A Tribe Called Kids

A Tribe Called Kids Our vision is that every child has the right to fulfill his or hers fullest potential in a safe and inspiring environment.

A Tribe Called Kids is a humanitarian association based in Denmark but operating in rural areas of Talamanca, Costa Rica. The goal of the project is to strengthen children's social, emotional and academic skills through English lessons, interdisciplinary subjects such as theater, sports, art and organic culture. By incorporating our after school center in Puerto Viejo de Limon and our mobile class

es which aims to improve public schools in rural areas we believe children will receive more job opportunities, more stimulation to stay in school and greater ability to face the many challenges of our ever changing, rapidly advancing world.

We spent last weekend hiking to Alto Coen in the mountains of Talamanca. It was a beautiful walk through the pure and intense jungle. The idea behind the trip was to go back to see the new bridge that we together with the local non-profit Association ATEC had donated to the community of Alto Coen in January. The locals had changed the cables and the anchor with a new stronger and more solid fundament in order to secure the kids a safe and short way to school. It was amazing to experience the gratefulness of the community and we were treated like brothers and sisters by their warm hearts.

Tuesday we went to Gandoca to participate in a festival of art arranged by the teachers and the students of the school and the kindergarten. It was an amazing and very emotional day with dancing, singing, paint exhibitioning, poetry and short stories from the adorable kids.

Thank you so much for all your support!

Friday we had a super day in Gandoca with the lovely kids and in the afternoon we spent some great hours in the garden of the Rec Center, where Paola Pascucci from Casa de la Cultura had arranged a “find the plant” treasure hunt for the kids with a nice price for everyone.

The kids learned about the different plants in the garden and showed a lot of interest in the explanation from Jonathan Badilla of the benefits of each plant and how to make them thrive.

Thanks to our beloved Sensei of agriculture, Jonathan Badilla Villalobos, and to Paola Pascucci for the wonderful initiative.

Hello you beautiful people! Last Friday we started our educational program in the public school of Gandoca and we must say that we are very happy and overwhelmed after experiencing the response from the kids. They were super motivated and showed great interest in both the art, English and physical education classes.
The kids made some wonderful drawings which we obviously want to share with you! We are going to use the drawings as the frontpage for their own personal notebook in which the kids are going to write, draw and paint some of the things they learn throughout the year.

After 3 weeks with green fingers, the garden is now starting to take form and thanks to our great volunteers Amanda, Matt, Jonathan and Cassandra, we took the first steps with the creation of the playground and on top of that a lot of seeds have been planted in the new beds. Kids have been playing around in the garden while we have been working there and some of them even helped us planting corn, beans and cucumbers.

Saturday we went to the primary school in Gandoca and had a great day with all the kids where we introduced them to some of the activities from our program which we will implement in their curriculum every Friday starting this week.

Last week we said goodbye to our amazing brother Rumle who has been working hard on the project since September. We will miss his inspiring energy here in Puerto Viejo.
We welcome our new volunteer Arsene from Switzerland who just arrived super motivated and ready to share his experience.

This week we’ve been trimming the garden to make it ready for new seeds and new creativity. The ground was filled with old garbage both in the soil and underneath the roots. But now we’ve made two composts with help from our two super amigo neighbours. Miki and Rubi have been helping us all week, and it’s been so great experiencing such a fast development. We are looking forward to keeping you all updated during the process!
