cold storage, and branding capabilities.

North Macedonia has launched a major energy investment program centered on the construction of 67 new power plants selected from 284 investor proposals. The projects include 59 photovoltaic plants, seven wind farms, and one gas-fired cogeneration facility, adding more than 4.4 GW of new capacity through investments worth around EUR 3.7 billion.

Solar projects account for over 3 GW of capacity, while wind farms contribute nearly 908 MW. The largest project is a 495 MW cogeneration plant. Together, these investments are expected to boost domestic electricity production, strengthen energy security, and reduce reliance on imports.

The power plant initiative is part of a broader EUR 5.7 billion energy modernization program. In addition, the government approved 96 energy storage projects—77 co-located and 19 standalone systems—with total investments estimated at EUR 2 billion.

🇨🇿 Druhý den MEF 2026: Diskuze o investicích, energetické transformaci a nových příležitostech v Severní Makedonii
Společnost představila své zkušenosti s realizací energetických projektů a svůj dlouhodobý závazek podporovat zelenou transformaci a energetickou bezpečnost zemí západního Balkánu.
CMAC bude i nadále podporovat rozvoj obchodních vztahů, investic a technologické spolupráce mezi Českou republikou a Severní Makedonií v oblasti energetiky, inovací a udržitelného rozvoje.
