After weeks of collecting books from across Shanghai, Shanghai Mamas es happy to host Book Swap on Saturday, June 6th.

In preparation, a dedicated team of volunteers gathered the night before to sort through an impressive collection of over 3,000 books—a process that takes nearly three hours, and one that we approach with great care and gratitude. This event has been a cherished tradition for Shanghai Mamas for six years, and we are continually moved by the commitment of volunteers who return year after year to assist with both the sorting and the event itself.

This year, we had the pleasure of speaking with some of our long-standing volunteers, who shared what draws them back to the Book Swap each season. Their stories are a beautiful reminder that this initiative is about far more than books—it is about community, continuity, and the joy of sharing.

Meet Xiaomin, Our June Mama of the Month ✨

Xiaomin’s journey spans Guizhou, Belgium, Denmark, and Singapore before she returned to Shanghai in March 2024 to welcome her baby boy. Now in Yangpu after living in Changing, she loves exploring the city with her little one. From peaceful riverside walks along the Yangpu Bund to hidden gems like Fuxing Island.

She never tires of xiǎolóngbāo and seasonal hairy crab. Her advice for new mamas? Connect with communities like Shanghai Mamas. It makes the city feel smaller and more welcoming. She also swears by flexible travel plans and keeping things light and spontaneous when exploring with a child.

Last week, Shanghai Mamas went to the 1862 Theatre to watch Wetmen 2, a show that needs no explanation, just appreciation for the arts 🎭 and… water. Lots of water ☔️

For International Mother’s Day, Shanghai Mamas gathered to celebrate in the most elegant way: by wearing the qipao and stepping into history. Our night began with a guided walking tour through the charming laneways of Longmen Cun, a historic neighborhood with charming houses built in 1935. We then arrived at the beautifully restored Ximan Flora Studio, where we mingled over a gorgeous spread sponsored by Epermarket and Oyster Bay w**es, who also hosted a DIY w**e glass charm activity, reminding us that mums are worth going to the ends of the earth for. The evening came alive with a soulful handpan performance by MUFASA, followed by laughter-filled comedy from Li Ying of Herlarious Club, who had us bonding over the joy of motherhood. Between photo sessions in our stunning qipao, we soaked in the beauty of femininity, heritage, and community, leaving with full hearts and beautiful memories.

Meet Regina, our April Mama of the Month 🌸

A San Francisco native who’s made Shanghai home for 16 years, Regina is a mom of two (plus a new Labrador, Queenie 🐾), a world traveler, and a community connector.

From squeezing into a tiny yatai for ramen to exploring provinces across China, her family tries to visit at least one new country each year.

Her advice to newcomers? “Be curious. Be open. Dive right in because the community will welcome you!” 💫

What began as a small Yahoo group in 2006 has grown into a trusted community for moms in Shanghai, offering support, practical information, and a real sense of belonging at every stage of motherhood. Shanghai Mamas is run by volunteers who keep conversations flowing, organize events, and share resources that help international families feel at home in the city. It is a space built by moms, for moms, where connection comes naturally and support is always within reach.
