The Yuz Museum is founded by Chinese-Indonesian entrepreneur Mr. Tek has built up a considerable collection of contemporary art, especially installation art, during the past decade. The inaugural exhibition of the museum has been presented in May of 2014. Located at the West Bund Cultural Corridor, the space of Shanghai Yuz Museum was once the hangar of Longhua Airport. The museum boasts a total a
rea of 9,000 square meters, among which the hangar-converted main gallery alone covers over 3,000sqm. By retaining the unique sense of grandeur of this enormous structure, the space perfectly sets off the magnificence of the installations in Mr. As the last virgin waterfront along the Huangpu River, West Bund Cultural Corridor embodies the cultural vision of Xuhui District government. With the opening of the West Bund 2013: A Biennial of Architecture and Contemporary Art late last year, the “corridor” has attracted global media attention. From the construction of the Bund as adventurer’s paradise in 1920s and 30s, the rise of Lujiazui as a financial center in 1990s, to the exuberant dynamism of the West Bund nowadays, the development of the waterfront area in Shanghai epitomizes what it takes for a big city to truly grow into an influential metropolis. Tek pointed out, Shanghai has already become a world’s financial, trading and shipping center. But only by building itself as an international cultural hub can it truly be recognized as a metropolis. It is out of such a firm conviction that he decided to choose Shanghai, to choose the West Bund, as the home for his art museum.
