# PEO at Manifiesta in Belgium

On 12 and 13 September 2026, the major political and social festival Manifiesta took place in Ostend, Belgium, under the slogan “Make Music, Not War.”

Manifiesta is organised every year by the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PTB) and brings together political, social and trade union organisations from across Belgium, as well as organisations and participants from around the world. The festival provides an important space for solidarity, discussion and exchange on the major issues affecting workers and society.

This year’s programme included discussions and interventions by prominent international politicians, activists, writers, artists and other public figures, including Jeremy Corbyn, Peter Mertens, Hind Eljadid, Hasan Piker and Jason Hickel among others.

A major highlight of the festival was the concert by internationally renowned musician Manu Chao. His music and lyrics have a strong social and political character, addressing issues such as migration, poverty, war and oppression, while highlighting the importance of freedom, solidarity and social justice.

PEO participated in Manifiesta with a four-member delegation. The delegation had the opportunity to take part in the festival with its own stand, present the work and positions of PEO, meet and exchange views with various trade union, social and political organisations, and attend the festival’s wide range of activities and discussions.

PEO’s participation in Manifiesta was an important opportunity to strengthen international relations and solidarity with workers’ and social organisations, exchange experiences and contribute to the common struggle for peace, social justice and the rights of working people.

JOINT DECLARATION 1 SEPTEMBER 2026
The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) is marking for yet another year the established International Trade Union Day of Action for Peace on 1 September, on the occasion of the sombre anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War and N**i Germany’s invasion of Poland.
This day pays tribute to the memory of the millions of victims of N**i and fascist atrocities, as well as the countless victims of imperialist wars.
PEO and KTAMS, DEV-IS, KTOS, KTOEOS, KOOPSEN, DAU-SEN and BES – trade union organisations all affiliated to the WFTU in Cyprus – join our voices with those of workers and the class-based trade union movement across the world and express our resolute opposition to the ongoing imperialist wars, arms build-up and the undermining of international law.
The enormous expenditure on the war economy leads to austerity policies and cuts in social spending on health, education, pensions and wages, whilst increasing the dangers to world peace.
The spread of the capitalist crisis, the attacks being waged on trade union rights and the rise of far-right forces are creating a climate of uncertainty for working people.
We denounce the genocide being committed of the Palestinian people and demand an end to the Israeli occupation and colonisation, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
We condemn the war-mongering and imperialist aggression of the US, Israel and their allies in the Middle East, as well as the interventions in Venezuela and Cuba. We demand an end to the war in Ukraine and to all armed conflicts, with the respect of the right of the peoples to self-determination and peace.
We, the Cypriot working people, join our voices with working people across the world in the struggle to defend peace, to dismantle NATO and all military alliances, and to build a world free from imperialist wars and interventions.
The turbulent situation in the Middle East creates serious dangers for Cyprus, further highlighting the urgent need to solve the Cyprus problem. It is a dangerous illusion to believe that the current unacceptable partitionist status quo can offer stability and security for the future. Security, stability and prosperity for the Cypriot people as a whole can be achieved by building mutual trust and creating a common vision for all Cypriots.
The only realistic prospect for solving the Cyprus problem remains the resumption of talks from the point at which they were suspended at Crans-Montana, with the aim of achieving a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation with political equality, as stipulated by the United Nations resolutions.
The recent visit by the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus and his reference to his commitment to a solution to the Cyprus problem within the United Nations parameters confirm the framework within which the sides must act in order to break the deadlock and resume the negotiations.
We call on the two leaders to make the most of this new opportunity and avoid making statements and engaging in actions that might hinder the effort, to proceed without delay to substantive negotiations for a comprehensive and sustainable solution.
On the occasion of 1st September, we express our opposition to wars and armaments and renew our commitment to the common struggle for peace, reunification and the demilitarisation of Cyprus.
We are fighting for an independent and united Cyprus, a bridge of peace and security for all the peoples of the region.

PEO Statement of Solidarity with the Workers and People of Nepal following the devastating floods in Nepal

PEO expresses its deep sorrow over the unimaginable humanitarian and economic devastation caused by the flash floods that occurred following the collapse of a glacier in the Nepal-China border region. We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and stand in solidarity with all those affected by this tragedy.

According to available information, the floods have resulted in hundreds of deaths, while many people remain missing. The ongoing risk of landslides is hampering rescue operations and placing the lives of people in the affected areas at even greater risk.

The immediate implementation of all necessary measures is required to protect those who remain at risk, as well as to ensure that those affected have immediate and meaningful access to food, shelter, medical care and all other necessary assistance.

The internationalist solidarity of workers is a source of strength in the face of disasters and difficult times.

We stand firmly alongside the people, workers and trade unions of Nepal, expressing our solidarity in the face of these tragic developments.

The General Secretary of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) of South Africa and General Secretary of the Trade Union International of Public and Allied Services (TUI-PS&A), Zola Saphetha, met with a delegation of the PEO leadership during his visit to Cyprus.
The PEO delegation consisted of General Secretary Sotiroula Charalambous and Executive Bureau members Pieris Pieri and Nikos Grigoriou.
During the meeting, the participants exchanged views and experiences on issues affecting workers in both countries.

