Forget everything you thought you knew about the fate of green sea turtles – because something truly amazing just happened!

These majestic creatures, once symbols of vulnerability, have officially been downgraded from 'Endangered' to 'Least Concern' on the IUCN Red List. This isn't just a technical classification change; it’s the incredible outcome of a staggering 28% global population rebound! Think about that: in a world where we often hear grim environmental news, an entire species has managed to pull back from the brink. It means that decades of tireless conservation efforts – from protecting crucial nesting beaches and combating poaching to reducing fishing bycatch – are truly paying off in a monumental way. It's proof that focused human intervention can make an *outtstanding* difference for wildlife!

Isn't this the kind of news we all need more of? 💚 Drop a comment if this made your day!

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970 in response to a massive oil spill off the Pacific Coast of southern California. Twenty years later, in 1990, the environmental movement spread globally. Now, 56 years later, over 1 BILLION people participate in Earth Day activities in over 190 countries across the globe.

As we enter our 10th year as Tambor Bay Turtles, it is vital to recognize all the work that has been done on the southern Nicoya Peninsula by volunteers from all over the world. Today, and every day, there are many organizations that dedicate their time, efforts, and energy to protect the distinctly unique place we call home. From the profound arribadas in Ostional, to the magical bioluminescent bays in Paquera, the biological corridor we share space with is truly special...and deserves to be protected.

We would like to recognize and thank these incredible organizations that help make our tiny piece of the globe so amazing:

Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve
Curu Wildlife Refuge

Wait, what? That's not a baby sea turtle!!

On a recent trip north to Pittsburgh, our Director Nicole was enjoying a nice evening watching her friend play guitar at a creekside brewpub. Suddenly, she heard him call her name over the microphone--asking her to come up to the stage area?!?!

As she approached, he pointed to the ground and said, "You know what to do with that, right?!"

Suddenly, she saw this tiny little guy scurrying across the floor! She quickly scooped him up and took him as far away from the light as possible, setting him among the plants that lined the creek. He was much smaller than the Lora hatchlings we see, caked with mud from his ground nest, with sharp little claws and a long pointy tail.

Can anyone guess what kind of turtle it was??

(Note: We understand that it would have been better to have gloves on to rescue this little guy--but sometimes you have to make a quick judgement call and do what you think is best. We're just happy to know this little guy made it safe to the water!)

Floating plastic bags drift with currents and mimic the movement and appearance of jellyfish, triggering sea turtles' predatory instincts. Research indicates that sea turtles consume plastic at alarming rates, with some studies showing they ingest plastic 62% of the time they encounter it while hunting for food. Unlike jellyfish, which digest easily, plastic creates physical obstructions that the turtles cannot regurgitate, often resulting in a slow, painful death.
