Putting a little spotlight on our alliance member Zero Food Waste Cyprus 💚

Zero Food Waste Cyprus goes to the OXI veggie market every Saturday, collects leftover fruits and vegetables from farmers that would otherwise go to waste, and then redistributes it to people who need it. This work is built on trust, relationships, and a lot of care and it is run entirely by volunteers.

It is a simple yet powerful example of how food that is still edible can be shared rather than thrown away.
As an Alliance, we support their work through our project, *, with the aim of reducing food waste generated at open-air farmers’ markets. As part of this support, some of the actions we did were to purchase a storage unit for Zero Food Waste Cyprus, as well as 6 compost bins for food that is no longer suitable for eating, produce a replication guide for the process that happens at the market, count the data and produce statistics. Check out more on our website.

They are often looking for volunteers, so if you’d like to join for a day, see their work up close, and support in a practical way, this is a great chance to do so.

Why do we waste food at home without even realising it?
A new article by looks at how small behavioural nudges around shopping, storing food, understanding labels, and using leftovers can help reduce household food waste in practice. Smart habits matter, but they also need the right tools and support. Worth a read.

Dye your Easter eggs with the colors of nature - it can be done with ingredients you probably have at home, avoiding chemical dyes. 🥚🌿

🌻For yellow: turmeric or dried chamomile or orange/lemon peels
🧅For red/pink: beets or skins from white onions
🌱For green: spinach or nettle or parsley
☕️For brown/reddish-brown: blacktea or coffee beans or onion peels
🥕For orange: carrot or paprika
🫐For blue/purple: red cabbage or blueberries

And don’t forget: choose organic or free-range eggs (if possible).
We’ve shared a simple step-by-step guide on our website, including instructions for making leaf-pattern eggs using natural materials. Read more on our website (link in bio).

This can be a fun activity for families, children, and friends, while keeping celebrations creative and a little lighter on the environment.

Short answer: “Use what you already have, reuse creatively, celebrate mindfully”.

Longer answer: Easter celebrations can be joyful, creative, and welcoming without needing lots of new things.
This year, we’re inviting you to look at Easter through the zero-waste hierarchy: first, reduce what you don’t need; then reuse what you already have; and, where possible, choose simple, lasting alternatives.

A few ideas:
⭕️bring out decorations from previous years
⭕️reuse jars, baskets, fabric, and ribbons
⭕️make simple decorations with natural materials
⭕️borrow, share, or swap celebration items with family and friends
⭕️choose reusable tableware and cloth instead of disposable options
⭕️plan meals and shopping more realistically to avoid overbuying
⭕️serve manageable portions and go back for seconds if needed
⭕️store leftovers well and enjoy them over the following days
⭕️share extra food with family, friends, or neighbours

A lower-waste Easter does not mean doing everything perfectly. It means making a few thoughtful choices that keep celebrations meaningful while creating less waste.

Carnival has colour, music and full streets, but also more than 40 tons of trash collected every year, and the number keeps growing. Sad. 🎪

We don’t always see it. Municipal staff and volunteers clean through the night, and the next day the streets look “normal” again. But this is the real picture and the real scale.
The most common waste found after Carnival (parades and other events): Spray cans, tons of single-use items, beer cans, soft drink cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and cups, used for just a few hours, then just tossed to the ground.

This isn’t just about “littering”. It’s about how events are designed and what products are allowed and promoted.

🔴 We need more systemic solutions:
/Ban harmful spray cans
/Reuse systems instead of disposables
/More mindful consumption
/Events designed to celebrate without producing tons of waste

Reach out to us if you are not sure how to avoid waste and you want to start a more zero waste lifestyle!

Whether you were born in a carnival city or not… we’re pretty sure you’ve got costumes, accessories, wigs, shiny bits and “I might use this one day” pieces somewhere in your closet 😏
The truth? You don’t need brand-new carnival clothes to look good and have fun.

You need creativity, small changes, and the right fun details to transform what you already have.
This year, try making Carnival a little zero-waste  ♻️

Bring the items you don’t use anymore, swap them, let someone else love them and, of course, take something back to build your new look.

Come on Wednesday, February 11th, at Friends of the Earth Cyprus premises (361, Agiou Andreou) from 5-8 pm to swap and set the vibe for the carnival season!

You can already start bringing items!📍 Drop-off points in the next post 👀

Last week we gathered around a table to slow down, share food, and rethink how we relate to it.
The ✨ Zero Waste Dinner ✨ was exactly that: good food made with care, conversations that flowed easily, and a reminder that food is never just food, it’s culture, memory, effort, and responsibility.

Using local, seasonal ingredients and techniques that respect what we already have, we explored how leftovers can become something tasty again, not waste. The “take what you need” corner was filled with surplus and near-expiry food that simply needed a bit more love, offered by two local businesses in Cyprus that you need to follow Agno and Rescuedbox.

Huge thanks to executive Chef and sous chef Yiangos Ioannou for the thoughtful menu and storytelling through food. Big thank you to 🍷 for treating us to their exceptional wines and of course to everyone who joined again this year.

Find all the recipes 🥗 through the link in bio and check out our e-booklet as well on the website featuring more ideas for creatively using common household food leftovers.

This event was organised within the framework of the collaboration between the and the LIFE IP – Zero Waste Cyprus project.

Last weekend we turned old ornaments into new favourites ✨
With the help of the amazing from , we hosted a cosy upcycling workshop filled with kids getting creative, hands covered in glue, stories being shared, and lots of festive energy.

By the end of the day, our little tree was full of second-life decorations, proof that waste can always become something meaningful again.

Thank you to everyone who came, created and shared the moment 🤍

More zero-waste events are coming soon. What would you like to see next?
