Youth Meeting and Education Centre Sajan

Youth Meeting and Education Centre Sajan Youth Meeting and Education Centre Sajan But until the first projects took place there was a long way to go. How to create an Youth Meeting and Education Centre?

Welcome to the Youth Meeting and Education Centre Sajan (YMECS)

In summer 2009 a small group of engaged people from Serbia and Germany found this lovely place close to the city of Kikinda and decided to make their dream come true: a place for young people from Vojvodina, Serbia, Europe and the World to meet, to discuss, to discover and to learn in a free and open environment. How to reconstruct

a place which was used nearly 80 years as a farm? We took small steps... first the main house as a place to meet and to sleep, following the summer kitchen for having coffee and discussions, the first workshop room close to the summer kitchen, new toilets, the new seminar room in the former barns.... but there are many steps to follow. In future we will also offer a varied programme of activities for political, cultural, international and intercultural education. Like us, join us and visit us! Learning through encounter

The Vojvodina as a colorful region with its historical and contemporary references, is a place one can learn from and is a central aspect of all our educational activities. We see ourselves as a place in which young people and adults from different regions and countries can come together to learn with one another and from one another. Meet and learn in a relaxed environment

You are organising a seminar, meeting, exchange, training or any other type of gathering or educational event? Then the Youth Meeting and Education Centre Sajan (YMECS) is the right place for you. You want a real intercultural experience for you and your participants? Then experience living and learning in the Youth Meeting and Education Centre Sajan (YMECS). A few beds are available on the area of the Centre until we build our big guest house, for bigger groups we are cooperating successfully with selected families in the village around the Centre which are offering their rooms, appartments or even single houses to you. Until we will have our own cafeteria the food is provided by a well-known restaurant in Kikinda delivering their food to us on a daily basis, ensuring breakfast, lunch and dinner with fresh and healthy food, offering Serbian and international cuisine as well as vegan and vegetarian food. For all educational activities two seminar rooms (30 qm and 50 qm) are available – a seminar room with 90 qm will be constructed soon! Further the garden of the Centre with more than 500 qm can be used for your outdoor activities. Due to the cooperation with the community a more than 100 qm seminar room can be additionally used in Cultural Centre of the village close to the Youth Meeting and Education Centre Sajan (YMECS)

Where are we? Sajan is close to the beautiful town of Kikinda in the Vojvodina, easily reachable via Belgrade, Novi Sad and Zrenjanin. https://www.google.de/maps/place/Sajan/@45.8443526,20.300138,12z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x4744c4a1543517a3:0x9a4a75f851ac4e68

URGENT CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS FROM SERBIA

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The Center for Intercultural Dialogue (CID) through the project BalCAN Change which is going to implemented from July 2018 to February 2019. The whole project will focus on development of action plans on local level in 4 communities, development of an online course, production of stories, surveys and articles in different languages which will go on www.multikulti.mk, video compilation depicting the caravan and impressions of the participants from the whole process, including learning moments, challenges they have faced and beautiful stories of working together.

CID together with the partners from Kosovo*, Montenegro and Serbia will select a group of 8 participants from each country, from 18 to 25 years old. The first part of the project is going to be the Peace Academy happening in Ohrid from 19th-23rd September. Afterwards we are going to have online courses as well as the Implementation of advocacy campaigns from each country. In January we will organize The caravan which will start in Belgrade and will take all the group to each city, ending in Podgorica. This project will promote and try to build the capacity of young people to advocate for peace through cultural/artistic activities as well as increase the mobility of youth (especially from marginalized communities) in the Balkan region.

ABOUT THE PEACE ACADEMY:

The Academy will last for 5 days and will prepare the 32 participants for organising and implementing an advocacy campaign which will have clear objectives and a plan for action. The idea is to have advocacy campaigns that will have an element of public display (can be an exhibition, a theatrical performance, flashmob, etc.), which can be incorporated in the Caravan 4 Peace and displayed in every city, but the campaign does not have to be limited to this format. The groups will have time in the program

The methodology of the training will rely on the non- formal education principles: group discussions, role plays, daily evaluations, smaller/bigger/mixed group activities, using creativity and arts for expression. Every partner will come with the expertise of their organization to share new tools on how to ensure intercultural dialogue. The practical aspect of the Academy will be the planning of the advocacy campaigns, so that the youngsters already have a starting point for when they go back to plan their advocacy campaign during the Academy, so that they can get feedback from facilitators and other participants.

