🌍 Παγκόσμια Ημέρα για την Καταπολέμηση της Ερημοποίησης και της Ξηρασίας | 17 Ιουνίου

Η ξηρασία, η υποβάθμιση της γης και η αύξηση της θερμοκρασίας αποτελούν μερικές από τις σημαντικότερες προκλήσεις που επιφέρει η κλιματική αλλαγή.

Η Κύπρος και η ευρύτερη περιοχή της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου και Μέσης Ανατολής είναι ιδιαίτερα ευάλωτες, καθώς έχουν αναγνωριστεί ως παγκόσμιο επίκεντρο κλιματικής αλλαγής.

Μελέτες ερευνητών του CARE-C του The Cyprus Institute δείχνουν ότι τις προσεχείς δεκαετίες αναμένεται μείωση των ημερών βροχής και της συνολικής βροχόπτωσης στην περιοχή, και επέκταση της ξηρής περιόδου του έτους κατά 1–2 μήνες.

Οι μεταβολές αυτές εντείνουν τον κίνδυνο ερημοποίησης, με επιπτώσεις στη βλάστηση, τις καλλιέργειες και την υποβάθμιση των εδαφών, ενώ τα δάση και άλλα οικοσυστήματα καθίστανται πιο ευάλωτα σε πυρκαγιές.

Η αντιμετώπιση απαιτεί συνδυασμένη δράση: μείωση των εκπομπών και βιώσιμη διαχείριση της γης και των υδάτινων πόρων.

Η έγκαιρη δράση σήμερα μπορεί να περιορίσει τις επιπτώσεις αύριο και να ενισχύσει την ανθεκτικότητα της περιοχής.

CARE-C, The Cyprus Institute, Associate Research Scientist Dr. Klito Petallidou has successfully completed an ERC Visiting Research Fellowship, as part of the CATALYST-VISIT project objectives.

As part of the fellowship, Dr. Petallidou spent three months at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands, hosted by Assistant Professor Sven Askes. During her stay, she expanded her expertise in the rapidly growing field of photothermal catalysis, while engaging in collaborative research activities and knowledge exchange with leading researchers in the field.

CATALYST-VISIT is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Ίδρυμα Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας/ Research and Innovation Foundation.

Η Συνεργάτης Ερευνητική Επιστήμονας του CARE-C του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου Δρ. Κλιτό Πεταλλίδου, ολοκλήρωσε με επιτυχία το ετήσιο ERC Visiting Research Fellowship, ως μέρος των στόχων του έργου CATALYST-VISIT.

Ως μέρος της συνεργασίας η Δρ. Πεταλλίδου φιλοξενήθηκε από τον Αναπληρωτή Καθηγητή Sven Askes στο Τμήμα Φυσικής και Αστρονομίας του Πανεπιστημίου Vrije του Άμστερνταμ στην Ολλανδία, για τρεις μήνες. Κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής της, ενίσχυσε τις γνώσεις και την εξειδίκευσή της στον συνεχώς αναπτυσσόμενο τομέα της φωτοθερμικής κατάλυσης, συμμετέχοντας παράλληλα σε ερευνητικές συνεργασίες και δράσεις ανταλλαγής γνώσεων με διακεκριμένους ερευνητές του κλάδου.

Το έργο CATALYST-VISIT συγχρηματοδοτείται από το Ευρωπαϊκό Ταμείο Περιφερειακής Ανάπτυξης και τη Δημοκρατία της Κύπρου μέσω του Ιδρύματος Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας.

Air quality in the Eastern Mediterranean is highly affected by transboundary pollution. However, the regional and sectoral contributions have not yet been sufficiently quantified. New study from CARE-C, The Cyprus Institute, finds significant differences in how black carbon (BC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions are attributed across inventories, underlining the importance of enhancing emissions data to support more accurate air quality modelling and source attribution studies in the region.

According to the lead author, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Dr. Marios Panagi: “By improving understanding of how these pollutants are transported across the Eastern Mediterranean, this work contributes to ongoing efforts to better assess regional air pollution and support evidence-based mitigation strategies in climate-sensitive regions such as the EMME.”

