🐢🌊 Eight years of sea turtle monitoring, protection, and conservation.
Since 2018, the CIRENAS–Playa Ario Sea Turtle Conservation Program has carried out a continuous effort focused on the monitoring and protection of marine species through night patrols, nest management and protection, hatchery operations, biological data collection and systematization, environmental education processes, and the participation of national and international volunteers.
This carousel presents a historical compilation of results obtained from the beginning of the program to the present, using annual data recorded throughout the different work seasons:
📍 Sea turtle records and sightings
🥚 Total nests protected within the hatchery
📊 Total number of eggs safeguarded
🐣 Total number of hatchlings released
Beyond the numbers, each piece of data represents hours of monitoring under field conditions, hundreds of kilometers covered during patrols, human effort, institutional cooperation, and the ongoing commitment of people who have dedicated their time and work to the conservation of these species.
During 2023, the program faced a significant loss following the destruction of our monitoring station due to a fire. This affected approximately 80% of the materials and equipment used for protection and monitoring activities. This situation represented a direct impact on the operational infrastructure required for the development of the sea turtle conservation program activities.
However, the commitment to sea turtle protection remained intact.
Monitoring and conservation activities continued thanks to the collective effort and adaptability of the team, allowing the protection of nests and the continuity of the program.
Currently, looking ahead to the 2026 season, we aim to strengthen our operational capacity once again through the reconstruction and acquisition of essential materials and equipment to ensure the continuity of conservation actions.
