🌍 ERATOSTHENES CoE at the EU Space General Assembly 2026

Today, Dr Maria Anastasiadou represented the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence at the EU Space General Assembly, presenting our vision for the CAMS Health Demonstrator and the future development of environmental health services in Cyprus.

The presentation showcased how Earth Observation data, atmospheric monitoring, and Artificial Intelligence can be combined to support public health decision-making through:

✅ Daily Health Risk Indices
✅ Dust Health Alerts
✅ Pollen Allergy Risk Maps
✅ UV Exposure Warnings
✅ Early Warning Services for vulnerable populations

The initiative builds upon the operational services already developed by the ERATOSTHENES CoE, including AirDataHub, the Dust Data Cube, and the UV Index Platform, demonstrating how Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) products can be transformed into practical tools that benefit citizens, healthcare professionals, and public authorities.

Through innovation, collaboration, and the use of space-based technologies, we continue to strengthen Cyprus' role in delivering impactful environmental and health services at both national and European levels.

🌍 Επίσκεψη στο Δημοτικό Σχολείο Αγλαντζιάς – Παγκόσμια Ημέρα της Γης

Σήμερα, 21 Απριλίου, είχα τη χαρά να επισκεφθώ το Δημοτικό Σχολείο Αγλαντζιάς, στο πλαίσιο της European Researchers' Night και της Παγκόσμια Ημέρα της Γης.

Μαζί με τους μαθητές της Ε και Στ τάξης, ταξιδέψαμε… από τη Γη στο διάστημα! 🛰️
Μιλήσαμε για το πώς οι επιστήμονες παρατηρούν τον πλανήτη μας από δορυφόρους, αλλά και για κάτι που μας αφορά όλους: τον αέρα που αναπνέουμε.

Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δόθηκε στο φαινόμενο της σκόνης από τη Σαχάρα 🌵, που επηρεάζει συχνά την Κύπρο, καθώς και στο πώς η επιστήμη μάς βοηθά να προβλέπουμε και να προστατευόμαστε.

Η συζήτηση έγινε διαδραστικά, με ερωτήσεις και παραδείγματα από την καθημερινότητα των παιδιών, αναδεικνύοντας πόσο σημαντικές είναι οι μικρές μας επιλογές για το περιβάλλον.

💡 Μιλήσαμε για απλές δράσεις που μπορεί να κάνει ο καθένας:
✔️ επαναχρησιμοποιούμενα μπουκάλια
✔️ λιγότερη χρήση αυτοκινήτου
✔️ ανακύκλωση

Η ενέργεια και ο ενθουσιασμός των παιδιών ήταν πραγματικά εντυπωσιακά! 👏

🌍 Visit to Aglantzia Primary School – Earth Day

Today, April 21st, I had the pleasure of visiting Aglantzia Primary School as part of the European Researchers' Night and the Earth Day.

Together with students from 5th and 6th grade, we explored how scientists observe our planet from space 🛰️ and discussed something that affects us all: the air we breathe.

We talked about air pollution, with a focus on Saharan dust 🌵 that frequently reaches Cyprus, and how science helps us monitor and predict these events to better protect ourselves.

The session was interactive, with questions and real-life examples, showing how even small daily choices can make a big difference for the environment.

💡 We highlighted simple actions such as:
✔️ using reusable bottles
✔️ reducing car use
✔️ recycling

The students’ curiosity and engagement were truly inspiring! 👏
The future of our planet is in their hands — and in ours.

We had the opportunity to attend the 5th ECMWF–ESA Machine Learning Workshop at the DAMA Technopole in Bologna — a key event at the intersection of AI, Earth Observation, and climate science.

A highlight of the experience was participating in a guided visit to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) infrastructure, where we explored the high-performance computing systems that support operational weather and climate prediction. Seeing these systems up close gave valuable insight into the scale and complexity behind modern forecasting.

🎯 Workshop motivation and scope

The workshop focused on the rapidly growing role of Machine Learning (ML) in Earth System Observation and Prediction (ESOP).

ML is now transforming the field:

From supporting tools → to end-to-end data-driven forecasting systems
From research concepts → to operational applications

At the same time, important challenges remain:

How far can purely data-driven models go without physics?
How to best combine ML with physical models for reliable predictions?

