๐ฆ Angel sharks (family Squatinidae) are unique bottom-dwelling sharks with broad, flat bodies and wide pectoral fins that give them a superficial resemblance to rays or skates.
Despite this appearance, they are true sharks. As master ambush predators, they bury themselves in the sand to surprise passing prey.
๐ The Mediterranean Sea is home to three critically endangered species of angel shark: the Angelshark (Squatina squatina), Sawback angelshark (Squatina aculeata), and Smoothback angelshark (Squatina oculata).
The main threats to Mediterranean Angel Sharks are:
1. Bycatch and Overfishing - Commercial fishing is the most significant threat to angel sharks in the Mediterranean
2. Habitat Degradation - Angel sharks rely heavily on shallow, coastal, and benthic (seafloor) habitats to survive, which puts them in direct conflict with human development
3. Human Disturbance - Because they inhabit shallow coastal waters, human recreational activities create secondary, yet significant, threat
โ Because of their slow growth, late maturity, and low reproductive rates coupled with massive overfishing, home destruction and regular human disturbances, these once-abundant coastal sharks have suffered drastic population declines and are now classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red.
Obviously, the current laws that are meant to protect them are not really working.
๐ Thatโs why we need a new paradigm shift - new law that respects the inherent rights of all the beings of the Mediterranean to life, health, home.
