El podcast Un Café en el Corredor del Instituto Monteverde realizó su primera Mesa Global Temática — un encuentro donde personas de distintas comunidades a lo largo del Corredor Biológico Pájaro Campana se reunieron a compartir experiencias, perspectivas y prioridades. No para debatir. Para escucharse.

Con actividades participativas y diálogo abierto, la Mesa buscó algo sencillo y poderoso: que el propio corredor definiera de qué quiere hablar este año. Qué temas importan. Qué voces faltan. Qué conversaciones todavía no se han tenido.

In March 2026, Instituto Monteverde hosted 9 business students and 2 faculty from Walker College of Business for an 8-day immersive program in sustainable enterprise. The curriculum was designed as a living case study: an opening session with environmental economist and finance PhD Mariano Soley on development frameworks; a full farm day at Finca LIFE examining coffee production, climate vulnerability, and migrant labor economics; visits to CASEM’s women’s artisan cooperative, La Tilichera’s circular economy model, and Monteverde Natural Cosmetics’ family entrepreneurship story; a CST hotel protocol review at Hotel Belmar; a community wellbeing session with the Monteverde Community Fund; and a final field day through the Bellbird Biological Corridor to Tárcoles — where Payment for Environmental Services, sustainable fisheries, and mangrove ecology came together as the last chapter of a week-long lesson in what business can look like when it serves life.

The gap between conservation theory and conservation practice is measured in altitude, humidity, and hours in the field. At Instituto Monteverde, we believe the most rigorous science is the kind that gets its boots muddy — and that the most important classroom is the corridor itself.

In March 2026, Instituto Monteverde welcomed 10 Conservation Biology students and Professor Erin Gillam from North Dakota State University for a 10-day comparative field course spanning Costa Rica’s Caribbean and Pacific slopes. The group mist-netted birds at Crandell Reserve as part of ongoing habitat restoration research, worked hands-on at IMV’s native tree nursery, received a climate change research presentation from Yoryineth Méndez of the Tropical Science Center, hiked deep into the Children’s Eternal Rainforest in San Gerardo with biologist and author Mark Wainwright, and studied the full length of the Bellbird Biological Corridor — from cloud forest to mangrove — by boat in the Nicoya Gulf. Every day: a different ecosystem. Every ecosystem: a different set of questions.

En marzo 2026, el Instituto Monteverde recibió a 10 estudiantes de Biología de la Conservación de la North Dakota State University, junto a la profesora Erin Gillam. Durante 10 días recorrieron ambas vertientes de Costa Rica: caminaron el bosque nublado con el naturalista Mark Wainwright, visitaron La Bella Tica y almorzaron con la comunidad de San Luis, anidaron aves en la Reserva Crandell, sembraron árboles en el vivero del IMV y terminaron su viaje en un recorrido en bote por los manglares del Golfo de Nicoya. Cada lugar que visitaron tiene nombre, tiene gente, tiene historia — y gracias al IMV, ahora también tiene investigadores que lo conocen de cerca.

Instituto Monteverde has 10,700 native trees ready to donate — species carefully selected for the cloud forest ecosystem of Puntarenas, now available to landowners, farmers, schools, and community organizations willing to plant them. Language lives in places, not textbooks.

Four students from Michigan State University’s Program on Sustainability in Costa Rica — led by faculty director Vincent Delgado — spent 45 days immersed in Monteverde: university-accredited Spanish classes in the mornings, and real life in the afternoons. Farmers’ markets. Forest bathing. Cooking classes. Dance. Homestays with local families.

Since 2016, MSU’s program has brought hundreds of students and faculty to co-create knowledge with Costa Rican communities Msu — and at IMV, that partnership means language learning rooted in culture, sustainability, and genuine human connection.

This is what it sounds like when immersion actually works. 🎙️

El español no se aprende en un libro. Se aprende en el mercado del agricultor, en el bosque, en la cocina de una familia de Monteverde.

Eso es exactamente lo que vivieron 4 estudiantes de Michigan State University — una de las universidades públicas más reconocidas de Estados Unidos — durante 45 días en nuestra comunidad. De la mano de Vincent Delgado y nuestra coordinadora Karla Rojas, los estudiantes tomaron clases acreditadas de español, cocinaron, bailaron, hicieron forest bathing y se sentaron a la mesa con familias locales.
El programa de MSU lleva más de una década construyendo lazos reales con comunidades en Costa Rica — no solo visitas, sino relaciones. Msu En el IMV, eso se traduce en un español que se queda.

Cuidarse no es un lujo. No debería serlo. Pero muchas veces, entre el trabajo, los hijos, la casa y el día a día, nos olvidamos de preguntar cómo estamos — de verdad. El Festival de la Salud nació de esa pregunta sencilla y poderosa: ¿qué pasa cuando una comunidad se junta, no para producir, sino para aprender a cuidarse?

