The development and implementation of a "Cyprus Green Deal" throughout our country will be an agreement between the two communities, the Turkish Cypriot and the Greek Cypriot community (even before the solution of the Cyprus problem). The idea of Αντίστροφοι Πόλοι / Zıt Kutuplar / Reverse Poles has started 3 years ago as a radio program that is since broadcasted weekly on Saturday morning from 08:
00 to 09:00 in Politis FM 107.6.
Αντίστροφοι Πόλοι has been from the start based on the philosophy that the sustainable development in Cyprus is determined by its nature, atmosphere, sea, actually the whole ecosystem of the island unaffected by the political situation creating the present partition. This view is in line with how the European Union has recently outlined the framework for the Green Deal, describing the ecosystems of all 27 member states as one. According to this vision, Αντίστροφοι Πόλοι started in the second year of the radio show, broadcasting bi-communally with the participation of a Turkish Cypriot co-presenter. After only a short time it became obvious that the efforts would be even more effective, if this radio show had the opportunity to be broadcasted in the northern part of the island as well. Accordingly, a joint search for the right partner station in the North started by the co-presenters Pandelis Sophocleous and Nuri Sılay, as well as Dionisis Dionisou, the director of Politis. After a short time, this search was successful and since June this year, Αντίστροφοι Πόλοι / Zıt Kutuplar radio program is broadcasted once a week (Tuesday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00) with the same content and philosophy in SiM FM 98.6 with the financial support of European Parliament office in Cyprus. To create even more awareness the co-presenters have since been publishing articles as co-writers, featuring a similar content to the radio programs, on a weekly base: Sundays in Yeni Düzen newspaper and Mondays in Politis newspaper. After 2 months of producing the Αντίστροφοι Πόλοι / Zıt Kutuplar radio program as well as publishing articles on both sides of the island with the financial support of Εuropean Parlament office in Cyprus, we see that with our approach we actually reach wide circles of our target groups and we can proudly see an impact. At the same time, we see that our environment is in desperate need of quicker and more intense action since it is starting to show severe signs of global warming not only but also with the frequent and massive fires. What supports us in our opinion that our efforts are fruitful is the fact that the interest of politicians, academics, activists and professionals from all over the island has been extremely encouraging and we already had the opportunity to host an impressive range of well-known personalities in our program. This brings us now to why we are contacting you: wouldn’t it be even more effective to broadcast our weekly radio co-production on a daily basis to create utmost awareness among our citizens and decisionmakers? Definitely yes, however, we would need to find courageous, dedicated and generous organizations like you that would contribute to the realization of this vision. As we experience every day, there is no point and it wouldn’t be realistic to exclude one part of the island from the vital ecological developments, investments and regulations which are needed and expected with the roll out of the European Green Deal. As you know the European Commission, the European Parliament, as well as all EU Member States have recently presented the new strategy, the European Green Deal, with the target to turn the European Community into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy and this development will include all the Member States, with the following three main goals:
No net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050
Decoupling the economic growth from excessive resource use
No person, no community and no place should be excluded or marginalized
In our opinion, the deployment of a new pillar called "Immediate Reunification of the Ecosystem" is urgently needed for our island, so that within the framework of the European Green Deal, the Cyprus Green Deal can be implemented throughout our country thus following the philosophy of the European Green Deal saying no person, no community and no places will be excluded and marginalized. Therefore, the main objective of the above-described expansion of our program will be the promotion and implementation of the European Green Deal, throughout Cyprus even before the solution of the Cyprus problem. As a consequence, this will eventually contribute to the solution as a peace building project.
