New publication from CARE-C, The Cyprus Institute, examines the growing health challenges posed by climate change in urban environments across the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME), identifying key research gaps and priorities for strengthening climate and health action in the region.

The publication brings together the outcomes of the scientific workshop “Climate and Health in the Urban Environment,” which was held in Nicosia and Larnaca on 24–25 September 2024 as part of the conference “The Climate Crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East”.

Μια νέα επιστημονική δημοσίευση από το CARE-C του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου δείχνει πώς η κλιματική αλλαγή αυξάνει τα προβλήματα υγείας στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και τη Μέση Ανατολή.

Η έρευνα εντοπίζει τα κενά στη βιβλιογραφία και προτείνει βασικά μέτρα για να περιοριστούν οι επιπτώσεις της κλιματικής κρίσης στο περιβάλλον και την υγεία.

Η μελέτη βασίζεται στις συζητήσεις που έγιναν στο ερευνητικό εργαστήρι «Κλίμα και Υγεία στο Αστικό Περιβάλλον». Το εργαστήρι πραγματοποιήθηκε στη Λευκωσία και τη Λάρνακα στις 24-25 Σεπτεμβρίου 2024, ως μέρος του συνεδρίου «Κλιματική Κρίση στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και Μέση Ανατολή».

Researchers from the CARE-C, The Cyprus Institute, participated in the European Meteorological Society Annual Meeting 2026, held in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The CARE-C was represented by Dr. Pinelopi Loizou, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CARE-C, and Fragkeskos Kekkou, Graduate Research Fellow at CARE-C.

The meeting brought together experts from different fields, including climate science, public health, medicine and communication, to exchange knowledge and perspectives on the links between weather, climate and human health.

Ερευνητές του CARE-C του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, συμμετείχαν στο EMS ετήσιο συνέδριο, που πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Ουτρέχτη της Ολλανδίας.

Το CARE-C εκπροσώπησαν η Δρ. Πηνελόπη Λοΐζου, μεταδιδακτορική ερευνήτρια στο CARE-C και ο Φραγκέσκος Κέκκου, διδακτορικός ερευνητής στο CARE-C .

Η συνάντηση συγκέντρωσε ειδικούς από διαφορετικούς κλάδους, συμπεριλαμβανομένων της κλιματικής επιστήμης, της δημόσιας υγείας, της ιατρικής και της επικοινωνίας, με σκοπό την ανταλλαγή γνώσεων και απόψεων σχετικά με τους συνδέσμους μεταξύ καιρού, κλίματος και ανθρώπινης υγείας.

Strong participation from CARE-C, The Cyprus Institute, researchers at the iCACGP-IGAC 2026 International Conference, held in Heraklion, Crete.

Associate Professor Tuija Jokinen, Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Rimal Abeed and Graduate Research Fellow Shahid Naqui delivered 3 poster presentations.

Assistant Professor Efstratios Bourtsoukidis, participated as a presenter and as part of the Local Organising Committee with a presentation on “Extreme Ozone Formation in the Middle East is Driven by Unaccounted Hydrocarbon Sources.”

The conference provided an opportunity for the atmospheric chemistry research community to get together and discuss recent developments in understanding changes in the atmosphere and their impacts.

Ερευνητές του CARE-C, του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, συμμετείχαν ενεργά στο Διεθνές Συνέδριο iCACGP-IGAC 2026 που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Ηράκλειο της Κρήτης.

Η Συνεργάτιδα Καθηγήτρια Tuija Jokinen, η Mεταδιδακτορική Eρευνήτρια Δρ. Rima Abeed και ο Διδακτορικός Ερευνητής Shahid Naqui παρουσίασαν τρεις αφίσες.

Ο Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής Ευστράτιος Μπουρτσουκίδης, συμμετείχε στην Τοπική Οργανωτική Επιτροπή, ενώ παράλληλα παρέδωσε παρουσίαση με τίτλο «Ο ακραίος σχηματισμός όζοντος στη Μέση Ανατολή οδηγείται από μη συνυπολογισμένες πηγές υδρογονανθράκων».

Το συνέδριο έδωσε την ευκαιρία στην ερευνητική κοινότητα της ατμοσφαιρικής χημείας να συναντηθεί και να συζητήσει τις τελευταίες εξελίξεις γύρω από τις αλλαγές στην ατμόσφαιρα και τις επιπτώσεις τους.

CARE-C, The Cyprus Institute, researchers actively participated in the PREVENT Early Career Forum on Mediterranean Seasonal Forecasting Research, held in Poseidi, Chalkidiki, Greece.

Dr George Zittis, Research Scientist and Dr. Pantelis Georgiades, Associate Research Scientist at CARE-C, delivered a two-part hands-on session entitled “Introduction to Deep Learning with PyTorch and its Applications to Climate Sciences”.

In addition, Fragkeskos Kekkou, Research Graduate Fellow, delivered a lecture entitled “Health Impacts of Environmental Exposures: A Statistical Modelling Approach.”

The Forum brought together early-career researchers and experts from across the region working in different areas of climate research, with a particular focus on seasonal forecasting, climate extremes, and their impacts across the Mediterranean.

Ερευνητές του κέντρου CARE-C του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου είχαν ενεργό συμμετοχή στο PREVENT Early Career Forum, το οποίο επικεντρώθηκε στην έρευνα για τις εποχικές μετεωρολογικές προβλέψεις στη Μεσόγειο και πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Ποσείδι Χαλκιδικής.

