Mountain and high mountain areas of Serbia, as a part of Balkan Peninsula, represent one out of six biodiversity centers of Europe. The importance of these fragile systems and their sensitivity to current changes has been more and more evident. This is especially true for freshwater habitats and organisms living there, situated in the most threatened ecosystems - boreal forests, alpine m
eadows and pastures. With this page we will try to share our experiences and field work, hoping to raise awareness about importance and benefits of these areas. Our current research is on preserving high mountain aquatic habitats of Serbia impacted by climate change. The first two areas that we will cover are Lake Vlasina and mountain Stara Planina. This project is funded by The Rufford Foundation(http://www.rufford.org/). You can read more about the project here: http://www.rufford.org/projects/maja_ilic
