Verdiazul CR Turtle conservation project, Playa Junquillal, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. We promote conservation and r How you can help:

1. VOLUNTEER!

The Junquillal turtle conservation project strives to promote conservation and repopulation of turtle species native to the Pacific coastline. The conservation project began with a focus on the Leatherback species (Baula) but now encompasses all local species including the Olive Riddley (Lora) and Black turtles (Negra). The Leatherback is the fourth largest of the living reptiles. These marine gia

nts can reach up to nine feet in length and weigh up to fiteen hundred pounds in weight (which is about the same size as a small car!). In Costa Rican culture, it is common to take eggs from sea turtle nests to sell or eat them. Sea turtle hatchlings also face the dangers of predation from stray dogs, fly larvae, sea birds, amongst other threats. Climate change is also affecting the sea turtle population by influencing the percentage of males and females that hatch every season. When sand temperatures rise above 29 degrees Celsius, a greater percentage of females will hatch. This distorts the reproductive balance of all sea turtle species. Conservation efforts are beginning to change this way of thinking. Many coastal schools now emphasize conservation classes in order to involve the next generation of Costa Ricans in the protection of sea turtles. The hope is that these children and young adults will think differently about the use of turtle eggs and will participate in the conservation of these rare, marine creatures. We need volunteers to keep this organization running and in exchange for your help we can offer you a clean, safe, host environment with MEALS INCLUDED in Junquillal. E-mail us for more information on prices and other details. This is a great opportunity to see this beautiful country and help restore the turtle population at the same time. Your duties may include patrolling the beaches at night for turtle nests and adult turtles, planting native trees, cleaning up the beach, and any other tasks required by the project.

2. DONATIONS
Since the sea turtles do not have currency to pay us for the salvation of their species, we need contributions from our human allies. Since the goal of the Junquillal turtle conservation project is to become self sustainable, donations are greatly appreciated to fund our full time staff and buy equipment. The staff live in Junquillal year round and are in charge of training volunteers and overseeing the conservation efforts.

3.COME AND SEE
We are always happy to see travellers. Come to say hi, ask some questions, see new born hatchlings or join to the night patrols with us. Take pictures, tell your friends about us, like our pages and spread the knowledge about sea turtles and how important it is to keep the sea clean.
