We Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release the abandoned, injured, or habituated animals of Costa Rica! You will have an opportunity to learn about and help animals you would likely not have the opportunity to encounter in the wild. As a non-profit organization, we think its important for you to know that 100% of your donation is going to feed, care for, give veterinary care, improve habitats and so much

more. One of biggest passions other than rescuing, is educating our youth. There are so many ways you can help and here are a few: monetary donation of any amount, supplies, food, your time, your skills! Please contact us for more details and reservations!

Every year, hundreds of animals are admitted to our clinic. 🐒🐾
Behind every successful release, there is a story that began at a critical moment, and a massive amount of effort from our staff, volunteers, and supporters.
Healing their bodies is only the first part. The true transformation happens outside, working hand in hand with the community through environmental education and mitigation projects to build a safer world for them.
Saving a life is incredible, but changing perspectives and the environment so they don't suffer is our true goal. Will you join us?

Detrás de cada liberación exitosa, hay una historia que comenzó en un momento crítico y mucho esfuerzo de parte de nuestro staff, voluntarios y personas que nos apoyan.

Sanar sus cuerpos es solo la primera parte. La verdadera transformación ocurre afuera, trabajando mano a mano con la comunidad a través de la educación ambiental y proyectos de mitigación para construir un mundo más seguro para ellos.

Meet Richard! 🌿

Richard joined Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary in January 2023 as part of our maintenance team. Through his landscaping and maintenance work, he helps create a safe and well-maintained environment for both our rescued wildlife and the people who care for them.

What motivates him most is combining his passion for animals with the opportunity to support the team and Costa Rica's wildlife every day.

His favorite sanctuary animals are our spider monkeys, and when he's not at work, you'll most likely find him playing soccer. ⚽

We're grateful to have Richard as part of the Alturas team! 💚

Richard forma parte del equipo de mantenimiento de Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary desde enero de 2023. Con su trabajo de jardinería y mantenimiento, ayuda a mantener un entorno seguro y en buenas condiciones para la fauna silvestre bajo nuestro cuidado y para todo el equipo.

Lo que más lo motiva es combinar su gusto por los animales con la oportunidad de apoyar al equipo y a la vida silvestre de Costa Rica cada día.

Sus animales favoritos del santuario son los monos araña, y fuera del trabajo disfruta jugar fútbol. ⚽

Neme's story shows what is possible when an orphaned ocelot receives the care it needs. 🐾

After months of rehabilitation, he was able to return to the wild, where predators like ocelots play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. 🍃

But Neme isn't the only ocelot that needs help. Ocelots continue to arrive at our clinic, and every cub deserves the same chance.

La historia de Neme nos muestra lo que es posible cuando un ocelote huérfano recibe los cuidados que necesita. 🐾

Después de meses de rehabilitación, pudo regresar a la vida silvestre, donde los ocelotes desempeñan un papel importante en el equilibrio de los ecosistemas. 🍃

Pero Neme no es el único ocelote que necesita ayuda. Los ocelotes siguen llegando a nuestra clínica, y cada cachorro merece la misma oportunidad.

Electrocution continues to threaten Costa Rica's wildlife. 🦥

That's why we're working alongside ICE to create safer pathways for wildlife through rope bridges and other prevention measures.

This year, we've already installed two wildlife rope bridges, and we're planning to install six more in areas where animals are at risk.

Rescue saves lives. Prevention saves even more.

La electrocución sigue siendo una de las principales amenazas para la fauna silvestre de Costa Rica. 🦥

Por eso trabajamos junto a ICE para crear rutas más seguras para la fauna mediante puentes de cuerda y otras medidas de prevención.

Este año ya hemos instalado dos puentes de cuerda para fauna silvestre y tenemos previsto instalar seis más en zonas donde los animales enfrentan mayores riesgos.

El rescate salva vidas. La prevención salva aún más.

While much of the attention goes to the animals, caring for wildlife takes a lot more than veterinary care and rehabilitation.

Juan and Richard spend their days making sure the sanctuary can function safely and efficiently by building enclosures, repairing structures, cutting grass and a lot more.

Their work may not always be visible, but it is essential to everything we do.

Aunque gran parte de la atención se centra en los animales, cuidar la vida silvestre requiere mucho más que atención veterinaria y rehabilitación.

Juan y Richard pasan sus días asegurándose de que el santuario funcione de manera segura y eficiente, construyendo recintos, reparando estructuras, cortando el césped y realizando muchas otras tareas esenciales.

While many rescued animals easily capture hearts, crocodiles are often overlooked.

Nela deserves the same chance at a better life, and that's why we're working to improve her habitat with better drainage, a veterinary management area and a more natural sandy substrate.

Mientras que muchos animales rescatados conquistan corazones con facilidad, los cocodrilos suelen pasar desapercibidos.

Last year, Holcim donated cement and concrete blocks that have helped us build and strengthen different areas around the sanctuary, creating safer and better spaces for wildlife recovery.

A mother raccoon returning for her babies, one by one. 🦝❤️

These babies were found inside a hotel bathroom under renovation. The staff contacted us for help, so our team carefully moved them to a safe spot nearby and set up camera traps. 📷

A little while later, mom returned, and over the next several hours, she carried each baby, one by one, to a new den.

Every year, we receive healthy wild babies that were picked up by well-meaning people who believed they had been abandoned. But often, the mother is still nearby and planning to return.

If you find a baby wild animal alone:
👁 Observe from a distance
🕑 Give the mother time to return
📞 Contact a wildlife rescue center before intervening

Sometimes, the best way to help wildlife is knowing when not to interfere. 🌿

Una mamá mapache regresando por sus crías, una por una. 🦝❤️

Estas crías fueron encontradas dentro de un baño de un hotel en remodelación. El personal nos llamó para pedir ayuda, así que nuestro equipo las trasladó cuidadosamente a un lugar seguro cercano e instaló cámaras trampa. 📷

Poco tiempo después, la mamá regresó y, durante las siguientes horas, fue llevando a cada una de sus crías, una por una, a un nuevo refugio.

Cada año recibimos crías silvestres sanas que fueron recogidas por personas bien intencionadas que creían que habían sido abandonadas. Pero muchas veces la madre sigue cerca y tiene intención de regresar.

Si encuentras una cría silvestre sola:
👁 Obsérvala desde la distancia
🕑 Dale tiempo a la madre para regresar
📞 Contacta a un centro de rescate de vida silvestre antes de intervenir

A veces, la mejor manera de ayudar a la vida silvestre es saber cuándo no intervenir. 🌿
