Resources for Democracy

Resources for Democracy A project being implemented by the NGO Support Centre in collaboration with the University of Nicosi

The project seeks to draw from the expertise and academic excellence of the organizations that comprise the implementing consortium and lay the grounds for the creation of an established, academically accredited programme on Civic Participation in Cyprus. This programme will provide students and CSO practitioners both from Cyprus and the Euro-Mediterranean region with the theoretical understanding

and practical knowledge in the field, contributing towards a vibrant civic society. During the implementing period of the project, August 2014 to July 2015, the consortium will develop a face-to- face course and two online modules, both of which will be academically accredited by the University of Nicosia, along with original academic material on the field. These courses will be available to students and CSO activists, from Cyprus and the region, without any restrictions in terms of ethnicity, gender or age. Additionally, and as part of the project, a regional workshop/conference will be held in Cyprus with the participation of academics and CSO practitioners from the region. Finally, the project will develop an online platform which hosts a variety of tools through which to explore the theory and practice of democratic governance and active citizenship.

"Not since the end of World War I have Arab countries undergone such a momentous upheaval. Conflict has broken out in no fewer than nine Arab countries, and the carnage has reached unimaginable levels of inhumanity"

The violence that has plagued North Africa and the Middle East since the beginning of the Arab Spring may turn out to be just a first taste of what is to come. Without a change of course among the region’s leaders, a further spiral into chaos, violence, and bloodshed is likely to become the only alt…

Dominique Moïsi : "It will undoubtedly be extremely difficult to create an international order that strikes the needed balance between legitimacy and power."

http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/international-system-rising-violence-chaos-by-dominique-moisi-2015-06 .99

As violent conflicts and crises intensify worldwide, from Africa to Asia, it is becoming abundantly clear that there is no longer a guarantor of order – not international law or even a global hegemon – that countries view as legitimate and credible. The international system is clearly in need of an…
