Morning Star Shines Bright: 11th Morning Star Cup Sci-Fi Awards Conclude with a Focus on "Reconstruction" and International Collaboration

The 11th "Morning Star Cup" Chinese Original Sci-Fi Literature Contest Awards Ceremony was held under the stars at Shenzhen University Town, embodying the theme of "Reconstruction"—seeking order and hope amidst global change.

Breaking from tradition, the event was held on an open lawn, celebrating the integration of youth, community, and global perspectives in Nanshan District.

🏆 New Generation Power: The ceremony showcased the vibrant energy of China's emerging sci-fi writers:

Best Novel: Son of the Wind and Sand (风沙之子) by Ding Tianran—a "wasteland punk" epic praised for its pursuit of love and freedom.

Best Novella: Give Me a World (给我一个世界)—won by a high school student, highlighting impressive depth.

Best Short Story: Flowers Bloom on This Shore (此岸花盛开在彼海) by Xiu Cheng.

🌍 Globalizing Chinese Sci-Fi: A major focus was the comprehensive upgrade of the "Calvino" Sci-Fi Overseas Initiative, designed to promote Chinese sci-fi internationally. Key partnerships were signed:

Literary Track: Collaboration with Italy's Future Fiction to push Chinese works into the Italian and European markets.

Film/Art Track: Strategic agreement with the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival to facilitate cross-field exchange.

These partnerships establish a "dual-track mechanism" for Chinese Sci-Fi to successfully navigate the international market through both literature and screen arts.

Bridging Civilizations Through Sci-Fi: China-Italy Art Masters Exchange Kicks Off in Shenzhen's Nanshan District!

In celebration of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Italy, the "China-Italy Art Masters International Exchange Series" officially launched in Shenzhen's Nanshan District on November 22nd!

This grand event, themed "Sci-Fi and Imagination," gathered leading Chinese and Italian sci-fi experts, artists, and scholars for a profound cross-cultural dialogue and an immersive cultural experience. The event runs until December 6th.

The event featured Italian sci-fi legend Francesco Verso (three-time winner of Italy's highest sci-fi honor, the Urania Award) and Asia's first Hugo Award winner illustrator, Zhao Enzhe.

Zhao Enzhe and Italian illustrator Lorenzo Ala captivated the audience with live drawing, merging Eastern aesthetics (like Chinese Hanfu) with futuristic sci-fi elements.

SUSTech Professor Wu Yan noted the complementary nature of the two traditions: Chinese sci-fi rooted in Tian Ren He Yi (unity of man and nature), versus Italian sci-fi's focus on "existential poetry" inherited from Dante. Scholars emphasized that innovation today is about reshaping human values and self-perception, not just creating new tech.

Beyond the deep discussions, the event offered a taste of Italy, with authentic Italian antipasti, gelato, and espresso, allowing attendees to experience the culture firsthand. Guests also toured the "Sci-Fi and Imagination Works Exhibition", which showcases masterpieces from both countries.

This spectacular cross-border collaboration showcases Nanshan's role as an open, innovative, and international urban hub.

The highly anticipated 3rd Shenzhen Sci-Fi Film Industry Competition concluded on November 8th, marking a pivotal moment in the 10th Shenzhen (International) Week of Science and Technology Films.

A Unique Focus: As the first professional contest in China dedicated to sci-fi film industrialization enterprises, this year's event attracted over 100 participants—including top enterprises and young directors—from major sci-fi hubs like Beijing, Chengdu, and Shenzhen. The roadshows featured 25+ projects across key sub-sectors: IP development, AIGC visual effects, VR games, sci-fi derivatives, and virtual production.

Responding to the Digital Age: In an era driven by high-speed advancements in AR/VR and AI, the film industry is undergoing a massive transformation. This competition directly addresses the challenges and opportunities of this data and AI-driven digital era. It serves as a crucial step to promote film technology innovation and elevate Shenzhen’s industry influence.

Shenzhen: The Sci-Fi Hub: With China's sci-fi industry revenue reaching ¥108.96 Billion in 2024 (thanks to IPs like The Wandering Earth and The Three-Body Problem), Shenzhen is actively strengthening its position. The competition aims to:

Map the Industry Chain: Fully catalogue Shenzhen's sci-fi industrial ecosystem.

Attract Talent: Draw excellent upstream and downstream enterprises to settle in the city.

Establish an Ecosystem: Foster a complete industrial chain integrating R&D, production, distribution, and exhibition.

The major awards (including Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Effects, and Best Sci-Fi Concept Design) will be presented at the closing ceremony of the Technology Film Week on November 14th.

Headline Suggestion: Beyond Steampunk: Exploring the "Punk" Core of Silkpunk Sci-Fi, Defined by Yan Wanqing's Epic The Gilt Peach

The Silkpunk genre, coined by Ken Liu, goes beyond just aesthetics. It envisions a technology rooted in East Asian materials (bamboo, silk, paper) and bio-mimetic designs, creating an advanced, alternate technical history for the East.

While the "Silk" (the aesthetic) is clear, the "Punk" (the spirit) is the true challenge. Liu himself noted that "the 'punk' is much more important than the 'silk.'" It's about rebellion, resistance, and renewal against tradition and authority.

🚀 Yan Wanqing's monumental new historical sci-fi novel, The Gilt Peach (金桃), has arrived to definitively answer what that "punk" is.

The Gilt Peach is a groundbreaking work that builds a complete, systemic alternate history of technology in the medieval era. It features incredible concepts like the "Jingwei Network" (a global computational system based on the I Ching), massive mechanical war machines, and mobile cities—all set against the backdrop of the Tang Dynasty Silk Road.

The Core "Punk": The novel's heart lies in asking: Can technological progress truly benefit all of humanity under a feudal system? The "punk" is the sharp critique of the very feudal institutions and conservative ideologies that treat advanced tech (like the AI artifact "The Gilt Peach") purely as a tool for maintaining imperial order and hierarchy—not for universal welfare.

The Gilt Peach is a landmark that establishes Silkpunk as a unique and vital Chinese contribution to world science fiction, offering a profound commentary on technology, ethics, and the human relationship with nature (the Chinese concept of Tian Ren He Yi, or "unity of man and nature").

Highly recommended for fans of epic world-building and thought-provoking philosophical sci-fi!
