The association Dea Dia is a non-profit, non-governmental and youth-led organisation that works towards the advancement of education (formal and non-formal), promotion and protection of human and women’s rights, peace-building, and empowerment of young people to be active changemakers in their respective communities. Members of the Dea Dia are passionate about youth work, education and school impr
ovement, particularly in the development of democratic schools, educational policies, and the application of innovative teaching and learning techniques which would help young people to be aware and engaged in their process of learning. We also work with teachers in our schools towards the prevention and transformation of the pedagogical and evaluative discriminating practices in schools in order to reduce of xenophobia, GBV and homophobia. Because we believe that we will reduce high levels of xenophobia (youth violence and discrimination) and youth apathy and disinterest in politics in our country by enabling young people to travel and meet people from different countries, we promote the Erasmus + programme and include young people in the creation, development and implementation of international projects, supported by the Erasmus +. We empower them to be independent actors of change and to forge partnerships with the other international and national organisations. Afterwards, we also help them to develop their own projects while realising their ideas. Our main activities comprise Erasmus + international and national projects implemented with the means of workshops, seminars and training. The aim of our projects is to educate and empower young people, youth workers, teachers, human security officials, police, etc. on issues such as active citizenship, social justice, human rights, gender equality, intercultural communication, peace-building and conflict prevention, etc. Our work with schools (primary, secondary and tertiary education), where we hold workshops on active participation, human rights, social justice and intercultural education in schools, is dedicated towards the empowerment of students to be creative thinkers rather than obedient citizens, offering them knowledge in order to foster their intellectual autonomy and emancipation. Dea Dia comprises teachers and education researchers among its members, who work mostly for the change of the obsolete, discriminatory, gender-biased teaching materials and methodology practices in schools. Our members also advocate for functional instead of repetitive knowledge because of the poor PISA test results of Serbian students. Dea Dia sees the education as a tool for democracy and the intercultural education in schools as a tool for promotion of peace, active citizenship, tolerance, global citizenship, and intercultural dialogue. Because Dea Dia promotes the idea that young people should be involved in politics and that they are important components in peace-building and initiators of social changes, we encourage the development of the civil society by strengthening the personal autonomy of the individuals, especially women's, children's and young people's. Moreover, Dea Dia aims to improve the relations between the sexes/genders through sensitisation of the values of non-violence and sex/gender equality and represent, advocate, empower and raise awareness of the marginalised and vulnerable groups. We are committed to producing and continually re-creating non-discriminating, healthy, and productive communities, the community of collaboration and compassion, where the wishes, thoughts and attitudes of young people are heard and respected, and they are included in decision-making processes and empowered to become active citizens and critical thinkers who challenge unfair discrimination and work towards the positive change in their respective communities. Dea Dia is situated in Kovačica, Serbia which is a multicultural municipality where 5 different ethnic communities (Slovak, Serbian, Roma, Hungarian, and Romanian) live together hence we strive to maintain the culture of multiculturalism and peace. The association respects ethics of diversity and works with everyone, regardless of nationality, political beliefs, religion, race, sexual orientation, mental or physical ability, or any other difference.
