The most powerful restoration tool here isn’t hi-tech. It’s a pair of pliers.
For over a century, this landscape was cut into pieces by fences. Wildlife that once moved freely across the Orange River–Karoo, following the rain, the grazing and the seasons, hit wire at every boundary.
Now, the fences are coming down.

ORKCA , working with neighbouring landowners, is removing internal fencing to weave separate farms back into one connected landscape, letting animals roam, graze and migrate the way they’re meant to.

Rewilding sometimes looks less like adding something, and more like removing what got in the way.

Thirty-one practitioners from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Cameroon and Namibia recently completed the Landscape Restoration Projects course at NATURAL STATE’s Centre for the Nature Economy and received their certificates of completion. 🤩

Over several months of online and in-person learning, they’ve worked through landscape restoration, monitoring, strategy development, and community engagement.
Beyond the course, we are helping to equip a new generation of practitioners and leaders to contribute to the nature economy across Africa and beyond.
These practitioners are going back to their landscapes equipped to lead differently. They’re building a nature economy, one where regenerating ecosystems and creating sustainable livelihoods go hand in hand.

Walter, from Uganda, shared his reflection - “I appreciate learning more on stakeholder identification and engagement. We just introduced community-led conservation in our work in Uganda. It was a challenge for us before, but now I understand the best practices. Much of that comes from this course.”

This cohort will join our developing community of practice at the Centre for the Nature Economy. They’ll stay connected through peer learning, technical support, access to our tools, and regular learning calls. They become multipliers, bringing what they’ve learned back to their communities.

Twelve members of the Subuiga community have begun a 25-day Green Economy training programme, supported by NATURAL STATE, partnering with The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

All participants were selected because they’re already practising this work, from regenerative agriculture to tree nurseries. The training builds on what they already practice and strengthens the knowledge held in the community.

Across 25 days, participants deepen expertise in regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, soil health management, urban farming, and clean energy. Each area is chosen to strengthen sustainable livelihoods and create pathways for community members to participate in the green economy.
Classes at the Lewa Conservation Education Centre are paired with field visits to working farms and nurseries around Matunda and Ntumburi.

The aim is for these skills to stay in the community. This is more than a 25-day course. It’s a commitment to community empowerment and locally-led green economy solutions that will shape what’s possible for Subuiga and beyond.

Our president, Jonathan Baillie, officially opened the programme, marking the start of what we hope will be the first of many cohorts. Follow along as we share their learning journey to graduation and the impact it creates.

🌳 🌲 Today is , Kenya’s environmental day. It’s a moment to recognize the urgency of what we face. 50% of the earth’s natural habitats have been replaced, 75% of our land has been significantly altered by human actions, and without rapid action, 95% could be degraded by 2050.

But Mazingira Day is more than an acknowledgment. It’s a call to action.

At NATURAL STATE, we’ve built the technology that makes restoration measurable. Our Natural State Health Check uses sensors, drones, and machine learning to quantify ecosystem status across biodiversity, carbon, water, and human wellbeing. We measure landscapes faster, cheaper, and more reliably at scale. We build the pathways for communities to participate in the green economy, turning stewardship into sustainable livelihoods. We train practitioners who become multipliers, spreading knowledge across landscapes and generations.

Healthy ecosystems. Healthy communities. Healthy futures.

Today, our youth advisor Faustina sat at the table with landscape association representatives from across Kenya, to discuss sustaining conservation in the country, hosted by LGT Venture Philanthropy, Kenya Wildlife Conservancies and Maliasili.

She came ready to push the conversation forward, and asked the room the hard questions, on climate change, and on why youth voices are so often missing from conversations that will shape their future. She gave the room something to reflect on long after the session ended.

✅ This is why we invest in young leaders. They've earned the right to ask the questions the rest of us should be asking too.

This land didn’t fail. It was overused, carved into fenced fragments and its wildlife eliminated. This landscape carries scars, and they have a history.

