SCAA'S HAPPY HELPS A NEEDY CAT
We know it seems like Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai is always asking for something. And we often are! But once in a while, there's an opportunity for us to give back.
Foster cat Happy has grown into a big love bug. Big being the operative word ha ha. Happy's weight gain is another cat's lifeline, as Happy is big enough to donate blood for an anemic cat undergoeing major emergency surgery today.
Being a blood donor is safe for healthy pets. The vet does a thorough pre-sedation check up as well as a blood type match.
Happy is type A like the sick cat, he's almost 5.5KG, fully vaccinated, and recovered easily from previous neutering surgery.
Happy was sedated for blood draw at Shanghai PAW Veterinary Clinic, and soon after was awake and enjoying chest rubs. He returns to his foster home today.
SCAA will publish a short feature on Happy's blood donation and encourage pet owners whose cats or dogs meet donor criteria to please consider helping when they see a plea.
SCAA animals have both benefited from donations and donated when we can. Blood is indeed the gift of life.

REESE'S UPCOMING CLINIC COSTS SOS
Thank you to donors who kindly covered 95% of Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai's disabled foster Coco's latest costs.
Now, with just a bit more to go for her, SCAA turns our attention to Reese.
Reese is another 'permanent foster'. He was found a couple of years ago, huddled in the dirt for days. His nails trimmed short and his body covered in cat wounds. Once safely inside, it was clear this guy is used to the comforts of home.
What was not clear until a couple months into foster care, was that Reese has regular seizures. They can be horrible. For all of us.
Donations covered his MRI, which unforuntately confirmed that Reese has a mass in his brain.
Reese has to stay at Shanghai PAW Veterinary Clinic while his foster parents travel. He needs close monitoring and daily anti-convulsant and hypertension medication.
Reese will add another ¥1,890 to SCAA debt. [US$478 / £210 / €245]

SCAA SUCCESS STORY FINALLY WRITTEN FOR JUNO
Juno and his siblings Yuki and Jasper were so small when they were flea and tick-riddled rescues in a closed park in the Fall of 2022 that they looked like little piglets.
So many ups and downs for Juno, while his siblings found forever homes ages ago. But good things do indeed come to those who wait... Juno is finally leaving Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai foster care.
We have too many people to thank for their fostering time and donations for Juno's extensive Shanghai PAW Veterinary Clinic care - from all the vet basics, to dental cleanings, and even an MRI to diagnose his mild IVDD, and many long & costly stints in boarding.
SCAA can't stress enough how every dollar makes a difference, and how your Share could be the one that gets one of our rescues vet care or out of boarding and into a home!

DISABLED COCO'S NEW COSTS: ¥4,410
[US$650 / €568 / £490]
A decade ago, tiny Coco was found by tourists as she lay paralyzed against the curb near bustling Yu Gardens. She found her way to Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai and she has lived her best life since.
Coco is unstoppable. She pulls herself up on the sofa, drags herself from the bed to the cat tree, and is so cooperative with her daily bladder expressing and now daily meds.
What is slowing Coco down is another round of bacteria in her urine and, unfortunately, a quickly progressing heart issue from old age.
Coco has racked up new SCAA debt for a recent cardiac ultrasound, blood tests, urinalysis, and meds (¥2,220) and she will add more to our invoice (¥1,890) for her yearly July stay at Shanghai PAW Veterinary Clinic when her foster parents travel.
We published a plea in the SCAAShanghai Official WeChat with the clinic invoices and the AliPay and WeChat QR codes. See link in Comments below.

ADOPT-A-CAT-MONTH: KOPI
Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai's stunning tabby boy Kopi is still looking for a forever home.
Of course the first weeks after his rescue from a planter box by a busy road were obviously too challgening for adopters, his rescuers had already placed Kopi with people who gave him back because they didn't want to treat Kopi's constipation and megacolon.
Thankfully SCAA's vet partner Shanghai PAW Veterinary Clinic sussed out the cause of Kopi's condition: a painful ulcer in his re**um. Kopi was refusing to p**p as it hurt and he was backing himself up ... big time!
Now, Kopi is all clear. He's long finished any gastro intestinal and gastric motility meds and supplements. With his encouraging growth spurt, Kopi has left his health woes behind him (pun intended!).
Kopi is a seriously cuddly cat. Watching TV? He's there ... and probably on you! In bed - goes without saying you can't shake Kopi at night. Working on your laptop? Kopi has considerably supervisory experience.

