On 29 September 2026, the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI), the Association of Arab Universities اتحاد الجامعات العربية (AArU) and the Arab Regional Centre of the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) jointly held an online webinar to introduce the positioning and services of the IIOE Arab Regional Centre to universities across the Arab region and to discuss pathways for institutional cooperation and capacity building.

The webinar was the first public and wide-ranging consultation held since the establishment of the IIOE Arab Regional Centre. It brought together more than 150 university representatives from countries including Egypt, Oman, Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, Sudan, and Lebanon.

[Featured Article] From Mission to Action: Gender Equality in the Digital Transformation of Higher Education — UNESCO-ICHEI's Practice

The International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI) has written gender equality into its institutional mission. Over years of practice, it has transcribed the mission into indicators in programme design, course content and platform, the composition of partner network and the themes of knowledge production. On 10 September 2026, at the UNESCO Headquarters, UNESCO-ICHEI and the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE) jointly launched the "AI-Enabled Empowerment: Women's Leadership in Higher Education in the Global South" Programme — a new starting point, in the age of AI, for the practice of gender equality that UNESCO-ICHEI has been pursuing for years.

On September 21, 2026, the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI) signed cooperation agreements with China POCY Group, Caofeidian College of Technology and Tangshan Maritime Institute at the Beijing Caofeidian International Vocational Education City. The parties will deepen cooperation in areas such as expanding the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) ecosystem, jointly developing the China Craftsman Valley International Industry-Education Integration Base (Shenzhen, China), and advancing the internationalization of vocational education.

UNESCO-ICHEI and the IIOE Indonesia National Centre, Indonesia Cyber Education Institute (ICE Institute) jointly launched the pilot of the "AI + Cross-Border E-Commerce" Micro-Certification Programme in Indonesia.

On 16 September 2026, UNESCO-ICHEI visited Indonesia to attend the launch ceremony of the "AI + Cross-Border E-Commerce" Micro-Certification Pilot Programme.

To advance programme implementation, UNESCO-ICHEI delegation met with the faculty team involved in localising this Micro-Certification curriculum. During the visit, UNESCO-ICHEI held discussions with the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of The Republic of Indonesia. UNESCO-ICHEI also visited cross-border e-commerce platforms, Alibaba.com and Lazada.

Marking the fifth anniversary of the Indonesia Cyber Education Institute (ICE Institute), the Indonesia National Centre of the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE), the Southeast Asia regional seminar "Towards a Regional Framework for Micro-Credential Policies" was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 16 September 2026. The International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI) attended by invitation and delivered a keynote speech, sharing experience in the development and certification of micro-credential courses, both in Chinese industry and at UNESCO-ICHEI itself, and taking an active part in policy discussions on micro-credential development in Southeast Asia.

From 17 to 19 September 2026, the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI) was invited to attend Huawei CONNECT 2026 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Centre and Shanghai Expo Centre. UNESCO-ICHEI contributed to a series of education-focused events, engaging in in-depth discussions with leaders from universities, industry and government. The discussions explored practical applications and implementation pathways for AI-enabled higher education in the context of closer industry-academia collaboration, with a focus on better connecting academic learning with industry practice and generating new ideas for future-ready talent development.
