🤝🏛 GLAMMONS OPEN DAY 🤝🏛

Nova Iskra is organizing an Open Doors dedicated to presenting the main results of the GLAMMONS project!

Through research, collaborations, and practical examples, we have explored how cultural institutions can become open, participatory, and sustainable spaces. At this event, we will share key insights from the project and discuss what it means for culture to be a common good.

A special focus will be on the handbook developed within GLAMMONS. During one hour, we will go through five thematic areas – from participatory management and financial resilience, to collaborative cultural production, digital tools, and new approaches to evaluation and impact measurement.

This Open Day is an opportunity not only to present the results but also to create a space for exchange with cultural workers, institutions, and communities who believe that culture belongs to everyone.

We wrapped up the GLAMMONS Final Conference at Romantso in Athens!

Two inspiring days full of learning, exchange, reflection — and above all, learning together.

Under the theme “Commons & commoning in & for cultural production”, we gathered researchers, cultural practitioners, and policy makers to explore:

👉 Networks & intercommoning
👉 Policies that enable cultural commons
👉 Infrastructures that sustain them
👉 Values & co-creation practices
👉 Digital commons & accessibility

💬 Day 1 opened with powerful reflections on networks, policies, infrastructures, and values, and ended with a beautiful dinner at Salero where the conversations continued late into the night.

💬 Day 2 focused on management & participatory practices, heritage and memory, and closed with a deep dive into digital commons: from AI and digitisation to access and open data.

From Thessaloniki’s culinary commons to post-conflict heritage in Kosovo, from cooperative infrastructures to the future of digital culture: The stories and perspectives shared were as diverse as they were inspiring!

A heartfelt thank you to all speakers, moderators, and participants for their contributions, and to our partners who made this possible.

🎙 Listen now to our 2nd episode of the GLAMMONS Podcast! 🎙

In our podcast, we explore how galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs) can transform into genuine spaces of the commons. Now you can listen to inspiring stories from our case studies.

🎧 In our second episode, Mina Dragouni and Katerina Konstantinou explore the layered history and evolving heritage of Spinalonga, a small islet off Crete once used as a l***r colony. Through archival insights, fieldwork, and public memory, they unpack how the island’s difficult past became a national monument and tourist hotspot. The conversation addresses the tensions between tourism, preservation, and local agency, asking: Can heritage become a shared resource? And what does “commoning” a site like Spinalonga really mean?

Our podcast is out now!

GLAMMONS – Towards the GLAMs of the Commons explores how galleries, libraries, archives & museums can become true spaces of the commons and now you can listen to exciting examples from our case studies!

In our first episode, we dive into the inspiring case of Cultural Center Magacin in Belgrade through an interview with Olja Nikolić Kia. Together, we explore how Magacin challenges traditional management by embracing collaborative governance and co-leadership. As a vibrant cultural Commons, Magacin is collectively run by its users – artists, activists, and community members – who decide together how to shape and sustain the space. Tune in to hear firsthand how this decentralized model fosters creativity, inclusivity, and shared responsibility in the heart of Serbia’s cultural scene!

New insights on the future of cultural governance!

On June 27th, Dr. Janet Merkel hosted a workshop at TU Berlin, bringing together cultural practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to discuss how commons-based governance can shape the future of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM).

The event focused on:
✨ Rethinking public infrastructure, funding, and legal frameworks to support community-led cultural initiatives.
✨ The importance of municipal-level policies and the role of city governments in fostering commons-based cultural practices.
✨ Alignment with European priorities like diversity, participation, and civic engagement.

Key takeaways:
⚖️ Addressing challenges such as legal recognition, funding access, and long-term support for grassroots initiatives.
🌍 Building more inclusive, collaborative cultural spaces that represent diverse communities.

Stay tuned for the upcoming GLAMMONS policy briefs, coming in autumn 2025!

A week left for sending us your contributions for the final conference of GLAMMONS!

📌 Call for contribution
Deadline for abstracts submission 30 June 2025.

✅ Participate to the Conference: "Commons and commoning in/for cultural production", 4-5 September 2025, in Athens, Greece

The conference marks the end of the GLAMMONS project, which aimed to explore practices (concerning management, financial sustainability and participation) that have emerged around small-scale, community-led GLAMS (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) through the theoretical lens of the commons. The project aimed to inspire commoning practices around GLAMs and beyond, and bring to the fore best practices that can respond to challenges that commons-oriented cultural organisations face.

We welcome contributions that build on empirical and/or theoretical approaches and we are particularly interested in critical contributions about the development of commons in cultural organisations from different academic perspectives, such as cultural studies, cultural economics, urban and cultural geography, sociology, management studies, labour studies, political sciences etc. We also welcome contributions from practitioners that would like to showcase their commons-oriented cultural organisations and discuss their challenges and practices.

Tomorrow, Lyudmila Petrova (Creare NL) will be presenting at Philea - Philanthropy European Association webinar on "The Heart of Culture: Measuring Value Beyond Statistics".

Why do arts and culture matter? With the artistic and cultural fields coming under increasing scrutiny comes the need to spell out and justify the value of arts and culture. The 2024 State of Culture report demonstrates how the “intrinsic” value remains challenging to articulate in policy terms yet the instrumentalisation of culture, recognised as a driver for non-cultural issues, is a major growing trend across European and national policies.

“As cultural policy is tuned to serve multiple external goals, cultural activities and practices have come under the quantitative measurement” - State of Culture. Artists and cultural institutions are increasingly pressured by funders to demonstrate their achievements at the conclusion of a project, which fails to capture the long-term effects of arts and culture.

How is philanthropy tackling the challenge of recognising the value of arts and culture beyond quantitative data? Are funders contributing to expressing art’s impact in numbers? What are the practices in terms of monitoring, evaluation and learning that foundations can implement to avoid instrumentalising the field and putting their partners in the complex position to predict and calculate the transformative effect of their work?

She will present the value-based approach methodology and its application in the GLAMMONS.
