Unsung heroes are all around us.

They are quietly taking care of their sick mothers, without a complaint, while nobody watches.

And digging ditches on the roads so that the bus can pass for everyone, for no pay, without boasting to anyone.

They are planting tired soils under the pounding sun, so that we can all eat.

Yet our society seems to so easily to raise up to hero status those with the most money, regardless of how they might obtain it.

Thank you to the millions of unsung heroes who selflessly, humbly and quietly keep our communities strong and intact.

We had the honor last week of participating in a community event with three non-profit organizations that work in the youth empowerment sector.

Various members of the community of Zapaton, a local town with a reputation for their love of fútbol, were the recipients of soccer cleats, goalie gloves, balls and uniforms donated by , .official, and
Doña Carmen, Don Noe, Iris and Juliana, leaders and members of the Zapaton indigenous community, were the local intermediaries that received and hosted the group.

They were gracious, welcoming and well organized and the event was a big success.

Upon the completion of the event, the 30 members of the visiting delegation took a tour of the region and then made their way to Charro’s, a local restaurant in San Miguel, for a delicious lunch.

Vinicio Barrientos, one of the owners of Charros, wowed the crowd when he sang some beautiful ranchero songs for the crowd made up of players, coaches and futbol fans from Colombia, the US and Costa Rica.

We’d like to send out a special thanks to Lisle, our friend and contact in Jaco for putting this wonderful and impactful event together.

We’re hoping to do a repeat next year.

MCF has been active this dry season with a number of new initiatives underway, one being the construction of a new home for a low-income family in town. Hoping that everyone is enjoying their Easter week. Thank you as always for your support.

Corporate farms have come to dominate the world’s food supply chain.

This resulted in a drop in global malnutrition for a few decades, but this takeover also led to the poisoning of our soils, water and nutriment, putting at risk our ability to feed humans in the long-run.

To add to our current food conundrum, people are eating more and more ultra processed food, leading to a significant increase in cases of cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Moreover, countries are increasingly dependent on food coming from outside of their borders.

With worldwide malnutrition on the rise again, and climate change and war making growing food ever more challenging, it’s imperative that we sanely produce our sustenance in places where and when it’s possible.

Communities have to reassert their food independence, in a time when decreasing numbers of people dedicate themselves to farming.

We have to find ways to grow healthy food while supporting those that grow it in our communities. It’s no small task, and one of the many challenges of our time.

Permaculture offers part of the solution. It teaches us to work harmoniously with the land to produce fruits, vegetables, grains and pulses without contaminating those that consume the harvests.

Start yourself down the path of action today. We all must find the courage to contribute to a better world through activism of some type. Become a part in the revolution to create a more just world through responsible farming and conscientious consumption. Demand a stop to wars, work to alleviate poverty in your community, and grow and eat local.

Here are the first greenhouse plantings at the new project Finca La Isla in Mastatal that MCF provided a grant for to increase organic vegetable production in our community! This will be a game changer for our town, providing increased access to fresh food for our local residents and visitors.

Marlon and Carol have been working tirelessly to get the new greenhouses and growing spaces up and running. Mastatal and the surrounding communities are so fortunate to have them as part of our community.

MCF helped sponsor 2 more spay and neuter clinics in the region over the past few months. Almost 100 cats and dogs were fixed with the hopes of keeping at bay the population of unwanted pets in our towns.

Large numbers of unclaimed domesticated canines and felines is a difficult challenge to deal with in rural, low-income communities such as those in our district.

Urging all pet owners to sterilize their furry friends is one way that we can stem the growth of abandoned animals.

Thanks so all of you that contributed to this worthy cause, and also to the wonderful veterinary crew that offered locals an accessible rate for these operations.

MCF has helped to maintain our town's field for over a decade now. It's one of the most important places in town, offering a safe space for the region's populace to play soccer or volleyball, run laps, or ride bikes.

On most dry afternoons, and many wet ones too, the "plaza" will be buzzing with activity.

In a town of just over 100 people, areas like this provide a critical outlet for kids and adults who might otherwise dabble in less desirable activities.

Don Dimo has been diligently cutting the grass here for many years, and we thank him as well as all of the supporters of MCF for making this important part of our community a reality.

We helped to finance the launch of a new, small, family-run vegetable and perennial staple crop farm in our region. This will help create a new model in our region for producing food responsibly for local residents while drawing carbon from the atmosphere.

As farmers in our region sell their farms due to changing social structures and competition with cheaper imported staples, Costa Rica will need to come up with strategies to maintain food security while boosting it’s agricultural sector in more regenerative ways.

The monies provided are going towards the building of a greenhouse for annual vegetable production as well as the planting of a medium sized perennial food forest of avocados, plantains, mangos, jackfruit and citrus.

We're so excited for this new initiative.

Mastate Charitable Foundation made an important donation this weekend so that 20 local families had the means to spay or castrate their pets.

A veterinarian from the Quepos region spent much of the day yesterday helping the community try to control it's dog and animal populations and to provide basic vet care to our furry friends.

Non-neutered animals result in an explosion of puppy and kitten births in our rural area, oftentimes leading to abandonment, hunger and sickness for these creatures.

Over the year MCF has done its part of help to finance these clinics as a way to encourage the humane treatment of our beloved pets.

Thanks so Gaby Garcia for organizing the clinic, Wendy from Quepos who helped with logistics, and the vet team for providing this incredibly valuable service to our community.