Ο Δρ Γιώργος Ζίττης, Ερευνητικός Επιστήμονας, και ο Δρ Παντελής Γεωργιάδης, Αναπληρωτής Ερευνητικός Επιστήμονας, του CARE-C παρουσίασαν ένα πρακτικό εργαστήριο δύο μερών με τίτλο «Introduction to Deep Learning with PyTorch and its Applications to Climate Sciences».

The 2026 Autumn School on “Advanced Atmospheric Observations, Data Mining and Modelling”, was held from 14–18 September 2026 at the Hellenic Mediterranean University campus in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece.

The school brought together 12 participants for a week of theoretical and hands-on training in atmospheric observations, data analysis and numerical modelling.

The Autumn School was organised within the framework of the Horizon Europe Edu4Climate project, with course organisation led by the University of Crete and the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, supported by the Edu4Climate Consortium partners

Ολοκληρώθηκε το φθινοπωρινό σχολείο 2026 «Προηγμένες Ατμοσφαιρικές Παρατηρήσεις, Εξόρυξη Δεδομένων και Μοντελοποίηση». Το σχολείο πραγματοποιήθηκε από τις 14 μέχρι τις 18 Σεπτεμβρίου 2016 στις εγκαταστάσεις του Ελληνικού Μεσογειακού Πανεπιστημίου στον Άγιο Νικόλαο Κρήτης.

Το σχολείο συγκέντρωσε 12 συμμετέχοντες για μια βδομάδα θεωρητικών και πρακτικών διαλέξεων σχετικές με ατμοσφαιρικές παρατηρήσεις, ανάλυση δεδομένων και αριθμητική μοντελοποίηση.

Το φθινοπωρινό σχολείο διοργανώθηκε στα πλαίσια του Ευρωπαϊκού Έργου Ορίζοντας, Edu4Climate, από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης και τον Δήμο Αγίου Νικολάου, υπό την υποστήριξη των εταίρων του Edu4Climate.

The partners of the Edu4Climate project gathered in Cyprus on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, for the project’s final meeting.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the project's progress, discuss the remaining activities, and agree on final steps towards its completion.

The 8th MedCLIVAR conference has officially concluded!

Organised by CARE-C, The Cyprus Institute, under the auspices of the Municipality of Limassol and the Department of Meteorology, the conference brought together more than 150 researchers from 25 countries, for more than 100 presentations and 35 posters. Five days of science and discussions on Mediterranean climate science here in Cyprus.

Ολοκληρώθηκε με επιτυχία το 8ο συνέδριο MedCLIVAR!

Σε συνδιοργάνωση με το CARE-C του Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου, το συνέδριο συγκέντρωσε 150 και πλεον επιστήμονες απο 25 χώρες, για περισσότερες απο 100 παρουσιάσεις και 35 αφίσες. Για πέντε μέρες γεμάτες έρευνα και συζητήσεις σχετικά με την επιστήμη του Μεσογειακού κλίματος.

As the Mediterranean Basin faces growing environmental, geopolitical and migration pressures, a new comprehensive expert analysis has been released on the Environmental Change-Migration-Conflict Nexus in the region by the independent international scientific network of Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change (MedECC), with substantive contributions from researchers of The Cyprus Institute.

The study provides an extensive assessment of the scientific, technical, and socio-economic literature on interdependence and numerous mutual linkages and feedback mechanisms between environmental change (including climate change), conflict, and human migration.

Prof. Manfred A. Lange of The Cyprus Institute’s Energy, Environment and Water Research Center- EEWRC contributed as a coordinator, editor, and coordinating lead author of the study; while STARC - Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center, Associate Prof. Efthymia Nikita and Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) Research Scientist Dr. George Zittis, contributed to the research and participated as lead authors, respectively.

Καθώς η Μεσόγειος αντιμετωπίζει έντονες περιβαλλοντικές, γεωπολιτικές και μεταναστευτικές πιέσεις, μια νέα επιστημονική έκθεση έχει δημοσιευτεί από το MedECC, το ανεξάρτητο διεθνές δίκτυο επιστημόνων για την κλιματική και περιβαλλοντική αλλαγή στη Μεσόγειο, με σημαντική συμβολή ερευνητών του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου.

Η μελέτη παρουσιάζει μια εκτενή ανάλυση της υπάρχουσας επιστημονικής, τεχνικής και κοινωνικοοικονομικής βιβλιογραφίας σχετικά με τις αλληλεπιδράσεις μεταξύ περιβαλλοντικών αλλαγών, συγκρούσεων και ανθρώπινης μετανάστευσης στη Μεσόγειο.

Στην ανάλυση συνέβαλαν από το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου ο Καθ. Manfred Lange από το Ερευνητικό Κέντρο Ενέργειας, Περιβάλλοντος και Υδάτινων Πόρων, η Αναπληρώτρια Καθηγήτρια Ευθυμία Νικήτα από το Ερευνητικό Κέντρο Επιστήμης και Τεχνολογίας στην Αρχαιολογία και τον Πολιτισμό και ο Ερευνητικός Επιστήμονας Δρ. Γιώργος Ζίττης από το Κέντρο Αριστείας για την Κλιματική και Ατμοσφαιρική Έρευνα.
