Just over a week after the EuroClio - European Association of History Educators Annual Conference “History and Hope: Learning for Change”, hosted at the European Parliament in Brussels, we are still reflecting on the inspiring exchanges that brought together more than 250 educators, historians, and cultural practitioners from across Europe and beyond.

Representatives of Edukacija za 21 vek contributed to the programme through the workshop “Whose Memory Counts? Monuments, Controversy and Under-Representation”, exploring how monuments and underrepresented communities shape public memory through dialogue and creative tasks.

🔹 I ove godine učestvujemo na seminaru o nastavi istorije u jugoistočnoj Evropi kao predavači i gosti The Ratiu Forum u Rumuniji.
📢 Ovogodišnji seminar će se održati od 15. do 17. maja 2026. godine u Turdi, Rumunija. Tema radionice je „Shapeshifting Nation States: Moving Borders, Moving Peoples“, a program će kroz predavanja i diskusije sa uglednim istoričarima i stručnjacima istraživati kako se predaje mogu istorija u školama i da li može da doprinese boljem razumevanju savremenih debata o granicama, migracijama i nacionalnom identitetu.

Radionica je namenjena profesorima istorije u srednjim školama i studentima istorije iz Rumunije, Moldavije i Srbije koji žele da kritički promišljaju složene istorijske teme i unaprede svoje nastavne i analitičke veštine.

Applications Open: 2026 Teaching of Difficult Histories Workshop

How can history and the way we teach it help us better understand today’s debates about borders, migration, and national identity?

We have opened applications for the Teaching of Difficult Histories Workshop, taking place 15-17 May 2026 at the Ratiu Centre in Turda, Romania.

Coordinated by John Lotherington (21st Century Trust), the workshop will explore the theme “Shapeshifting Nation States: Moving Borders, Moving Peoples” through expert lectures and discussion sessions with leading historians and practitioners.

Naš tim je u okviru EuroClio - European Association of History Educators projekta učestvovao u izradi video tutorijala edukativnog serijala namenjenog nastavnicima za rad sa osetljivim i složenim temama iz prošlosti.

Century team participated in the development of the Monument(al) Challenges video tutorials, led by EuroClio - European Association of History Educators This educational series is designed to support teachers in addressing sensitive, complex, and contested topics from the past.

🎥 Video Tutorial: This video tutorial demonstrates how contested monuments can be used to teach multiperspectivity.

Using the example of the RTS building, the tutorial demonstrates how memorials can help students understand different perspectives, contested narratives, and questions of historical responsibility.

As the Monument(al) Challenges project concludes, we celebrated one of its final events: the National Workshop for Serbian teachers at the IV Belgrade History Education Symposium. The project explored how teachers can engage students with contested monuments and historical legacies in Europe’s increasingly diverse classrooms.

IV beogradski simpozijum o nastavi istorije 2025. u Beogradu otvoren je obraćanjima ambasadora Francuske, Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva, Nemačke, Holandije, i Švajcarske, uz prisustvo šefa Kancelarije Saveta Evrope u Beogradu.

Njihove poruke istakle su zajedničku posvećenost sveobuhvatnim, kritičkim i multiperspektivnim pristupima u nastavi istorije širom Evrope.

Florans Ferari, ambasadorka Francuske u Srbiji, pozdravila je učesnike Simpozijuma, ističući kontinuiranu podršku Francuske u organizaciji od njegovog osnivanja 2022. godine.

Edvard Ferguson, ambasador Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva u Srbiji, istakao je značaj istorije na Zapadnom Balkanu, pominjući godišnjice kao što su Jasenovac, Srebrenica, Operacija Oluja i Dejtonski mirovni sporazum, i naglasio da je nužan prekid ciklusa sukoba kako bi se izgradila stabilna i prosperitetna regija.

Anke Konrad, ambasadorka Nemačke u Srbiji, rekla je da nastava istorije može da podstakne pomirenje i regionalnu saradnju, uzimajući u obzir iskustvo Nemačke u prevazilaženju sukoba iz prošlosti, posebno kroz francusko-nemački i poljsko-nemački proces pomirenja.

Martijn Elgersma, ambasador Holandije u Srbiji, istakao je dugogodišnju posvećenost Holandije unapređivanju kritičkog mišljenja i inovativnih pristupa u nastavi istorije, naglašavajući ulogu organizacije u podsticanju ovakvih vidova nastave širom Evrope.

Janoš Babiti, šef Kancelarije Saveta Evrope u Beogradu, istakao je da su, uprkos brojnim izazovima, upravo izuzetna otpornost i nepokolebljiva posvećenost svih partnera omogućile realizaciju ovogodišnjeg simpozijuma.

An Lugon-Mulen, ambasadorka Švajcarske u Srbiji i Crnoj Gori, istakla je kontinuiranu podršku Švajcarske Simpozijumu, od njegovog osnivanja, naglašavajući ključnu ulogu dijaloga, sveobuhvatnog pristupa i oblikovanja vrednosti kroz nastavu istorije.

On October 30–31, Belgrade hosted the Fourth Belgrade Symposium on History Education: “Rethinking History and Civic Education for a Shared Future”, marking 30 years since the Dayton Peace Agreement.

The event brought together teachers, university professors, researchers, and civil society representatives from Serbia, the region, and Europe, creating an important space for exchanging ideas and reflecting critically on history education, democratization, confronting the past, and building peace in post-conflict societies.

Četvrti beogradski simpozijum o nastavi istorije održan je 30. i 31. oktobra, neposredno pre komemorativnog skupa u Novom Sadu, u kontekstu promišljanja i preispitivanja nastave istorije. Taj vremenski i simbolički kontekst dodatno je podsetio učesnike na važnost kritičkog mišljenja i empatije u nastavi istorije i na jačanje demokratskih procesa u društvu.

Tokom dvodnevnog programa, istoričari, nastavnici, diplomate i predstavnici civilnog društva iz Srbije i Evrope razgovarali su o tome kako nastava istorije može doprineti razumevanju, dijalogu i kritičkom sagledavanju prošlosti.

Kroz panele i radionice održane u Institut français de Serbie / Francuski institut u Srbiji i Goethe-Institut Belgrad i na Filozofskom fakultetu u Beogradu, otvorene su teme o tome šta učenici uče iz udžbenika istorije, ulozi NVO u neformalnom obrazovanju mladih i sagledavanju kontroverznog istorijskog nasleđa..........................................

The Fourth Belgrade Symposium on History Education was held on October 30 and 31, just before the commemoration in Novi Sad, in the context of reflecting on and rethinking history education. This temporal and symbolic context further reminded participants of the importance of critical thinking and empathy in history teaching and of strengthening democratic processes in society.

Over the two-day program, historians, teachers, diplomats, and civil society representatives from Serbia and across Europe discussed how history education can foster understanding, dialogue, and a shared future.

Through panels and workshops at the Institut français de Serbie / Francuski institut u Srbiji and Goethe-Institut Belgrad and the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, participants explored what students learn about war, peace, and post-conflict realities, the role of NGOs in informal youth education, and engaging with contested histories and heritage.
