Protecting the Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus):
Ara Manzanillo began in 2010 with the mission of reintroducing Great Green Macaws (Ara ambiguus) back into the rainforest in the South Caribbean region of Talamanca, Costa Rica. This project is first known scientifically controlled reintroduction effort the species. We are well on our way to realize our goal to establish a self-sufficient, naturall

y sustainable and large enough GGM population that eventually branches out towards the remaining wild populations of Great Greens located in Northern CR and down to central Panama. The Great Green Macaw is classified as critically endangered of extinction. The worldwide population is estimated at 1000-1500 individuals with approximately 350 in Costa Rica. Starting in 2010, the project has contributed to the free-flying population approximately 100 individuals, increasing the country's population by 25% and the world’s population by 15%. Ara Manzanillo se inició en 2010 con la misión de reintroducir la Gran Lapa Verde (Ara ambiguus) en el Caribe Sur de Talamanca, Costa Rica. Este es el primer proyecto exitoso y controlado científicamente de esta especie. La meta es establecer una población suficientemente grande, naturalmente sostentable y autosuficiente de Guacamayos Verdes que eventualmente podrá expandirse hacia las poblaciones de lapas en el norte del país y all centro de Panamá. La población mundial se estimaba en tan solo 1000-1500 individuos, de los cuales aproximadamente 350 se encontren en Costa Rica. En 2020 UICN bajó su estatus a muy critica. Desde el 2010, el proyecto ha contribuido a las poblaciones volando libres aproximadamente 100 individuos, incrementando la población mundial en el país en un 25% y la población mundial en un 7%.

We have to be honest—the first time we saw this nesting behavior, it felt a little… aggressive. Throwing wood shavings in your partner’s face?? 😅

But now, watching a mom gently toss chips onto her chick, we’re starting to rethink it. Maybe it’s not so harsh after all.

What do you think—boredom, or a small act of care and connection?

Tenemos que ser honestos: la primera vez que vimos este comportamiento en el nido, nos pareció un poco… agresivo. ¿Lanzarle virutas de madera a la cara de tu pareja? 😅

Pero ahora, al ver a una mamá echar suavemente pedacitos sobre su cría, empezamos a pensarlo diferente. Tal vez no es tan brusco como parecía.
