The Sustainability Laboratory

The Sustainability Laboratory The Sustainability Laboratory was established in 2008 by Dr. Michael Ben-Eli in order to help address urgent sustainability issues facing the planet.

The Sustainability Laboratory works to address urgent sustainability challenges facing the planet by creating and demonstrating effective tools for catalyzing radical change. To guide its activities, The Lab has developed its own unique, action-oriented conceptual framework, which takes a holistic perspective and features cross-sector and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Sustainability is more than just a buzzword—it is a fundamental shift in consciousness and action. At The Lab, we define it as a dynamic equilibrium between a population and the carrying capacity of its environment.

To achieve this, we look at five interconnected domains:
- Material: Containing entropy and resource productivity
- Economic: Aligning the world’s economy with nature's regenerative capacity
- Life: Maintaining the essential diversity of all life forms
- Social: Maximizing human self-realization and freedom for all
- Spiritual: Recognizing the seamless continuum that links us to the cosmos

Because these domains are systemic in nature, a piecemeal approach is unlikely to yield lasting results. We must integrate all five to realize sustainability as an enduring state.

Our impact knows no borders! 🌍

Check out the global reach of The Sustainability Laboratory's projects.

As the world focuses on global climate solutions at COP30, we're proud to celebrate tangible action on the ground.

From empowering migrant communities in Costa Rica (Project Transition), to pioneering Bedouin-led sustainable farming in the Negev Desert (Project Wadi Attir), and turning a toxic abandoned mine site in Arizona into a thriving ecosystem (Project Turquoise Mountain), we're collaborating with communities across continents to create a more sustainable world.

The Global Sustainability Fellows initiative is a transformative, graduate-level journey designed to prepare the next generation of sustainability leaders. We emphasize a powerful systems thinking approach to confront urgent global challenges, moving beyond traditional, fragmented solutions.

Our action-oriented fieldwork and collaborative problem-solving are guided by The Lab’s five core sustainability domains (material, life, social, economic, and spiritual), ensuring fellows develop a comprehensive and interdisciplinary mastery over complex issues. This methodology combines deep theoretical learning with essential on-the-ground international exposure.

A heartfelt thank you to the exceptional community that gathered with us for Beyond the Frame: An Evening with The Sustainability Lab at The 8th Floor Gallery. We are especially grateful to The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation for hosting this truly vital convening for our network.

The conversation centered on the powerful intersection of environmental art and activism, reinforcing our shared responsibility toward the planet's future. We were honored to hear profound insights from Lab founder Dr. Michael Ben-Eli and the brilliant exhibition curators, Anjuli Nanda Diamond and George Bolster.

This intimate dialogue explored how artistic expression serves as a critical catalyst, urging us to turn reflection into substantive action. The exhibit itself represented a powerful visual resonance with The Lab's approach, mirroring the Five Core Sustainability Principles that drive our work.

We are deeply grateful for the commitment and rigorous engagement shared by everyone in the room. Your presence affirmed the need for this cross-disciplinary dialogue that drives our mission forward. If you were unable to attend, we look forward to the next opportunity to share our work with you.
