During the Landscape Restoration Projects Course, the inaugural cohort of The NATURAL STATE Centre for the Nature Economy explored a critical question: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞?

The answer came down to two equally important pillars:
1️⃣𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 -𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐌𝐑𝐕) 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. 2️⃣𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 -𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.
Real restoration happens when both work together.

The NATURAL STATE Centre for the Nature Economy (CNE) is designed to provide a platform and space where this wholesome knowledge is accessible to all local and indigenous communities across Africa.

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭! 🤩

Some of the NATURAL STATE staff and our local friends .butterbean Nanyuki enjoyed their share of fresh organic broccoli, spinach, and french beans straight from the 𝐂𝐍𝐄 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐲.

The Natural State Centre for the Nature Economy is being built as 𝐚 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐮𝐛: solar-powered, organic food-producing, and rooted in 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.
These harvests will nourish our team, support local communities, and eventually be available for sale beyond.😃

But that’s not all. 🌱
We’re committed to teaching 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 to ensure local communities grow sustainably,  and with less reliance on harmful farm chemicals.

This is just the beginning! Stay tuned for more stories from our community😃

This #𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐃𝐚𝐲 we ask one question: 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞? 🌱

For us, it starts on the ground: In the roots of African grasslands storing carbon that most markets can’t yet measure. In acoustic monitors across Laikipia’s savannas. In the hands of restoration leaders across Africa, turning community knowledge into fundable projects through our Centre for the Nature Economy.💚

It’s in soil coming back to life🌱. Water systems recovering. Biodiversity returning, one landscape at a time.🌍

Climate action at Africa’s scale cannot be designed from the outside. It has to be built by the people who know these landscapes best, with the tools, training, and finance to back them up.

What NATURAL STATE is building requires experts who understand both the science on the ground and the complexity of delivering at scale. Anabelle brings both 💪🏼!

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:Grasslands store vast amounts of carbon, mostly underground in roots and soils, yet these pools are often underestimated or ignored.
The Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) notes that aboveground grass biomass is negligible, but belowground (roots) has been hard to quantify rigorously within a recognized standard. Existing soil carbon tools don’t include grass roots.

For nature finance to scale across African rangelands and grasslands, the science must hold up. This tool is designed to do that, unlocking additional carbon pools and financing for projects that need it most.

This , we are reminded of something simple: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲. 💚

This year’s theme, 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭,captures exactly how we think about restoration. The global targets: 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟑𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭, reversing biodiversity loss, closing the nature finance gap, are only achievable if the work on the ground is real✅, locally led🤝🏽, and scientifically verified📊.

At NATURAL STATE, we are building the tools, training restoration leaders, and developing the financial mechanisms that turn local action into lasting global impact.

Thriving ecosystems create thriving communities. Today and every day.

🌍 Acting locally for global impact.

What a journey!🤩

We walked through , dug into the scientific data at our Research Centre, and sat with Laikipia elders who reminded us that restoration isn't new, it's ancient.

To the 33 leaders who showed up with open minds and full hearts, thank you for being the beginning of something bigger. 🙏🏽

We will be highlighting reflections from the cohort over the next weeks.
We are grateful to everybody that made this possible. 👏🏼

Here's to many more. 🌍🚀
