On Monday, we came together for a practical and thought-provoking afternoon on “Working Smarter with AI”, led by Monica Ioannidou Polemitis.

What made the session particularly valuable was that it wasn’t really about AI for the sake of AI. It was about looking at the work we already do and asking better questions: Where can AI genuinely help? What should we automate? What still needs human judgement? And where does it simply not make sense to use AI?

Through demonstrations, discussion and hands-on exercises, we explored real workplace examples and thought about how AI could become part of everyday workflows.

Perhaps most importantly, we had the opportunity to bring our own challenges from across the maritime sector into the conversation and consider whether AI was actually the right solution — taking into account data, feasibility, risk, workflow and the role of human oversight.

A big thank you to Monica for making a complex and fast-moving topic approachable, practical and relevant to our everyday work, and to everyone who joined, shared experiences and asked the difficult questions.

We left with plenty to think about — and, hopefully, a few things to try when we’re back at our desks.

Thank you to everyone who attended!

“Here Only Monachus” — Environmental Creative Workshop at the Limassol Municipal Art Gallery

Guided by their imagination and supported by music educator and researcher Christina Charalambidou and early years educator Rebecca Katsaris, representing the Enalia Physis Environmental Research Centre, the children took part in the environmental creative workshop “Here Only Monachus”, creating their very own musical piece inspired by the sea, its sounds, and the remarkable Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus).

As you listen, you might wonder:
– Which musical instruments can you hear?
– When does the mother seal speak to her pup?
– What do you imagine they might be saying to each other?
– Can you hear the tongue drums, Koshi chimes and stirring drum?
– Can you feel the gentle splashing of the sea and hear the song of the seashells?

Let yourselves be carried away by the sounds created by the children — with heart, imagination and a love for the sea and its creatures!

As part of WISTA Cyprus’ activities marking World Maritime Day 2026, we wanted to celebrate in a way that reflects something at the heart of our maritime community: our connection with the sea.

On 19 September, we made a little more room for something different: time together, with our families, away from the usual pace of work.

Our Family Workshop, Here Only Monachus, brought members and children together to discover the Mediterranean monk seal through stories, music, movement and plenty of imagination. There were instruments, sounds, creative experiments and, most importantly, children and adults learning and enjoying the experience side by side.

Thank you to our members who joined us and brought their families along. It was lovely to see our WISTA community in a different setting, with our children becoming part of that community too.

Thank you to Rebecca Katsaris from Enalia Physis for leading the workshop with such warmth and energy, and to Dr. Christina Charalambidou for bringing music so naturally into the experience. You gave the children space to explore, create and simply be curious.

Thank you also to the Limassol Municipal Gallery for hosting us!

And a special thank you to all the children who took part. Your questions, enthusiasm and creativity were a big part of what made the morning so enjoyable.

The sea is central to so much of what connects us as a maritime community. As we mark World Maritime Day, this was a lovely reminder that our connection with the sea is also something we can share with the next generation, through curiosity, creativity and time spent together.

Thank you to everyone who made the morning what it was. We’re very glad we did this. 💙🌊

Some of the most meaningful moments happen when we step away from our usual routines and come together in a different way.

Tomorrow, our members and their families will join us for Here Only Monachus, a unique experience exploring the Mediterranean through storytelling, music, creativity and play.

We can't wait to spend the morning with you.

See you tomorrow. 💙

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our WISTA Cyprus Summer Get-Together. ☀️💙

It was such a pleasure to press pause on our busy schedules and spend an evening simply enjoying good conversations, catching up with familiar faces, and getting to know some of our newer members a little better.

Evenings like these remind us that WISTA is built not only on professional connections, but on the friendships, support, and sense of community we share. It was wonderful to see so many of you and to celebrate the start of summer together.

We wish everyone a relaxing, joyful, and well-deserved summer break. Enjoy the holidays, take time to recharge, and we look forward to seeing you all again in September for another exciting season of WISTA Cyprus activities.

Have a wonderful summer! 🌊☀️

Some evenings stay with you long after they're over, and our Annual Gala Dinner was certainly one of them.

On 12 June, we came together to celebrate under the theme Dolce Vita—an evening filled with wonderful conversations, laughter, delicious food, music, and the joy of spending time with a community that continues to inspire and support one another.

A heartfelt thank you to all our members who joined us and made the evening so special. Your presence is what brings WISTA Cyprus to life.

We are equally grateful to our generous sponsors for their invaluable support. Your partnership made this beautiful evening possible, and we truly appreciate your continued commitment to our association.

A special congratulations goes to our lucky raffle winner, Marina Katsantoni, who won an overnight hotel stay. We hope you enjoy a well-deserved getaway!

Thank you to everyone who helped create such a memorable evening

On 24 June, WISTA Cyprus hosted an engaging event in collaboration with ITIC, focused on BIMCO SHIPMAN 2024 and its practical implications for the shipping industry.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our speakers, Geraldine Koon and Ester Toumpouris. As highly experienced maritime lawyers, they brought a practical and insightful perspective to the discussion, helping attendees navigate the key changes and considerations surrounding the updated SHIPMAN form.

We are also grateful to Safe Bulkers for generously hosting us and providing the venue for the event.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who joined us. The thoughtful questions and lively discussion reflected the importance of the topic and how it affects professionals from a variety of backgrounds, not just ship managers.

Behind every journey at sea, there is a person making it possible.

Someone away from home.

Someone working through long hours and unpredictable conditions.

Someone carrying responsibility that many of us never see.

This year’s message — “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks” — brings that reality into focus.

We take a moment today not only to recognise the vital role of seafarers, but to acknowledge the challenges and sacrifices behind it.

Their contribution connects the world — even when it remains out of sight.
