12 MAY – INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY
A Day of Honor – A Day of Struggle
On the occasion of today’s day, ΣΕΒΕΤΤΥΚ ΠΕΟ and the Sectoral Committee of Private Hospitals visited private healthcare facilities across Cyprus, honoring nurses for their valuable contribution.
These images reflect the daily reality of people who support the healthcare sector with dedication, professionalism, and dignity, standing by patients and society every single day.
True recognition of nurses means acknowledging their contribution in practice:
through dignified working conditions, collective agreements, Cost of Living Allowance (COLA), and salary upgrades.

PEO delivered humanitarian aid for the CubPople
PEO, responding to the call of the World Federation of Trade Unions and the Cyprus–Cuba Friendship Association to support the people of Cuba, today delivered to the Cuban ambassador in Cyprus a large quantity of infant milk and pharmaceutical products, which will be sent to Cuba in the coming days.
“The workers of Cyprus have once again confirmed that we are here to support what is just. For us, the struggle of the Cuban people to decide for themselves about their country and their future is deeply human — a struggle tied to the principles and values on which modern humanity must be based,” stressed PEO General Secretary Sotiroula Charalambous.
She added that “we cannot tolerate babies being left without milk because this serves the objective of the United States, which is none other than the collapse of the Cuban Revolution.”
Charalambous also told the Cuban ambassador that the response of workers to PEO’s appeal was moving, and that the collected products were the result of a campaign that lasted just two weeks.
The Cuban ambassador, Rubén Pino Martínez, expressed the gratitude of the Cuban people for the support of Cypriot workers.
“To receive this support, especially when it comes from the working class of Cyprus at a time when the Cuban people are facing these difficulties, reflects the historic and traditional solidarity of the Cypriot people with Cuba,” he said.
Addressing the Cypriot people, he emphasized that the economic, energy, and trade blockade faced daily by the Cuban people is not a virtual reality, but real life.
He also noted that the aid from Cyprus will be sent to two hospitals and one social program.

In the presence of the Ambassador of Cuba to Cyprus, Rubén Pino Martínez, the General Council of PEO yesterday expressed its solidarity with the struggle of the Cuban people, who are fighting against the U.S. blockade that has intensified in recent months.
PEO General Secretary Sotiroula Charalambous stressed that solidarity with Cuba is part of PEO’s struggle. “We do not do this out of habit or instruction, but because the siege of North American imperialism is becoming increasingly inhumane and aggressive against the Cuban nation and, under the current conditions in which its people live, we feel that we must support its workers. Their struggle means something even more important for Cypriot workers, who understand the right of the Cuban people to defend their future, their self-determination, and their ability to live in peace.”
The Cuban ambassador informed the PEO General Council about the life of the Cuban people today, explaining what every moment of shortages and deprivation represents across different sectors of Cuban society as a result of the sixty-year U.S. blockade policy, which every day “worsens and strangles” the daily lives of millions of citizens on the island.

24-hour strike by Support Programs of the Ministry of Education
Employees working in the Support Programs of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, after evaluating recent developments together with their trade unions PASEY-PEO and OEKDY-SEK, unanimously decided in a general assembly to proceed with a 24-hour strike on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
On the day of the strike, a protest will take place outside the Presidential Palace. Participants will gather at the parking area near PASYDY and march towards the Presidential Palace at 11:30 a.m.
The bill to be voted on must safeguard jobs and respect court decisions as well as state legislation. It must also respect the workers who have sustained these programs and provide important social services.
Following years of struggle to abolish the unlawful “purchase of services” system, and after prolonged uncertainty, injustice, and repeated disappointment, workers are sending a clear message: they will not accept further delays or solutions that ignore their labor rights.
The bill submitted to Parliament last December leaves hundreds of workers exposed, ignores union positions, disregards court rulings, and conflicts with both national and European Union legislation.
The strike on March 26 is described as a strike of responsibility, dignity, and demand.
The two unions, OEKDY-SEK and PASEY-PEO, call on all workers to:
• Participate massively and universally in the strike
• Ensure that all programs remain closed
• Join the march to the Presidential Palace in strong numbers
To facilitate participation, buses will depart from all cities.
“Our strength lies in unity and mass participation. No one should be absent. This struggle is for stable employment, security, and respect. It is a struggle for the right to dignity.”
On Thursday, March 26:
We all strike.
We take to the streets.
For ourselves as workers—and for those attending the programs.
— From the unions PASEY-PEO and OEKDY-SEK
