57 sloths died. Today, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office concluded that no criminal neglect occurred.

We have now reviewed the investigation, and while we recognize that OCSO was assessing this case against the specific standards established under current Florida law, we find the outcome deeply troubling. Because the evidence documented in the report speaks for itself.

The investigation includes accounts of inadequate preparation, environmental and husbandry concerns, nutritional problems, transport stress, animals arriving sick and compromised, cages that did not meet AZA recommendations, and surviving sloths arriving at the Central Florida Zoo in poor condition. Even the experts consulted by investigators did not agree on what ultimately drove the mortality event.

And yet, under the existing legal framework, investigators concluded that the evidence did not meet the threshold for criminal neglect.

Several accounts point to serious problems beginning before the animals even reached Florida, including concerns surrounding capture, conditions in source countries, nutrition, health before shipment, and international transport.

That only strengthens the case we have been making from the beginning: if U.S. regulators cannot guarantee what happens to wild sloths throughout the international supply chain, they should not be imported for commercial entertainment in the first place.

These animals were taken from the wild to generate profit. Whether anyone intended for them to die is not the only question we should be asking.

How was this allowed to happen? And if everything that happened still falls outside the threshold for criminal accountability, how urgently do our laws need to change?

The case has now been referred to the State Attorney’s Office, and our work continues.

Through the Sloth Protection Alliance, The Sloth Conservation Foundation and The Sloth Institute will continue working with policymakers and wildlife authorities to push for stronger protections, accountability, and an end to the commercial importation of wild-caught sloths.

Adopt a Tree, Restore a Home! 🌱🦥

Sloths need more than safe crossings, they need forests to cross to. Through our Tree Nursery program, we are growing and planting native trees across Costa Rica to restore the habitat sloths depend on for food, shelter, and safe passage through the canopy.

Since launching in early 2024, we have planted 935+ native trees and counting, with even more on the way.

For $25, you can adopt a tree and help rebuild the forests sloths call home. Plus, you will receive an adoption certificate for the tree you help plant! 💚

It's , so what better time to announce August's ?! And she's giving us nothing but hits: meet Sabrina Carpenter 🎤🦥

Found after falling from her mom during a beach party at Playa Matapalo, Sabrina had a rough start. Two reunion attempts didn't work out, so she came into our care, cried her little heart out, and slowly started to adjust to her new life.

And then enter Hannah Montana (and a former Sloth-of-the-Month star), her new bestie and self-appointed climbing partner. Sabrina lets her get away with everything. Big sister energy, fully unbothered, and a union that has really allowed both to grow.

Now she's thriving and extremely particular about her milk temperature (respectfully).

You can symbolically adopt Sabrina and help us keep giving her the care she deserves 💚 Learn more in the comments!

Sloth Speedway Sighting! 🦥🌿

Look who decided to try out the new commute! A mom and baby two fingered sloth were spotted crossing safely on a installed by our team in Matapalo, Costa Rica.

No busy roads. No power lines. Just a safe, leafy shortcut between the trees, exactly how a sloth crossing should be.

Moments like this are why we build these bridges. Thank you to everyone who has helped us create safe passage for sloth moms and their babies to move through their forest home without danger.

Want to help us build more speedways? Visit the link in our bio to learn how you can get involved. 💚