Another step to go: International Training Course „BE THE KEY – Empowering European Youth Workers through Conflict Management Skills“, 05.05.-13.05.2014, Sajan, Serbia

He drew a circle that shut me out. Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout. But love and I had the wit to win. We drew a circle that took him in (Edwin Markham, American poet).

Today‘s world is challenging for young people: different ways of living, loving, believing – as such – being often trigger misunderstanding and exclusion. Feelings of frustration and disillusion often effect young people’s relationship to others contributing to conflicts not just within the young person themselves but also to friends, relatives and co-workers. Youth workers play an important role in supporting young people in coping with personal, social and intercultural conflicts.

Therefore, CGE Erfurt e.V. invited 22 participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Portugal, Serbia and Spain to the training course „BE THE KEY: Empowering European Youth Workers through Conflict Management Skills“. The TC took place from May 5th to 13th 2014 at the Youth Meeting and Education Centrein Sajan, Serbia. During the project participants were given the possibility to develop their conflict management competences. These developed competences will support them in facilitating constructive learning outcomes and in stimulating reflective perspectives among their target group.

The learning process of the participants was facilitated by two experienced and supportive trainers, Marija Farmer (Serbia) and Sylvia Schmidt (Kosovo/Germany). They introduced participants to different concepts of conflict as framed by established academics (John Burton, Johan Galtung and Friedrich Glasl) as well as to concepts of parallel truths, conflict escalation and anti-bias. Participants recognized the importance to differentiate between needs and positions when in conflict and to reflect on conflicts from the perspective of needs. By means of different non-formal methods such as role plays, song writing and pantomime it became more and more apparent that conflict is a not only a time of danger but also a time of opportunity and as such fun.

During the TC participants obtained the chance to develop their own skills and knowledge on tools, strategies and methods in conflict management. Important competences of „Europe’s next top conflict manager“ were introduced and directly put into practice. Especially the session on assertiveness had a great impact on participants’ learning process during the week and they kept on practicing „to stand up for their personal rights and expressing their thoughts, feelings and beliefs in a direct and honest way which does not violate another’s persons rights“.

Many of the participants als felt deeply connected to „the journey through the dark forest“ or to put it into other words „I have no idea what is going on and that is o.k.“ As such, tolerance to ambiguity emerged as another crucial competence during the TC. Participants started to appreciate this journey as adventurous, creative and as teaching themselves another way of personal power and security.

During the TC the participants had the possibility to exchange their experiences and good practices on conflict management, being it during different workshops or during the NGO Cocktail Evening that gave each participant the platform to present their organization. Another evening participants were invited to the European Art Night giving each of us a taste of our European culture – by listening (Macedonian drum’n’bass, Anomalia Nativa ft. Kacar „Premnogu Drsko“), tasting (Italian chocolate), seeing (German artists, Herkut and
Peter Lenk), feeling (Portugese poem, Natália Correia „Queixa das lamas jovens censuradas“) or smelling (Bosnian Rakia).

In the end participants were given the chance to experience the power of creativity and put their developed competences into practice by means of image theater and forum theater to be used eventually within their own group. We watched scenes of conflicts in youth organisation, personal conflicts of going through the dark forest as well as social and structural conflicts. In the end all of us realized that we should consider conflict as positively challenging and changing … or to put it in the words of impro wisdom:

say „yes“ – take every offer
don’t prepare
just show up
start anywhere
be average
pay attention
face the facts
stay on the course
wake up to the gifts
make mistakes, please
act now
take care of each other
enjoy the ride

In the following weeks an e-booklet on the TC will be published.