In parallel, the field is evolving technologically:

Transition from CPU → GPU/TPU-based HPC systems
Emerging paradigms like quantum, edge, and neuromorphic computing
🧠 Key thematic areas

The workshop covered a wide range of topics, including:

Hybrid ML–physics systems for weather and climate prediction
End-to-end ML frameworks for forecasting
ML applications for Earth Observation data
High-performance computing and next-generation architectures
Machine learning for Digital Twins of the Earth system

The programme provided a comprehensive snapshot of the state of the art, combining keynotes, technical sessions, and discussions across the ESOP community

🚀 Impact for our work

Beyond the technical content, the workshop was highly motivational. It reinforced the importance of:

Developing AI-based downscaling approaches
Combining CAMS, satellite, and in-situ data
Moving towards impact-driven applications (e.g. health, environment, policy)

This experience strongly motivates us to push forward and deliver high-quality, innovative solutions within our projects at the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence.

🌍 CAMS at “Climate Neutral Blue Cities by 2030” – Limassol

We were proud to participate in the international conference “Climate Neutral Blue Cities by 2030” in Limassol, bringing together key European and local stakeholders working towards climate-neutral, resilient coastal cities.

Through the CAMS National Collaboration Programme (CAMS NCP), we highlighted how air quality data and atmospheric services can support smarter decision-making for cities, including:

🔹 Monitoring and forecasting air pollution & dust events
🔹 Supporting EU air quality compliance and policy planning
🔹 Combining satellite, model and in-situ data for local applications
🔹 Enhancing tools for environmental intelligence in urban planning

As Limassol moves forward as one of the EU Mission Cities, initiatives like CAMS play a key role in supporting the green and blue transition through data-driven solutions.

🌍 CAMS NCP Cyprus – Kick-Off Meeting | 26 February 2026

We officially launched the new CAMS National Collaboration Programme (2026–2028) at the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, marking the start of an important new phase in strengthening national air-quality services in Cyprus.

This new contract builds on previous experience and focuses on:

🔹 Direct integration of CAMS products into national systems (AirDataHub & Dust Data Cube)
🔹 AI-based national downscaling of air-quality forecasts (≤5 km resolution)
🔹 Enhanced stakeholder engagement and institutional alignment
🔹 Development of a health-oriented demonstrator
🔹 Long-term sustainability and operational impact

Our goal is clear:
👉 Strengthen the operational use of CAMS products in Cyprus
👉 Support compliance with upcoming EU air-quality directives
👉 Provide robust scientific evidence for decision-making

🌤️ Dust Forecast Update – Conditions Improving Over Cyprus 🌤️

Yesterday’s forecast from AirQube indicated that a dust plume would pass over the region. Today’s conditions confirm that dust levels have dropped and air quality has improved across Cyprus.

This highlights how near-real-time atmospheric forecasting helps track dust transport and support timely public awareness.

Dust Transport Over Cyprus – AOD Animation for November 2025

This GIF depicts the day-by-day evolution of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) at 550 nm over the Eastern Mediterranean in November 2025.
Several dust plumes originating from North Africa and the Middle East are moving toward Cyprus, reducing visibility and overall air quality.
AOD helps us visualise how much sunlight is blocked or scattered by airborne particles; higher values, in combination with the animation, can correspond to dust events or increased atmospheric pollution.

Inspiring the Next Generation: ERATOSTHENES CoE Visits Schools in Limassol!
As part of the European Researchers’ Night 2025 activities, organized under the auspices of the Research and Innovation Foundation (Ίδρυμα Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας/ Research and Innovation Foundation), Mr. Orestis Livadiotis from the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence visited the Gymnasium of Linopetra and the Lyceum of Agios Nikolaos in Limassol as part of the European Cities Day on the 31st of October.
The visits aimed to inspire students and raise awareness about the vital role of Earth Observation, air quality monitoring, and environmental research in understanding and protecting our planet. Through interactive presentations and real-life examples from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). Mr. Livadiotis demonstrated how satellite and ground-based data are used to monitor dust events, pollution, and climate impacts over Cyprus and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region.
👉🏻 These outreach activities reflect the ERATOSTHENES CoE’s commitment to fostering scientific curiosity and promoting STEM education among young Cypriots, encouraging them to explore future careers in Earth Observation, Big Earth Data Analytics, and environmental science.