For much of the last century this arid landscape was farmed intensively for Karakul sheep. Newborn lamb pelts fetched high prices in European fur fashion, and that demand drove stocking levels far beyond what an arid system can sustain. Wildlife was removed because it was seen as competition for grazing, and predators were hunted out to protect livestock.
When global fashion shifted away from fur, the market collapsed. Droughts made the land unproductive even for extensive livestock farming. What remained was an over-utilised, degraded landscape: fragmented by fences, stripped of vegetation, scarred by erosion, and marked by the remnants of abandoned infrastructure.

Natural State and ORKCA are not trying to force this landscape back to what it was. The approach is to facilitate natural recovery.
We are removing the pressures that broke it and letting the land heal, with a deliberate, science-led push where it needs one. The first step in that healing is reconnecting the land itself.

🌵An arid landscape is not an empty one. It is full of life you will not find anywhere else on the planet.

The Orange River–Karoo sits within a recognised centre of endemism and borders the Succulent Karoo, the only arid region on Earth ranked as a global biodiversity hotspot. Of its more than 6,350 plant species, nearly 2,440 grow nowhere else in the world. Plants and animals here evolved to survive extreme heat, cold and drought, and in the process became unlike anything else on the planet, from strange stem succulents to the world's smallest tortoise.

Protecting this landscape is not about saving "empty" land. It is about safeguarding biodiversity that exists nowhere else, and the people and wildlife who depend on it.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, rangers and supporting organizations came together, Natural State included, to think of ways to keep funding their vital work, and the Wildlife Ranger Challenge (WRC) was born.

Looking back over the years, Jonathan, President of Natural State, recalls one of its most memorable moments. He remembers the time a winning team of rangers chose to give their award to another team they felt was more deserving. That is the spirit of this challenge.

This year’s WRC took over the The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy , bringing together 24 teams across the country. The test was a grueling 21km race with each ranger carrying up to 22kg of kit on their backs (22kg for men and 10kg for women).

The top three men teams this year were Mountain Bongo Project (MBP) in first place, followed by Sera Wildlife Conservancy and then the Mara Elephant Project , with the winners pushing through to the finish, exhausted, but elated. The winning female teams were IFAW Olgulului and Sera Rhino Conservancy respectively.

Huge congratulations to everyone who took part, and a big thank you to all the volunteers who kept the rangers going with water and snacks along the way, and even poured water over them to help them cool down in the blazing heat.
Here’s to an even bigger and better challenge next year!👏🏽

You think you’re looking at a wasteland? Look again.

When people hear “desert,” they picture emptiness. But the Orange River–Karoo is one of the most quietly extraordinary arid landscapes in Africa, a place that has learned to live on almost nothing.
It is where three biomes meet, the Nama-Karoo, the Succulent Karoo and the Desert, and where, after a long dry spell, a single rainfall event can turn bare ground into a carpet of wildflowers.

This is a masterclass in survival and it’s worth protecting.

What does it take to measure biodiversity? 🤔
It starts with getting the data right.📊✅

Peter Matee, our Carbon Field Researcher, recently joined the team at Enarau Conservancy in the Northern Maasai Mara to train them on data collection procedures and Natural State’s biodiversity monitoring methodologies.

The training supports the baseline biodiversity survey for the Living Landscapes project, coordinated by the Centre for Ecosystem Restoration Kenya (CER-K) and Enarau Conservancy, and part of Plan Vivo Nature’s first set of biodiversity crediting projects.
The Living Landscapes project seeks to restore native ecosystems🌿, improve habitat connectivity, increase biodiversity🌱🐜🦏, and strengthen coexistence between communities and wildlife. 🦒💚

Data collection is not the only part of the process. Peter also trained the team on uploading their data directly from the field to the cloud, through Natural State Analytics platform, making it easier to store, access and analyse information as it is collected.

From species monitoring to landscape restoration, reliable data helps us understand where we are starting from and measure how conservation efforts are making a difference. 🌍💚
