Hosted by Natural State Centre for the Nature Economy, through its Indigenous and Community Solution Hub, we welcomed our first 25 Morans (14-25 years) onsite for Rangeland LAMP (Leadership and Management Programme) - a collaboration between Natural State, Forward Consulting Limited and True Range. 🤩
Participants were drawn from 5 community conservancies and are the first cohort of 100 herders the program will train.

A highlight during the training was when the Morans reflected on what the training changed in them. Several spoke about drought, and how in the past they had forcefully driven their herds into the conservancies in search of pasture, sparking conflict.
They shared that they now understand why, as young leaders, peaceful coexistence with the conservancies matters, and that there are better approaches during hard seasons that harm no one.

For many of the 25 Morans, the certificate they earned is the first formal recognition of their skills, and a step toward becoming stewards of a landscape where communities, livestock and wildlife thrive side by side.

This is a scalable blueprint for Indigenous-led rangeland restoration across Kenya and beyond. We’re proud to be building it alongside True Range and Forward Consulting and the amazing Morans.

This International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate the communities whose knowledge, leadership, and innovation continue to shape healthier landscapes and stronger futures.

At the NATURAL STATE Centre for the Nature Economy, our Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation Hub is a space where Indigenous knowledge holders, researchers, practitioners, and innovators come together to learn from one another, exchange ideas, and develop solutions for the challenges facing people and nature today.

By bringing Indigenous knowledge together with scientific research and emerging technologies, we aim to build restoration solutions that are locally rooted, scientifically informed, and designed to create lasting impact.
Today, and every day, we celebrate Indigenous Peoples as leaders in shaping a thriving nature economy.

Now we’d love to tell you why😃.

The African Centre for Nature Restoration and Resilience  has evolved into the NATURAL STATE Centre for the Nature Economy .
The new name reflects what the Centre has grown to become.

Yes, restoration is still at our core, but today’s nature economy needs people who can restore landscapes, build enterprises, unlock nature finance, apply new technologies, and lead lasting change. That’s exactly what the Centre is training people to do💚.

A defining part of this vision is the Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation Hub. The Hub creates a space where Indigenous People and Local Communities, researchers, and practitioners work together to document knowledge, exchange ideas, and develop restoration solutions by combining Indigenous knowledge with scientific research and emerging technologies.

Our name has evolved to better reflect our vision.
The mission hasn’t changed: building people, restoring nature, and growing a thriving nature economy. 🌍

NATURAL STATE’s Lucy Smyth recently spent a week in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, driving into elephant corridors to support building something critical: baseline biodiversity data👏🏽.

With a team from Gazelle Eco and Ecoexist Trust , she established vegetation transect monitoring protocols across 13 kilometres of dense habitat. The result: About 15 woody species and over 120 herbaceous plants collected and identified.

This baseline data will contribute to biodiversity metrics that credibly underpin conservation credits, rigorous data and measurable impact.

At NATURAL STATE, we believe the future of climate action depends on people who can field data into meaningful action.

Ceciliah's journey is a testament to the power of combining science, purpose, and continuous learning. Since joining our Research team in 2022, she transitioned from monitoring to and research across Kenya's landscapes. She strengthened her geospatial analysis skills, transforming field data into maps that help communities,
landowners, and conservation partners better understand ecosystem change.

Her commitment to learning led her to the Yale Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI) Tropical Forest Landscapes Certificate Program, where she developed practical skills in stakeholder engagement, and long-term ecological monitoring.

Today, Ceciliah applies those lessons combining biodiversity monitoring, carbon science and restoration to demonstrate how data can inform better decisions for both people and nature. She has also contributed to international research on biodiversity credits, participated in global conservation workshops, and is heading to the University of Twente to pursue a Master's degree in Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation.

That’s exactly what the 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 is built to provide, starting with our first cohort of 33 restoration leaders from 6 African countries. Its transformative, systems-based approach centers youth, women, and Indigenous people, particularly young professionals already in, or aspiring to join, the nature economy.
Through the inaugural 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞, they spent two intensive weeks in on-site training, then kept building, connecting, exchanging insights, and sharpening their strategies through our online learning platform.

Hearing them speak about the experience says it all. They’re walking away with more than technical frameworks. They carry a strengthened peer network, practical monitoring tools, and the confidence to drive large-scale restoration from the ground up.

The isn’t a distant horizon. It’s rooted in communities, carried by leaders like these, and taking shape right here.

This marathon is about far more than the finish line. It’s a global movement that blends world-class athletics with conservation and community development.

For NATURAL STATE, taking part in this marathon reflects 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 that depend on Kenya’s incredible wildlife. We run to protect, to give back, and to honor the wild places that inspire everything we do.

Norma is our new 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥-𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫, joining the 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 within our 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 & 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.😃

Based in Mexico, Norma brings seven years of experience building scalable, user-facing web applications, with a specialty in React, TypeScript, Node.js, and PostgreSQL. Her background spans e-commerce, education technology, geospatial analytics, and environmental data platforms, aggregating restoration and monitoring data.

Norma will be contributing to the development and maintenance of 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬, 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦. Her work will sit at the core of what we do: translating science into impact.

Norma holds a BSc in Computer Science from UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) and is an ACM ICPC regional competitor.

Rangelands are large natural areas of land such as grasslands, savannas, and shrublands, where grasses and shrubs dominate rather than dense forests. They support both wildlife and livestock, and are critical to the livelihoods of millions of people. Despite this importance, 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝.

At present, this is being tested in southern Namibia, where 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 ORKCA-Orange River-Karoo Conservation Area and the 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬.

This is to restore one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest arid landscapes and build a replicable model for climate resilience, biodiversity recovery, and economic sustainability for local communities.

This initiative aims to restore 651 hectares of degraded mangrove ecosystems by 2028, strengthening biodiversity, supporting livelihoods, and building resilient coastal communities.
