Nearly 70% of Costa Rican high school students have turned to alcohol at some point. In many rural communities, opportunities are scarce, and too many children grow up without a safe place to belong.

A pair of cleats is more than a gift of sport. It’s a gift of hope. A chance to belong. Another path. Another future.

Some of our most special moments are the ones we never stop long enough to share.

This year we’d like to change that and start telling more of the story behind Tacos for Ticos.

With the World Cup happening, we’re feeling inspired to share some of the incredible people and communities we’ve had the privilege to meet through soccer.

Last year, we drove more than two hours into the mountains of Costa Rica to visit a community that most tourists—and even many Ticos—will never see.

This is Zapatón.

Costa Rica is famous for its beautiful beaches and ecotourism, but what has always made this country so special to us is its people and communities.

Zapatón is one of 24 Indigenous reserves in Costa Rica and is home to the Hüetar people. The reserve is made up of four communities and is home to about 500 people.

Soccer is a huge part of life here. The men’s and women’s teams regularly travel to neighboring communities to play on weekends, and the love for the game is obvious the moment you arrive.

Now that everyone is (somewhat) back to real life, we wanted to take a moment to share what you made possible this past tournament.

This wasn’t just a weekend of games—it was real impact.

Because of this community, we were able to:

• Deliver 400+ pairs of cleats to kids and adults
• Donate 60+ full uniforms
• Provide 50+ brand new Adidas socks
• Distribute 15+ soccer balls
• Hand out 50+ mini balls sponsored by the Seattle Sounders FC
• Bring 50+ cupcakes to the sports clinic (because joy matters too)
• Supply 20+ kg of fresh fruit over two days
• Donate 10+ pairs of goalkeeper gloves

And beyond the numbers—there were the quiet moments: the extra shoes someone packed for a specific kid, the gear handed off person-to-person, the time, energy, and heart from volunteers, players, and coaches.

That’s the part you can’t quantify.

This is what Tacos for Ticos is about.
Not charity—community. Not giving to, but showing up with.
