🌿 Cyprus Dysmenorrhea (CYPDY) Project: The Complete Results Series

Welcome to the complete results series from the Cyprus Dysmenorrhea (CYPDY) Project.

The CYPDY Project is a prospective observational study that followed hundreds of women across Cyprus to better understand period pain (dysmenorrhea) and explore its potential relationship with vitamin D status and other aspects of women's health.

Participants contributed by:
• Completing health questionnaires through the CYCLE App: https://cyclehealth.eu
• Attending two study visits approximately 3–5 months apart
• Providing blood samples for vitamin D and other laboratory analyses

Their commitment has generated valuable evidence that will help researchers and healthcare professionals better understand menstrual pain and improve future women's healthcare.

The information presented in this series is based on findings from the Cyprus Dysmenorrhea (CYPDY) Project and is intended for educational purposes. It should not replace individual medical advice. If you have concerns about your menstrual health, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Vitamin D deficiency is common among women of reproductive age—even in countries with abundant sunshine.

Our research highlights the importance of continuing to investigate Vitamin D as part of a holistic approach to menstrual health.

The next step is clinical research to determine whether optimizing Vitamin D status can improve menstrual health outcomes.

Lower Vitamin D levels were associated with active period pain in our study.

Importantly, the association remained even after adjusting for seasonal differences and supplement use.

While these findings are promising, they represent an association—not evidence that Vitamin D alone can treat menstrual pain.

Further research is needed.

Why does women's health research matter?

For too long, women's reproductive health has been underfunded, under-researched and often misunderstood.

The Cyprus Dysmenorrhea Project was established to better understand the impact of period pain, investigate factors such as Vitamin D, and strengthen women's health research across Cyprus.

One of the study's most striking findings revealed that 46% of women said they would not visit a doctor even if severe period pain prevented them from going to school or work.

This highlights not only the burden of period pain—but also the urgent need for greater awareness, education and evidence-based healthcare.

Together, we can help ensure that women's pain is recognised, researched and taken seriously.

Not all pelvic pain behaves the same.

In our study, lower Vitamin D levels were associated with active period pain, but not with pain during in*******se or acyclical pelvic pain.

These findings suggest Vitamin D may be involved in the biological mechanisms underlying menstrual pain rather than pelvic pain in general.

Could Vitamin D play a role in period pain? ☀️💜

In our research, women experiencing active period pain had lower Vitamin D levels than those without active period pain.

One particularly interesting finding was that every 10 ng/mL increase in Vitamin D was associated with an 18% lower likelihood of active period pain, even after accounting for seasonal differences and supplement use.

However, it's important to remember that this study found an association—not causation. More research is needed to determine whether improving Vitamin D status could help reduce menstrual pain.

Did you know that almost 70% of women in our study did not have optimal Vitamin D levels?

Our research involving 1,217 women aged 16–45 in Cyprus found that Vitamin D insufficiency is common, particularly during the winter months.

In this carousel, we explore:
☀️ How Vitamin D levels varied
❄️ The impact of seasonal changes
💊 The relationship between supplement use and Vitamin D status
👩 Whether age made a difference

Understanding these patterns helps us build a clearer picture of women's health and informs future research.

Did you know Vitamin D does much more than support healthy bones? ☀️

Emerging research suggests it may also play a role in inflammation, muscle function and pain signalling—all of which are important when studying menstrual pain.

In this carousel, we explore:
✔ Why Vitamin D matters
✔ What influences your Vitamin D levels
✔ Why researchers are studying its relationship with period pain

💜 Because better knowledge leads to better health.

Period pain is common—but severe period pain should never be considered "normal."

Findings from the Cyprus Dysmenorrhea Project show that severe menstrual pain is linked not only to gynecological conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and fibroids, but also to anxiety, fatigue, reduced quality of life, and lost days at work or school.

Understanding the cause of your pain is the first step toward better care.

💜 Listen to your body. Your pain deserves to be taken seriously.
