Safe travels with your purring companions!

Did you know Swiss cats don't pay tax? Dogs must be registered and taxed annually (commonly CHF 100–200, depending on the municipality) but cats get a pass entirely.

There's more: Swiss law also says a lone cat must have regular contact with people or visual contact with other cats, because company isn't optional for feline wellbeing here. And if a cat wanders into next door's garden to nap or mark its territory? Neighbours have to live with it! Swiss law treats this as natural behaviour beyond an owner's control.

Cats even ride the train free in a carrier. With around 1.85 million pet cats nationwide, Switzerland is clearly a cat-friendly place.

Should other countries adopt any of these rules?

Tackling the serious problem of Human Trafficking in the Hospitality Sector...

Yesterday, on the World Day Against Trafficking Persons, Ambassador Christoph Burgener participated at a roundtable meeting organized by "Step up - Stop Slavery" in Nicosia. Human trafficking is a grave violation of human rights that exploits brutally the most vulnerable. Together we can help restore hope and protect human dignity! Thank you Director Katerina for organizing and Speaker Stephan for sharing your insights!

Bladder Campion (Silene vulgaris)
🇨🇭 In Switzerland it's enjoyed as an Alpine flower discovered during summer hikes...
🇨🇾 In Cyprus it's associated with spring. Known as strouthkia or tsakrithkia, it is gathered wild and enjoyed scrambled with eggs and sprinkled with lemon juice.
Happy Holidays!

🤍🏔️ BLADDER CAMPION: THE LITTLE BALLOON FLOWER OF ZERMATT’S MEADOWS

The Bladder Campion (Silene vulgaris) may not be as famous as edelweiss or gentian, but it is one of those charming wildflowers that makes Zermatt’s summer trails feel full of life.

Its most distinctive feature is the pale, inflated “bladder” around the flower, a rounded greenish-white calyx marked with delicate veins. From this little balloon shape, the white petals open out with soft split tips, giving the flower a light, airy look among the grass.

Around Zermatt, Bladder Campion is the kind of flower you are more likely to notice on lower hiking trails, sunny meadows, pastures, grassy banks, and rough stony edges rather than only in the most extreme high alpine zones. It fits beautifully into the softer side of the Zermatt landscape, where meadow paths, village-edge slopes, and subalpine grassland are full of small seasonal details.

It usually flowers from June to September in Switzerland, making it a familiar part of the summer walking season. The plant often grows upright in loose clusters, with several pale flowers held above grey-green leaves.

In Zermatt, Bladder Campion is a reminder that not every alpine flower needs bold colours to stand out. Sometimes, the more understated flowers are the ones that make you stop, smile, and look a little closer.
