Generation for Change CY

Generation for Change CY Generation for Change CY (GFC) is a grassroots nonprofit promoting diversity, inclusion & equity.

Generation for Change CY is committed to positive social change through supporting vulnerable and marginalised communities – including but not limited to persons of low socioeconomic status, refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, and any persons facing discrimination. We seek to harness the power of diversity to advocate a fair and inclusive society. Our work:

▪️ Donation Drive: We support the disad

vantaged and those living in difficult circumstances, with basic needs such as food, hygiene essentials, clothes, bedding, and kitchen utensils. We provide support packages to 30 different families on a weekly basis.

▪️ e-Learning for Change: We provide Greek and English language classes to equip non-Greek or non-English speakers and migrants living in Cyprus with the necessary Greek or English language skills to assist with their social and economic integration.

▪️ Afterschool for Change: We provide a safe space, inclusive to all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, to children aged 7-14 years old. The programme aims to facilitate the development of their Greek language, digital and interpersonal skills, as well as their exposure to different cultures.

▪️ Hope Team: We are involved in creating and running Hope Team, a male basketball team that Coach Kostas Eglezzos created. Through basketball, we aim to promote the participants' integration, health and human connection.

▪️ Cyprus Got Game: We organise intercultural sports events (i.e., basketball, futsal, etc.) to bring together people from different cultures, races, religions, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientations, and walks of life with one common goal; to play, compete, and celebrate with each other.

▪️ Gathering for Understanding series: This series of events explores topics such as privilege, women's voices, and discrimination through artistic activities. Ultimately, we aim to facilitate the establishment of intercultural and inter-communal relationships.

▪️ Library For Change: A multicultural library designed to grow from the community for the community where everyone can borrow a book, suggest or donate, or facilitate the book club.

Building on Generation 2.0 RED's (G2RED) decades of advocacy experience, our latest collaborative learning session explored practical approaches to strengthening advocacy through lived experiences and community-led action.

The workshop focused on turning community experiences into collective evidence and political demands, building partnerships while keeping communities at the center of decision-making, and recognizing that meaningful change does not end with a new law or policy. It also requires ensuring that these changes are effectively implemented in practice.

By exchanging experiences and learning from G2RED's approach, we continue to strengthen and refine DIGNIFIED's advocacy work towards more inclusive and rights-based social welfare systems.

The project DIGNIFIED - Strengthening Civil Society to Promote Rights-Based Social Welfare is implemented within the framework of the PLATO programme, with Generation for Change CY as the implementing body. PLATO is co-funded by the European Union through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) Programme, the Bodossaki Foundation, and the NGO Support Centre, with a total grant amount of €3.1 million.

Πώς νιώθεις όταν ακούς ότι δεν ανήκεις εδώ;

What does it feel like to be told you do not belong here?

At our event Athletes Against Hate, we asked athletes with refugee and migrant backgrounds how they feel when they hear or experience stereotypes and negative comments, and what it is like to see those same comments directed at people like them.

In recent days, a seventeen-year-old athlete born in Cyprus, the daughter of a refugee from Varosha, spoke publicly about the racist comments she received after her international successes. She was born here, raised here, and represents this country at the highest level. As she wrote herself, she may not have Cypriot blood, but she is a proud Cypriot.

That is exactly what these stereotypes reveal. They are not really about residence status, or about how long someone has been here. They are about who is considered to belong.

Listen to what our athletes have to say.

PASS is implemented by Generation for Change CY and Athletes for Hope and funded by the Collaborative Action Grant of the Olympic Refuge Foundation under the Sports for Refugees Coalition. The event was held under the auspices of UNHCR Cyprus.

Through the DIGNIFIED project, our team is gathering the experiences of disadvantaged applicants for international protection in Cyprus through surveys and interviews.

The survey will help document people's experiences accessing reception conditions, housing, healthcare, social welfare services, and other essential support. The insights gathered will contribute to evidence-based advocacy and policy recommendations that better reflect people's lived experiences.

If you are an asylum seeker aged 18+ who arrived in Cyprus in or after 2023, or a refugee or beneficiary of subsidiary protection aged 18+ who received your status in or after June 2025, you can still express your interest in participating by completing the following form (also available in our bio): https://forms.office.com/e/CFrfetV9Ah

Participants who complete the survey will receive a small financial token of appreciation in the form of a supermarket voucher, in recognition of their valuable time and contribution.

SAVE THE DATE!

Join us for the interactive event Beyond the Game.

On Thursday 27 August, from 18:30 to 20:45, we are taking over the lower level of Eleftheria Square in Nicosia for a free, open-air evening marking the close of our project PASS, Play Against Stereotypes and Smears.

You will find an interactive exhibition you walk through rather than sit in front of, with photography from across the project and our Myth Buster material on display. There will be listening points where you can watch the participant testimonies and the panel discussion with headphones at your own pace, and a live Myth Hunters workshop, the same session we ran in schools across Cyprus, open to anyone who wants to join.

There will also be sports activities to drop in and out of, including table tennis, table football, volleyball passing, human Jenga and more. No competition, no teams, no skill required. Plus an open discussion where you tell us what you make of it all, with refreshments and music throughout.

Come for ten minutes or stay for the whole evening. Bring someone.

PASS is implemented by Generation for Change CY in collaboration with Athletes for Hope, funded by the Collaborative Action Grant of the Olympic Refuge Foundation under the Sports for Refugees Coalition.

Conversational fluency arrives in about two years. The academic language a teenager needs to actually learn in a new school takes far longer.

That gap is where migrant and refugee students are quietly lost, and it is why after-school language provision matters long after a student starts sounding fluent.

Drawing on three rounds of the CREATE Language School in Cyprus, we reflect on what we have learned about bridging this gap and supporting migrant and refugee teenagers as they enter formal education.

Meaningful change starts with listening, learning, and working together.

As part of the DIGNIFIED project, we launched our collaborative learning exchange with Generation 2.0 RED (G2RED), bringing the two organizations together to share knowledge and strengthen rights-based advocacy.

By exchanging experiences and good practices from Cyprus and Greece, this collaboration will strengthen our advocacy efforts and support more effective, evidence-based responses to the challenges faced by disadvantaged applicants for international protection.

This is the first step in an ongoing exchange that will continue throughout the project, supporting the development of DIGNIFIED's research, advocacy activities, and policy recommendations.

Thank you to G2RED for their partnership, and we look forward to the exchanges ahead!

Every story deserves to be heard.

After months of creativity, reflection, and collaboration, we are proud to present the Echoes of Expression Book, a collection of stories, poems, and creative writing created by participants from diverse backgrounds.

Through a series of Creative Writing Workshops, participants strengthened their English language skills while exploring their experiences, perspectives, dreams, and identities through storytelling and creative expression. The result is a unique collection that celebrates creativity, diversity, and the power of sharing our stories.

Come discover the book, enjoy delicious food, take part in fun activities, and celebrate this special milestone as we bring the Echoes of Expression project to a close.