Η ποιότητα του αέρα στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο επηρεάζεται σημαντικά από τη διασυνοριακή ρύπανση. Ωστόσο, η συμβολή των διαφορετικών περιοχών και πηγών εκπομπών δεν έχει ακόμη ποσοτικοποιηθεί επαρκώς. Σύμφωνα με νέα μελέτη του CARE-C, του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, καταγράφονται σημαντικές διαφορές στον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι εκπομπές μαύρου άνθρακα (BC) και μονοξειδίου του άνθρακα (CO) κατανέμονται στις διάφορες απογραφές εκπομπών. Τα ευρήματα αναδεικνύουν την ανάγκη βελτίωσης των δεδομένων εκπομπών, ώστε να ενισχυθεί η ακρίβεια των μελετών ποιότητας αέρα και η κατανόηση των πηγών ρύπανσης στην περιοχή.

Σύμφωνα με τον κύριο συγγραφέα της μελέτης, Μεταδιδακτορικό Ερευνητή Δρ. Μάριο Παναγή: «Βελτιώνοντας την κατανόηση του τρόπου με τον οποίο οι συγκεκριμένοι ρύποι μεταφέρονται στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο, η έρευνα αυτή στηρίζει τις προσπάθειες για καλύτερη αξιολόγηση της περιφερειακής ατμοσφαιρικής ρύπανσης και στην ανάπτυξη αποτελεσματικών στρατηγικών αντιμετώπισης σε περιοχές ευάλωτες στην κλιματική αλλαγή, όπως η περιοχή EMME.»

The AVENGERS project successfully organized its latest online workshop on “Innovative Approaches in Emissions Monitoring, Inventories, and Inversion Modelling for Climate Applications” between 27 and 29 May 2026.

The event was hosted by CARE-C The Cyprus Institute, and brought together 129 participants from academia, research organisations, governmental bodies, and the private sector. It provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration across the emissions monitoring community.

Discussions highlighted the importance of integrating observations, modelling approaches, and emissions inventories to improve the accuracy of emissions estimates and strengthen climate-related research, monitoring, and decision-making.

Διοργανώθηκε με επιτυχία το διαδικτυακό εργαστήριο με τίτλο «Innovative Approaches in Emissions Monitoring, Inventories, and Inversion Modelling for Climate Applications», στο πλαίσιο του ερευνητικού έργου AVENGERS, από τις 27 έως τις 29 Μαΐου 2026.

Στο εργαστήριο συμμετείχαν 129 εκπρόσωποι από πανεπιστήμια, ερευνητικούς οργανισμούς, δημόσιους φορείς και τον ιδιωτικό τομέα, δημιουργώντας ένα δυναμικό περιβάλλον ανταλλαγής γνώσεων και ενίσχυσης της συνεργασίας.

Οι συζητήσεις ανέδειξαν τη σημασία του συνδυασμού παρατηρήσεων, μοντέλων και απογραφών εκπομπών για τη βελτίωση της ακρίβειας των σχετικών εκτιμήσεων, συμβάλλοντας στην ενίσχυση της κλιματικής έρευνας, της περιβαλλοντικής παρακολούθησης και της λήψης τεκμηριωμένων αποφάσεων.

CARE-C is pleased to announce that Research Scientist Dr Vijay Kanawade has been awarded a prestigious Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellowship to strengthen an ongoing research collaboration between The Cyprus Institute and the University of Surrey, UK.

As part of the fellowship, Dr. Kanawade will undertake research visits to the University of Surrey, hosted by Professor Prashant Kumar, Founding Director, Global Centre for Clean Air Research (Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE)) and Chair in Air Quality & Health, School of Sustainability, Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of Surrey, UK.

This collaboration will contribute to the ERC-funded BAE project and the Horizon Europe Net4Cities project, supporting the development of new tools and datasets for studying aerosol formation processes, urban air pollution, and population exposure to airborne particles.

CARE-C extends its warmest congratulations to Dr Kanawade on this distinguished recognition and wishes him every success in this important research collaboration.

Exploring atmospheric observations, data mining, and climate modelling in Crete.

Applications are now open for the 2026 Edu4Climate Autumn School on Advanced Atmospheric Observations, Data Mining and Modelling, taking place in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, from 14–18 September 2026.

Organised by the University of Crete and the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, with the support of the Edu4Climate consortium, the Autumn School will offer M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in atmospheric and Earth system sciences the opportunity to gain theoretical and hands-on experience in atmospheric observations, data analysis, and numerical modelling. The programme also includes a visit to the Finokalia monitoring station and collaborative group activities supported by experienced researchers and academics.

Participation is free of charge.

Οι αιτήσεις για το Φθινοπωρινό Σχολείο Edu4Climate 2026 με θέμα «Ατμοσφαιρικές Παρατηρήσεις, Εξόρυξη Δεδομένων και Κλιματική Μοντελοποίηση» έχουν ανοίξει. Το σχολείο θα πραγματοποιηθεί στον Άγιο Νικόλαο Κρήτης, από τις 14 έως τις 18 Σεπτεμβρίου 2026.

