🔎Four and a half years on, Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine continues to cause massive displacement, leaving ten million Ukrainians separated from their homes.

Around four million people remain internally displaced within Ukraine, with over a million seeking safety in eastern regions like Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv.
📈Meanwhile, nearly six million refugees have fled abroad. 🇪🇺 Europe hosts 5.2 million Ukrainian refugees, including 4.4 million in the EU. Germany leads with approximately 1.3 million refugees, followed by Poland with nearly one million, and the Czech Republic with 395,000—representing the highest proportion per capita (3.6% of its population). Significant numbers have also settled in Western Europe, including the UK, Spain, and the Netherlands, as well as over 500,000 in Canada and the US.

💡These numbers are astounding, but they should not hide the fact that behind every statistic is a human story.

Every morning, as the sun rises over , children in remote communities set out in pursuit of something that should be available to all: an education.
For many families in remote villages, education remains a challenge. Long distances, poverty, years of conflict, and a lack of schools keep children—especially girls—out of the classroom.
Yet there is hope, even in the most challenging circumstances.
With EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid funding and in partnership with SADA, we established 150 Community-Based Education classes, to bring learning opportunities to 5,250 children.

Conflict hits children particularly hard. It deprives them of their security, prevents them from attending school, restricts their access to water and healthcare, and exposes them to long-term stress.

More than half-a-billion children live in places affected by conflict.
In Ukraine, we repair schools and shelters so that children can continue their education even during attacks. In Syria, we help children return to school. We provide psychosocial support to children affected by war and help them protect their health.

Halyna is 71 and lives alone, in Ukraine.

A nearby explosion shattered the windows and damaged the roof of her house. The tradespeople estimated that the roof repairs alone would cost 26,000 hryvnias—several times her monthly pension.

Her neighbours came to her aid: one recommended some roofers who charged a better price. In addition, our team at People in Need Ukraine assisted with the installation of windows for Halyna, with the support of the U.S. Department of State .

Here roof was repaired quickly, and Halyna returned to bringing in the autumn harvest and recovering her health.

💬“We wake up, smile, drink coffee and thank the Armed Forces of Ukraine and God that we have this morning,” Olha says, in her indomitable style.

A bomb damaged Olha's house in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast where she resettled after losing her home in the occupied Luhansk Oblast.

Whilst she awaits an assessment of the extent of the damage, she visits the town’s children—reading them stories and teaching them new things.

Yesterday, Šimon Pánek, our director, joined in discussions at the Ambrela Development Forum in where he exchanged perspectives on the EU’s Global Gateway and what this new vision for partnership, trade and development means in practice.

Simon noted that while the economic dimension of the Global Gateway is clear, an equally important question is how its 360° approach will work in reality.

What role will civil society play?

And how can we ensure that investment and partnerships translate into meaningful impact for people, communities and countries?

These discussions matter. Civil society brings experience, local knowledge and long-term engagement with communities—and it needs to be part of the conversation about how the Global Gateway is shaped and delivered.

📈42% of Zambia’s agricultural GDP comes from livestock. This supports the livelihoods of more than half of the country’s rural population. In Mongu and Limulunga, cattle are an important source of income and resilience for many families.

🐄Yet overgrazing, degraded pasture and tick-borne diseases continue to affect herd health and productivity. These increase pressure on land and natural resources, as households look for alternative ways to support their livelihoods.

🚜Our team at People in Need Zambia alongside WWF Zambia and with support from Jersey Overseas Aid are supporting rangeland management as part of a broad approach under our Enhancing Livelihood Opportunities through Ecosystem Protection project. Together with community forestry and clean energy activities, we support livelihoods while protecting the Barotse Floodplain ecosystem.

🤝Five communal grazing areas are now managed by local rangeland committees working with the Barotse Royal Establishment and Government livestock officers. Since completing a Training of Trainers programme in October 2025, committee members, farmers and extension officers have shared knowledge with 250 farmers and supported the treatment of 20,000 cattle against tick-borne diseases.

It is rare, that a person actually wants to be dependent on others. Yet today, 239 million people around the world need humanitarian aid.

Why?

Because war or natural disaster can deprive a person of everything—often in a matter of minutes. Climate change, moreover, is depriving people of their livelihoods.

We provide aid in areas affected by some of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time—the wars in Sudan, Ukraine, Gaza, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We often work in hard-to-reach areas. We strive to support to those hardest hit or most vulnerable to crises, such as children, older people, and those living with disability.

➡️We provide food, drinking water, and hygiene support.
➡️We provide direct financial assistance and help prevent malnutrition.
➡️We also help farmers cope with the impacts of climate change so that they can continue to maintain good harvests and feed themselves and their families.
