This land is infused with deep canyons and gorges, high mountains area with many endemic species and many caves. It's not a coincidence that in the area of 88,361 km2 are located 39% of vascular flora of Europe, 51% of the fish fauna, fauna, 49% of amphibians and reptiles, 74% of the bird fauna and 67% of the mammal fauna of the whole European continent. Prožeta dubokim kanjonima i klisurama, u kojima su spas našle brojne endemične vrste, zavetrine visokih planinskih masiva i duboke pećine stvorili su uslove da ovi krajevi budu poslednja oaza za mnoge vrste. Sve ovo je preduslovilo da priroda ovde bude tako izdašna i raznovrsna, tako da nije slucajnost da se na prostoru od 88,361 km2 nalazi 39 % vaskularne flore Evrope, 51 % faune riba, 49 % faune vodozemaca i gmizavaca, 74 % faune ptica i 67 % faune sisara celog evropskog kontinenta.
