The Europa Nostra Heritage Hub in Nicosia was present at a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres and other civil society representatives from both communities on 28 July.

In her remarks, and through a letter co-signed by Prof. Dr. Hermann Parzinger, Executive President of Europa Nostra, Androulla Vassiliou, Vice-President of Europa Nostra and Leader of the Europa Nostra Heritage Hub in Nicosia, highlighted the need for the restoration and revitalisation of the cultural heritage of the Buffer Zone of the walled city of Nicosia. The Buffer Zone offers a unique opportunity to preserve a shared heritage while supporting confidence-building between the island's communities.

The appeal builds on decades of inspiring bi-communal collaboration between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot heritage professionals and civil society organisations, recognised through the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards, as well as the momentum generated during the European Cultural Heritage Summit 2026, organised by Europa Nostra and the Europa Nostra Heritage Hub in Nicosia from 26 to 30 May 2026.

As renewed diplomatic efforts continue, safeguarding our shared cultural heritage can make a meaningful contribution to a more peaceful and united future for Cyprus.

πŸŽ₯ Watch Episode 2: https://7mostendangered.eu/bound-by-heritage/

In the second episode of Bound by Heritage, Italian author Nicoletta Verna visits the Synagogue of Siena, Italy, one of the sites featured in Europa Nostra's 7 Most Endangered Programme.

A place of worship for Siena's Jewish community for more than two centuries, the synagogue also bears witness to centuries of persecution and to the trauma of the Holocaust. Following structural damage caused by the 2023 earthquake, and subsequent successful campaigning for its restoration, the synagogue reopened to the public in 2025.

Drawing on the themes of her novel β€œI giorni di Vetro”, Nicoletta reflects on the importance of memory and on how both places and literature can keep difficult histories alive. As she reminds us, places and novels tell stories, we only need to let them speak.

πŸŽ“ European Heritage Masterclass

Heritage sites often carry multiple layers of meaning. They can connect people, but they can also reflect conflict, exclusion and competing interpretations of the past.

In Lesson 4: Complex Stories in Contested Places, Prof. Dr. Hermann Parzinger, renowned archaeologist and Executive President of Europa Nostra, explores how heritage professionals can address difficult histories, contested narratives and places with complex stories through dialogue, openness and responsibility.

The Masterclass is developed as part of the Europa Nostra Heritage Agora project co-funded by Creative Europe and it was recorded at Huis van Brienen in Amsterdam, one of the historic houses cared for by Hendrick de Keyser Monumenten.