Το Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης και ο Δήμος Αγίου Νικολάου, με τη στήριξη των εταίρων του έργου Edu4Climate, διοργανώνουν ένα εντατικό εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα για μεταπτυχιακούς και διδακτορικούς φοιτητές στις ατμοσφαιρικές και γεωλογικές επιστήμες. Οι συμμετέχοντες θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να αποκτήσουν θεωρητική και πρακτική εμπειρία στις ατμοσφαιρικές παρατηρήσεις, την ανάλυση δεδομένων και την αριθμητική μοντελοποίηση.

Το πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνει επίσης επίσκεψη στον σταθμό ατμοσφαιρικών μετρήσεων «Φινοκαλιά», καθώς και ομαδικές δραστηριότητες με την καθοδήγηση έμπειρων ερευνητών και ακαδημαϊκών.

Η συμμετοχή είναι δωρεάν.

VEClim, led by the CARE-C of The Cyprus Institute, has been highlighted as a Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Use Case at the Copernicus Health Hub, showcasing the use of Copernicus climate data to assess vector-borne disease risk under a changing climate.

VEClim integrates Copernicus ECMWF datasets with mechanistic models of vector activity and disease transmission to simulate mosquito suitability and outbreak risk under different climate scenarios, supporting public health planning and climate adaptation.

The recognition as a C3S Use Case highlights the value of VEClim and Copernicus data in developing tools for climate-sensitive health risks and improving understanding of how climate change may influence the spread of vector-borne diseases.

Το ερευνητικό έργο VEClim, το οποίο συντονίζεται από το CARE-C του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, έχει αναδειχθεί ως Use Case του Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). Η αναγνώριση αυτή αναδεικνύει την αξιοποίηση δεδομένων του Copernicus για την εκτίμηση του κινδύνου της εμφάνισης εντομογενών νοσημάτων, υπό συνθήκες κλιματικής αλλαγής.

Το VEClim συνδυάζει δεδομένα του Copernicus με μηχανιστικά μοντέλα προκειμένου να προσομοιώσει την πιθανότητα επιδημικών εξάρσεων σε διαφορετικά κλιματικά σενάρια, υποστηρίζοντας τον σχεδιασμό στρατηγικών δράσεων για τη προστασία της δημόσιας υγείας και την προσαρμογή στην κλιματική αλλαγή.

Η αναγνώριση του VEClim ως Use Case του C3S αναδεικνύει τη σημασία της επιστήμης στην καλύτερη των επιπτώσεων της κλιματικής αλλαγής και την διαμόρφωση μέτρων αντιμετώπισης υγειονομικών κινδύνων.

Enhancing students’ knowledge on climate change through an interactive quiz

As part of the outreach activities of the OptimESM HE project, Research Scientist George Zittis, along with Research Graduate Fellows Andreas Karpasitis, Maria Gavrouzou, Pinelopi Loizou, PhD, and Aristotelis Liakakos, participated in The Cyprus Institute’s “sCYence Fair”.

The activity used an interactive quiz to share key aspects of OptimESM research, focusing on climate change and the improvement of climate prediction models.

Through this engagement, students were introduced to the work carried out within the OptimESM project and the role of climate modelling in understanding future climate conditions.

Ενισχύοντας τις γνώσεις των μαθητών για την κλιματική αλλαγή μέσα από ένα διαδραστικό κουίζ

Στο πλαίσιο των δράσεων ενημέρωσης για το έργο OptimESM, ο Επιστημονικός Ερευνητής Γιώργος Ζίττης, μαζί με τους Διδακτορικούς Ερευνητές Ανδρέα Καρπασίτη, Μαρία Γαβρούζου, Πηνελόπη Λοΐζου και Αριστοτέλη Λιακάκο, συμμετείχαν στο “sCYence Fair” του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου.

Η δραστηριότητα αξιοποίησε ένα διαδραστικό κουίζ για την παρουσίαση βασικών στοιχείων της έρευνας του OptimESM, με έμφαση στην κλιματική αλλαγή και τη βελτίωση των κλιματικών μοντέλων πρόβλεψης.

Μέσα από αυτή τη δράση, οι μαθητές ήρθαν σε επαφή με την έρευνα που διεξάγεται στο πλαίσιο του έργου OptimESM και τον ρόλο της κλιματικής μοντελοποίησης στην κατανόηση των μελλοντικών κλιματικών συνθηκών.
