Ocean trash is a serious pollution problem that affects the health of people, wildlife and local economies. Trash in the water and on the shore can kill marine animals, injure swimmers and beachgoers, and ensnare boat propellers. According to Environmental Health News, plastic has been found in the stomachs of species
of whales, rays, sharks, seabirds and marine mammals causing their death.
-CSRIO Australia warned that by 2050, 99% of seabirds in the world will have ingested some type of plastic.

Workers try to clear a sea of garbage caused by intense monsoon rains in Manila, Philippines.

Floods, landslides and accidents driven by a nine-day downpour equivalent to more than a month’s worth of rain in some areas have killed at least 16 people in the region, rescuers said.

💙 Thank you, Blue Spirit Costa Rica!

Since 2021, you’ve stood beside us as part of our Friends of the Ocean program — building a station to collect and upcycle plastics, and proving that real change starts locally and ripples globally.

You set an example for our whole community. We’re so proud of your work and excited to keep growing this partnership.

Here’s to thinking local, acting global. 🌊

Sea turtles have been swimming on this planet for 100 million years. They navigate by the earth’s magnetic field. They return to the exact beach where they were born to lay their own eggs. They have outlasted dinosaurs.Right now, they are endangered, not because of something dramatic, but because of plastic. The ordinary debris of human life, washing into their world. Tortuga Libre teaches children in Costa Rica to know this, and to care. 1500 students have already learned.
$5 a month, one time or every month, keeps that going. Educate one child. Link in bio. Happy World Sea Turtle Day. May they keep swimming. 🐢

World Oceans Day reminds us that protecting the ocean is not only about today.

It is also about educating the next generation.

Through Tortuga Libre x 5MBCU, your $5 monthly donation can help bring environmental education books to children in Costa Rica, inspiring them to care for turtles, beaches, and the ocean they will inherit.

Small monthly actions can create lifelong impact.

Donate $5/month and help us bring ocean education into the classroom.

A message from Costa Rica to the world.

Today is World Ocean Day. And we need you.

This small country is one of the greatest turtle sanctuaries on Earth:

🌊 Tortuguero — the largest green turtle rookery in the entire Western Hemisphere.
🌊 Ostional — the second largest olive ridley arribada beach in the world, where hundreds of thousands of turtles arrive together in a single night to nest.

Costa Rica doesn't just host turtles. It protects them.

But plastic is undoing that work.
Over half of all sea turtles have already ingested plastic.
Just one piece gives a turtle a 1-in-5 chance of dying.

A clean beach is not a luxury. It is survival.

Tortuga Libre is a children's book that teaches the next generation exactly that — because the children who understand the ocean are the ones who will save it.

🐢 For $5, you put one book in one child's hands.
One story. One cleaner beach. One free turtle.

That makes you a Five Minute Hero.

"Una playa sin plástico es una Tortuga Libre."

May I have your attention, please.

This is a message from Costa Rica to the world. Today is World Ocean Day. And we need you.

We come to the beach for two hours. We enjoy it. We love it. But by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

That's not the world we want to leave behind.

For 10 years, 5 Minute Beach Cleanup has been connecting people back to nature — one beach, five minutes at a time, in 160+ countries. This month, we are going further.

Costa Rica is home to Tortuguero — the largest green turtle rookery in the Western Hemisphere — and Ostional, where hundreds of thousands of sea turtles arrive in a single night to nest. This country knows what's at stake.

Tortuga Libre is how we protect it: a children's book that turns students into changemakers, schools into allies, and communities into ocean heroes.

$5 once. Or $5 a month.
One book. One child. One free turtle.

Out of two hours at the beach — what is five minutes? What is five dollars?

Only collectively, we will change the world.

🌊 Be a Five Minute Hero. Link in bio.

Do you know what albedo is? ☀️

It is a surface’s ability to reflect sunlight, a phenomenon that plays an essential part in regulating Earth’s climate and maintaining the balance of our planet.

Today is , an opportunity to recognise how light shapes science, technology and everyday life.

Light allows nature to grow and flourish, influences our well-being and powers technologies that have transformed our societies, from optics and lasers to fibre optics, solar energy and medical imaging.

As the only UN agency with a mandate in the basic sciences, UNESCO proclaimed this International Day to highlight the importance of light and light-based technologies in advancing science, innovation and international cooperation.