El Instituto Monteverde organizó el Festival de la Salud para la población del cantón Biológica Cañitas de Puntarenas — y llegaron 525 personas. Jóvenes trabajando autoestima. Personas mayores aprendiendo junto a jóvenes. Talleres de salud mental, higiene, comunicación, y arte que no se tratan de diagnósticos, sino de herramientas concretas para vivir mejor. Porque la salud empieza mucho antes del médico.

Sustainable development frameworks that ignore community health are building on sand. Research confirms that emotional competencies, self-esteem, and resilience are key factors in promoting psychological wellbeing — especially among populations from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. The most resilient communities aren’t those with the most resources — they’re those with the most connections.

Instituto Monteverde’s Community Health program and Health Festival model demonstrates what place-based, people-centered public health looks like in practice. 525 participants engaged in workshops on mental health, hygiene, communication, and art — building the social bonds and practical tools that no app or policy memo can replicate. With hands-on participation from children to elders, the festival created intergenerational spaces for learning, expression, and collective care — a model as applicable in Monteverde as it is in any rural community worldwide.

Sustainability frameworks built in conference rooms fail in the field. The gap between theory and practice isn’t a knowledge problem — it’s a proximity problem. At Instituto Monteverde, we believe the most durable environmental solutions emerge when global academic rigor meets the complexity of real ecosystems and real communities.

This March, Instituto Monteverde hosted 16 members of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Current Issues in Natural Resource Conservation program — including faculty Robert Kanter and Nooreen Meghani. Over 9 days, the group conducted comparative field analysis across four distinct socio-ecological zones in Costa Rica: Volcán Poás, La Fortuna, Monteverde (San Gerardo), and the Central Pacific coast (Tárcoles). Each site was examined through the lens of conservation opportunity, socio-economic pressure, and governance — building a multi-variable picture of what sustainable resource management looks like at ground level.

This is the methodology IMV has refined across years of academic partnerships: immersive, place-based, systems-aware education that produces not just graduates, but agents of informed change.

Muchas veces el turismo se siente como algo que pasa alrededor nuestro — no para nosotros. Pero hay un tipo de turismo diferente: el que viene a entender lo que aquí tenemos, a estudiarlo, y a llevar ese conocimiento de vuelta al mundo. Eso tiene un valor inmenso para la comunidad.

Del 13 al 21 de marzo, 14 estudiantes y 2 profesores de la University of Illinois — una de las universidades públicas más reconocidas de los Estados Unidos — visitaron Monteverde como parte de su curso Current Issues in Natural Resource Conservation. Coordinado por Eberth Villegas del Instituto Monteverde, el grupo recorrió San Gerardo, el Volcán Poás, La Fortuna y Tárcoles analizando las oportunidades y retos ambientales y socioeconómicos de cada zona. La salud del ecosistema comienza en el microbioma del suelo. Comprender la dinámica de los microorganismos de montaña permite desarrollar protocolos precisos para la biorremediación de aguas y el control biológico de fitopatógenos, reduciendo la dependencia de insumos sintéticos en la investigación agrícola.

En colaboración con Venas del Bosque, el Instituto Monteverde organiza este taller técnico para explorar el uso de microorganismos en la regeneración de suelos y la estimulación de la microbiota en animales. La sesión se centrará en los métodos científicos para acelerar el compostaje y la creación de enraizadores y fertilizantes naturales de alta eficacia.

The health of the ecosystem begins with the soil microbiome. Understanding the dynamics of mountain microorganisms enables the development of precise protocols for the bioremediation of water and the biological control of phytopathogens, thereby reducing reliance on synthetic inputs in agricultural research.

In collaboration with Venas del Bosque, the Monteverde Institute organizes this technical workshop to explore the use of microorganisms in soil regeneration and the stimulation of microbiota in animals. The session will focus on scientific methods to accelerate composting and the creation of highly effective rooting agents and natural fertilizers.

La resiliencia social y ecológica a largo plazo requiere una base sólida de datos y una integración multisectorial. Una agenda estratégica de 6 años permite que los esfuerzos de investigación se alineen con las necesidades reales de gobernanza y educación, transformando la teoría en metas alcanzables y medibles para la sostenibilidad regional.

Basándonos en datos de encuestas previas, logramos reunir a 79 actores clave de 40 instituciones diferentes durante la Cumbre 2025. A través de 14 mesas de trabajo, definimos un total de 28 metas estratégicas que integran cultura, salud y seguridad, creando una hoja de ruta colectiva sin precedentes para el periodo 2025-2031.

Long-term social and ecological resilience necessitates a comprehensive database and multi-sectoral integration. A six-year strategic agenda enables research initiatives to align with genuine governance and educational requirements, thereby transforming theoretical concepts into attainable and quantifiable objectives for regional sustainability.

Drawing on data from prior surveys, we successfully convened 79 key stakeholders from 40 distinct institutions during the 2025 Summit. Through 14 working groups, we established a total of 28 strategic objectives that intertwine culture, health, and safety, thereby creating an unparalleled collective roadmap for the period 2025-2031.
