Today is the 100th Anniversary of the first emergency escape using an issued parachute by Pilot Officer Eric Pentland.

He became the 31st member of the Caterpillar Club but the first life was saved by a specialist trade - RAF Survival Equipment Fitters one which was the Inception of Sir Edward H***e Secretary for Air.

The outcome 100 years later is thousands of lives saved by a small group of Men and Women including the successful airborne assaults during Operation Biting, Operation Overlord and Arnhem. Through to Suez, Tristan Da Cunna this year.

Always the silent back room men and women.

🎉 Happy 107th Birthday, Colin Cole!

Colin marked his remarkable birthday surrounded by friends at the Veterans' Centre at RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen.

A D-Day veteran and the last surviving member of the RAF Sea Rescue team involved in the Normandy landings, Colin spent years rescuing downed pilots in the English Channel, later dedicating his career to teaching, educational psychology and supporting his local community.

When asked about reaching 107, Colin's response was characteristically modest: "It's just another day!"

His story is a powerful reminder of the generations of service, resilience and community spirit that continue to shape lives across the UK.

And his secret to a long and happy life?

"Mispent youth and keeping fit," he says with a twinkle in his eye.

From everyone at Veterans’ Foundation, we wish Colin a very happy birthday and thank him for a lifetime of service to others.
