Hardly any artist exposes dominant modes of thinking with as much precision and wit as Joana Tischkau. Together with choreographer Jeremy Nedd and performance artist Sophie Yukiko, Tischkau now creates a full-length dance work for the Cuban Malpaso Dance Company, exploring authenticity and exoticization.
Drawing on the iconic Tropicana r***e theater, founded in Havana in the 1930s, Tischkau, Nedd and Yukiko expose how tourism and cultural exploitation can become a trap. With pointed satire they interrogate Eurocentric perspectives and draw on trap music, a hip-hop subgenre that emerged in the 1990s in Black communities in Atlanta and shifts between racist stereotypes and lived realities.

Kaum eine Künstlerin entlarvt so präzise und humorvoll vorherrschende Denkmuster wie Joana Tischkau. Gemeinsam mit dem Choreografen Jeremy Nedd und Performancekünstlerin Sophie Yukiko entwirft Tischkau nun einen großen Tanzabend über Authentizität und Exotisierung für die kubanische Malpaso Dance Company.
Ausgehend vom ikonischen Revue-Theater Tropicana, das in den 1930ern in Havanna gegründet wurde, zeigen Tischkau, Nedd und Yukiko, wie Tourismus und kulturelle Ausbeutung zur Falle (englisch: trap) werden können, entlarven satirisch zugespitzt eurozentristische Blickweisen, und benutzen mit Trap-Musik ein Hip-Hop-Subgenre, das in den 90ern in den Schwarzen Communitys Atlantas entstand und sich zwischen rassistischen Stereotypen und kultureller Realität bewegt.
