Gradska Gerila / City-Guerilla Gradska Gerila Beograd City-Guerilla

Supported by the Goethe-Institut, the idea for initiating the Goethe-Guerilla Project was conceived in Belgrade in 2010.

A group of young and creative people with different educational backgrounds and different interests tries to draw attention of the public to some problems troubling inhabitants of the city by initiating various projects. In the past four consecutive years, four generations of Goethe-Guerilla members have managed to leave a significant trace in the cultural life of Belgrade and Savamala through the

ir creative research and many socially engaged projects and actions. They have established a valuable network of communication and cooperation with various young and talented individuals and groups, as well as with the residents of Savamala, which has been the main contemplative frame of their work in the past two years. Originally created as a part of an Institution, Goethe-Guerilla has become a well-known platform for individuals to express their creativity and enthusiasm in dealing with inconsistencies, trying to create a better environment for themselves and other citizens. Being a member of the “Guerilla” group has become a strong connection point, generator of creative ideas and a synonym for activism, teamwork, creativity and open-minded approach. Goethe-Guerilla becomes City-Guerilla

Transforming the Goethe-Guerilla into a “City-Guerilla” is the next logical step in developing this powerful platform. After years of improving the project methodology and establishing the idea of uniting young creative minds in “fighting” against indifference, negligence, ignorance and alienation, the Guerilla has come to a point when it already gathers a significant number of individuals, former and current members, who are more than willing to devote their time and energy in making the Guerilla Project even more open to new people and possibilities. Adhering to the same principles, but as a completely open and independent platform, City-Guerilla has a new perspective and a chance to attract a wider audience. Urban Incubator

Currently, the City-Guerilla operates as an informal group, parallel to the fifth generation of Goethe-Guerilla, which continues to develop their own ideas supported by the Goethe-Institute as the previous generations did. Goethe-Guerilla members can participate in these workshops and projects conducted by the City-Guerilla and eventually become a part of City-Guerilla themselves. By the end of 2014, City-Guerilla will work on several projects, actions and workshops in Savamala with the support of the Urban Incubator Association. Projects

Audio Walk: Savamala is an audio guide which introduces participants to Savamala in an unusual way. The narrator is an elderly resident who retells the history of Savamala through the memories of his childhood, comparing, at the same time, the Savamala of the past with that of the present, and inviting the listener to think about its future. Mobile Libraries Workshop: The Open Library is a meeting point where people exchange books and ideas, and ideas through books. It is free and open for everyone to use, as long as they respect one simple rule: bring a book and take one, or take one and return it after reading. The result of this workshop will be small, mobile installations for storing books, which will be placed in several popular places in Savamala. ParMinutaArhitekture (A Few Minutes of Architecture) Web Platform is a simple website with audio content. Narrators of those audio interviews are experts in the field of architecture, urban planning and similar fields, as well as architecture students and residents of Savamala. Each audio is limited to just a few minutes (par minuta), so that a website visitor has a whole series of very short but very effective educational units available. The platform is designed for open discussion, networking and informal education, gathering all interested contributors of the future development of Savamala and Belgrade online and live. Savamala Map Jewelry Project uses a map of Savamala as an inspirational point to design unique jewelry and present it as a souvenir of Savamala. While discussing their memories related to Savamala’s every-day life, residents of Savamala who participate in the workshop will mark interesting places, streets and neighborhoods in Savamala, which the author will convert into a sculptural work of art.

Our Story

City Guerilla is a creative laboratory which rests on the following principles: self-organized youth, their creative association, peer education and alternative education, exchanging a wide range of skills, knowledge and ideas. These young people have different educational backgrounds, interests, talents, abilities, life experience and attitudes. The synergy of these versatile factors forms specific creative spaces for applying various ideas in the fields of art and social activism with an aim to inspire young people to take an active part in shaping their own urban environment and strengthen civil society.

City Guerilla originates from a project developed by the Goethe-Institut entitled Goethe-Guerilla, which started in 2010 with the aim to connect with young people. During seven years of the project (both as Goethe and City Guerilla), more than 150 young people from Belgrade and the region have been given an opportunity to realize their ideas and gain experience in self-organization process by implementing projects on the topic they have chosen themselves: the Right to the City – improving our own urban environment.

From 2010 until today there have been many exhibitions, installations, workshops (in collaboration with local and international artists), debates, lectures, concerts, participative and environmental public space interventions, research projects, regional and international events and workshops, including two international meetings supported by the European Union program entitled “Youth in Action”. Within the framework of the international project of the Goethe-Institut "ACTOPOLIS. The Art of Action", City Guerilla was one of the 14 participants of the Belgrade edition of Actopolis called "Formally Informal" curated by Mirjana Boba Stojadinović.

Once a controversial name, Goethe-Guerilla (Goethe = an institution, Guerilla = freedom of action), which strongly depicts the singularity of this symbiosis during the organic process of self-organization of a group of young people on their way to independence under the roof of a cultural institution, has in the meantime, among young people, become a synonym for team work, creativity, open access, exchange of knowledge and ideas in the fields of art and social activism both on local and international levels. Since 2012 members of Goethe-Guerilla have been focused on the run-down neighborhood of Savamala. They have been monitoring, investigating and documenting its dramatic architectural transformation and have either taken an active part in it or opposed it through their projects and actions. In March 2013 the Goethe-Insititut officially launches the project "Urban Incubator: Belgrade" in Savamala. Soon after, Goethe-Guerilla joines other local and international projects from the previous generations (2010-2014), decides to become independent founding an association named City Guerilla, which continues its activities supported the Goethe-Institut, now as a partner.
