Remembering the wonderful lectures from the Ecology in Costa Rica Winter Term course. We explored fascinating topics such as Urban Ecology and Jaguars in Costa Rica, and complemented our learning with hands-on experiences like a traditional cooking class and a co-curricular visit to an organic pineapple farm, connecting theory with real-life practice

Part II | Cultural & Natural Costa Rica 🇨🇷✨
January—Costa Rica’s little summer—framed the cultural and natural component of the Custom Elon Higher Education program.
With great enthusiasm, students visited La Paz Waterfall Gardens, explored San José, and connected with local traditions during a hands-on cooking class at the Museo de Cultura Popular, preparing traditional prestiños.
They also visited the Quitirrisi Indigenous Territory, home to the Huetar community, where they learned directly from community members about ancestral knowledge, identity, and cultural resilience.
Through nature, culture, and community, this experience reinforced that learning abroad is deeply human and rooted in connection. 🌿💚

Custom- I PART
This Winter was full of powerful energy with the Custom Elon Higher Education in Costa Rica program 🇨🇷✨
Through a Faculty-Led experience with graduate students, IFSA collaborated on site with three universities in Costa Rica—Universidad Hispanoamericana (private), Universidad Nacional (public), and Texas Tech University Costa Rica (private)—to explore internationalization, pedagogy, and higher education in CR.
Beyond the classroom, we also shared time with our Host Family Program: learning about the administration and, more importantly, hearing firsthand experiences from IFSA Costa Rica host families, which brought the human side of study abroad to life 💛🏡
One key takeaway? Education goes beyond academics—it is emotional, built on empathy, kindness, and connection, especially when learning abroad.
Thank you, Elon, for the trust and the beautiful exchange of knowledge.

As part of the January and Australia Outbound in Costa Rica program, students visited Cerro Vueltas Lodge in the Cerro de la Muerte highlands, where they explored the farm and surrounding property while learning about cloud forest ecosystems, sustainable practices, and conservation efforts—connecting classroom concepts with hands-on experiences in one of Costa Rica’s most biodiverse regions.

Our first co-curricular activity took us to Cerro Dantas, a protected area located in Costa Rica’s Central Volcanic Mountain Range, known for its cloud forest ecosystem, cool climate, and high biodiversity. This region plays a key role in water conservation and is home to dense montane vegetation shaped by constant mist and elevation.

While exploring the trails, students observed endemic species unique to Costa Rica, bringing ecological concepts to life beyond the classroom. The January and Australia Outbound in Costa Rica students were highly engaged, curious, and more than ready to learn through direct experience in one of the country’s most remarkable natural landscapes.