ADOPT-A-CAT MONTH: HAPPY
There's no better name for this Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai foster cat than this. Happy came to SCAA from the city of Nanjing, after this wee kitten spotted a foster mom walking through an apartment compound and made a beeline for her. Smart kitties can spot 'a sucker' from a mile away ha ha.
Happy has grown up in Shanghai, and received all the vet care basics and cat flu treatment from SCAA's vet partner Shanghai PAW Veterinary Clinic.
After all this time, fosters cannot figure out why Happy's not been adopted yet. A potential trial with people new to cats didn't work out well, and we figure that's because they ignored our information that Happy starts off each night snuggled up close, sucking on his toes and purring in your ear. It's a kind of super closeness that adopters need to be ok with, and lesson learned it's something we need to check long before Happy moves homes again. You cannot close Happy out of the bedroom every night and still expect him to be a well-settled pet when this causes him noticeable anxiety.

ADOPT-A-CAT MONTH: SIMBA
Did you know that June is Adopt-a-Cat Month? Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai happens to think any month is a purrfect month to add a feline friend to the family. So in the spirit of the season, SCAA is featuring our fabulous foster cats still awaiting adoption.
Simba has been with SCAA nearly 1 year. That's too long for such a cute, curious, playful, and social ginger guy! He was lucky to be rescued by visitors passing through Shanghai to catch a return flight home. He was even luckier that we made an exception to a full foster program to squeeze him in and get him all the care he needs. But it seems Simba's luck has run out. Let's change that!

Cleo is surprised to hear about a blockade. There’s plenty of gas around here 😆
It’s just the usual post-rescue adjustment to a new (and proper!) diet, with some de-wormer side effects for good measure.
With her first vaccination on Friday, fosters are taking no chances. It’s time for probiotics and stool-firming medicinal clay supplement for Cleo.

YOUR ACTIONS, OUR CONSEQUENCES.
Anybody who rescues, rehabilitates, and adopts out needy animals knows all too well just how much time, effort, and money it takes to get these cats and dogs from scared on the street to happy & healthy in a home.
Everybody at Second Chance Animal Aid Shanghai thinks that if we can do it, anybody can. So it continues to frustrate us to meet people in the community who see rescue as an all-or-nothing proposition. Nobody says you must keep a kitten that you find!
This pretty tortie is getting a 2nd second chance. We crossed paths with the first person to 'rescue' her as foster dog Max used all his 22KG to pull us towards the sound of frantic kitten screaming. Someone had picked her up, brought her home to safety, and after being told 'no' to a second cat (like that's the only option?) the kitten was returned outside and placed in a planter outside a restaurant along a busy street.
Rescue is a learning curve and the learning never ends. We wish more people in the community would stop and think about the long list of ways they can work together with their friends, family, colleagues, vet clinic, and social media contacts to make a difference for just 1 rescue. Not many kittens in similar circumstances will be this lucky.
For now, SCAA has added yet another Shanghai PAW Veterinary Clinic visit and FPV test (all clear!) to our outstanding invoice.

PARASITE CONTROL PLEA (X2)
While external and internal parasites are common in cats and dogs, these can cause anything from discomfort to life-threatening illness. From the unbearable itching of skin rashes and the dangers of anemia caused by fleas, mites, and ticks, to dehydration from diarrhea caused by worms, common parasites can make life miserable and possibly deadly for homeless animals.
In today's SCAAShanghai Official WeChat (see link in Comments) we are raising funds for more parasite control for our healthy foster animals.
SCAA is also raising funds to provide a dedicated feeder of homeless dogs with as many rounds of easy-to-apply topical parasite control for the friendly street dogs that she feeds nightly.
Unfortunately, we do not have the financial and foster resources to find even the friendliest of these dogs a home.
But with your help, we can at least improve their quality of life in challenging circumstances.
