Hola!

We have accomplished a lot in the last few days and just have the finishing touches left on our project!

On Tuesday, we completed applying the coat of plaster for the staircase in preparation for painting the following day. We also worked on painting a new set of goalposts that are smaller and meant for kids. Additionally, we were able to select the tiles we wanted to use for the mosaic.

On Wednesday, we painted the entire staircase and handrails (grey and blue respectively). The tiles we purchased the previous day were broken into shards that were then used to put together our mosaic.

On Thursday, we did some touch-ups to the staircase and got to stick our mosaic on the podium we constructed a few days earlier. We spent the afternoon designing and painting small pictures on the risers of the staircase. In preparation for next year, we also took some field measurements of the field and surrounding areas.

The kids were super excited to help with the painting process and did a great job. Tomorrow, they will be included in the last part of our project - having them do handprints on the landings of the staircase. -Arjun

¡Hola amigos! 🌴

Here are some pictures from our first day on site today. We met the contractor team, were welcomed by the community committees leader, tied a lot of rebar for the stairs, toured the school with the director, and had a wonderful lunch thanks to the women of Lorena. Unfortunately, a tropical storm blew in after lunch so we made a plan for the week and headed out early. Once it cleared up we ended our day at the beach!

We are super excited to continue working. Over the next 2 days, 2 visiting volunteer groups are coming to help out so we look forward to seeing what progress we can make. In the inevitable case of rain we hope to get started painting the handrails and creating the mosaic to match the bountiful colors of the school! Stay tuned for another update in a few days. 🔨

We’re having a profit share! Start next week off right by coming out to Cold Cookie Co. on Monday night to get some dessert and support our project! Spread the word and bring some friends!

Right before spring break, our team submitted our 60% design plans and presented our 3rd of 4 Milestone presentations to the Service Learning Advisory Board! Thank you to all the family, friends, advisors, and other donors who have supported our goal. We celebrated by cooking a classic Costa Rican dish, gallo pinto, with homemade Salsa Lizano! 🌶🎉

As for our project scope, we've transitioned back to stairs from the ramp to maintain a safe design in the face of spatial constraints and cost limitations. For the rest of the semester, we'll be finalizing our technical design, preparing sustainability plans, meeting with community members and the contractor in Lorena, and gearing up for in-person (🤞) implementation! BUT - we still need your help. Our current cost estimates total in at just over $15,000. We've currently raised just under $11,500 and need YOUR help getting to the finish line! We invite you to share our project with anyone you know who might be interested in providing a contribution. Donations can be made via venmo to or online at the links in our bio. ¡Pura vida!

💙, Lauryn