**Renewal of the Collective Agreement at Nicosia Public Transport**

On Thursday, 30 July 2026, a memorandum of agreement was signed for the renewal of the Collective Agreement between the trade unions OMEPEGE–SEK and SEGDAMELIN–PEO and **Nicosia Public Transport (NPT) Ltd.**

The new agreement is valid for a three-year period, from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028. It provides, among other improvements, for wage increases, an increase in the employer’s contribution to the Provident Fund, a higher shift allowance, increased compensation for weekday overtime, as well as improvements to provisions of the collective agreement relating to working conditions.

On behalf of the company, the agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Julio Tironi.

On behalf of SEGDAMELIN–PEO, the agreement was signed by Stelios Steliou, Central Organising Secretary, while on behalf of OMEPEGE–SEK, it was signed by Nikiforos Pafitis, Nicosia District Secretary of the Transport Workers’ Union.

PEO Participates in the “Federal Solution Now” Mobilisation

PEO participated in the **“Federal Solution Now”** mobilisation organised by the bicommunal initiative **“United Cyprus”** on the occasion of the visit of the United Nations Secretary-General to Cyprus.

The mobilisation took place on Tuesday, 28 July, at 6:30 p.m., outside the Office of the UN Representative in Nicosia.

PEO Participated in Meeting between UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Representatives of Trade Union and Other Civil Society Organisations

During the meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, held on Tuesday, 28 July, at the Office of the UN Representative in Nicosia, PEO reiterated its longstanding and consistent position in support of the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions.

PEO also stressed the importance of safeguarding the acquis of the negotiations and continuing the peace process on the basis of the Guterres Framework, which constitutes the agreed point of reference for achieving a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Furthermore, PEO underlined that cooperation between the two communities, as well as joint action by the trade union movement, is an essential prerequisite for building trust, fostering peace, and creating a shared prospect of prosperity for all Cypriots.

Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) on the 52 Years Since the Twin Crimes of the Coup and Invasion Against Cyprus

This year marks 52 years since the twin crimes of 1974—the coup d’état of July 15 and Turkey’s invasion on July 20—which caused an immense tragedy in Cyprus, resulting in thousands of deaths, refugees, and missing persons.
We are still living with the consequences of this twin crime through Turkey’s ongoing occupation of 37% of Cyprus’s territory.
The coup was not carried out by “reckless people,” as those who wish to whitewash the betrayal committed and distort history characterize the traitors. History cant be erased and the consequences of this twin crime remind us of it every day.
The coup was a series of hate crimes committed by the fascists of EOKA B against democracy and the people who defended it. The arrests of democrats were political; the murders of Leftists were political; the attempted assassination of the democratically elected President and the violent overthrow of democracy were political.
In this tragedy, hundreds of workers members and militants of PEO made the ultimate sacrifice. They were hunted down, arrested, tortured, and murdered by the fascists of EOKA B. Many found themselves on the front lines of the resistance against the invasion and sacrificed their lives for their homeland, while the traitors—their domestic persecutors—hid with their weapons in the mountains, far from the front lines of the war. As PEO, we commemorate the fallen of the Black Summer every year around this time.
The only way to honor their sacrifice is through our commitment to continuing the struggle for a solution and the reunification of our Cyprus.
Guided by the sacrifice of the thousands of workers during the Black Summer of 1974, we, as PEO, will continue to fight with dedication for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality between the two communities, as interpreted in the United Nations resolutions. For one state with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship, and a single international legal personality—demilitarized and independent, without any “guardians” or “protectors”—for a common homeland for all Cypriots.
With the solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our country, the Cypriot people will be able to work toward universal progress in conditions of peace and security within the framework of a unified economy, with a single system of labor relations and working conditions for all workers, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
In cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot trade union organizations that are members of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), PEO will continue, on the basis of class solidarity and unity, to work toward strengthening the front of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot working people, for a solution and reunification.

PEO Cyprus Solidarity Message on the Earthquake in Venezuela
We express our deepest solidarity and support with the working class and the people of Venezuela who are facing the consequences of the devastating earthquake that has caused loss of life, numerous injuries, and extensive material damage in the affected areas.
We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and express our support to the injured, those trapped, the workers, and all those affected, wishing them strength, resilience, and a speedy recovery.
We pay tribute to the courage and selflessness of the rescue teams and all those who are fighting to support the affected population and address the consequences of this disaster.
We reaffirm our commitment to intensifying the struggle for the protection of human life, the strengthening of prevention measures, and the securing of decent living conditions for all peoples around the world.
In these difficult times, the workers of Cyprus stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela as they face yet another difficult challenge.

Meeting between PEO and a Representative of the Polisario Front

On 24 June, the General Secretary of PEO met with Omar Mip, representative of the Polisario Front, who is currently on a tour of Europe.

During the meeting, Omar Mip briefed the General Secretary on the current situation in Western Sahara, the latest developments concerning the issue, and the Polisario Front's position in support of the implementation of United Nations resolutions and the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.

Τhe General Secretary of PEO expressed her solidarity with the Sahrawi people, noting that Cypriot workers understand their struggle, as they too have experienced the consequences of occupation and violations of international law.
