UNESCO chair in Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment

The establishment of UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment at the University of Cyprus, making good use of Cyprus’ geographical position in the crossroad of populations and cultures, satisfies the cultural diversity priority and contributes to development at an international level, paying special attention to the reinforcing of gender mainstreaming in developing countries and countries in transition. Thus, it acts as Centre of Services and research excellence. Gender equality and women’s empowerment has been identified as a challenge and a target at the national level of Cyprus, as well as a regional (European) and global priority in various European Union’s and United Nations’ conferences, summits and in the context of United Nation reform. Guided by these events, gender equality is considered a global priority in the new Medium-Term Strategy 2008-2013 as well as in the 2008-2009 Programme and Budget for UNESCO. The UNESCO Chair in Gender\Equality undertakes an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation activities in the field of women and gender studies. Research-product guidelines, standards and measures concerning knowledge, change of attitudes, sensitization of employees and employers in public and private sector, rise of awareness of students and young generation and sensitization of the Media will be set up. Students, academicians, GOs and NGO’s interested in the field join forces to empower women for promoting gender mainstreaming.
